Agreed with Ben, SPL isn't everything. :)

Tone is everything. With professional measurement, a given system may be spec'ed for a given purpose.

It's not about stadium-filling sound. That's not the purpose of this confab. As I understand, it's a basic comparison of tonal response and clarity projection between two competing systems. No one's gonna put the L1/B1 up against a system like Val's.

Again, the line array is a whole nother system. Gentlemen, please take this into account. :)

Rob, Keith, Ben, this is sounding more and more appealing.....I might even bring my "beginner" speakers just for fun! :) As long as our schedule permits us to make the trip...

This is Rob and Keith's event, so I cannot speak for them. However, I think we should allow anyone to bring ANY system. Again, what a great opportunity for all involved to experience many choices in the audio industry, and to learn about the fundamentals of sound. Every system has unique design characteristics and thus varying performance. For example, there is no doubt that Randy's Tour-X will beat both the D-Lite 1002 and Bose in total SPL. The D-Lite will have the most audiophile sound of all the systems, and the Bose linear array gives it an extremely wide pattern.

I just fear that there is a potential for it to get heated, and for me that's not worth the trip. This isn't a pit fight, this should be about fellowship and learning.

Ben

Not in person... that is what internet DJ forums are for. :sqerr:

Let's keep in mind that this is more or less a listening endevor... a chance to hear systems we don't normally in the course of our careers get to hear...

Ben's right this isn't a "Car Stereo Bass Contest" (my words not Ben's) and is not about achieving concert level sound... but, is an exercise in the presentation of sound clarity and all that, that entails.

I would welcome the metering as it would give a good basis for some to configure their own EQ curves better maybe then they have been in the past to get the most out of their systems.

Not to mention the chance to meet y'all!

Kirby, the Eliminators are a well known established product. Even I've heard them and I'm a relative newbie. Tour-X is new and not as well known since not that many people have them yet, the same with Dynacord, QSC K series and Bose. Eliminators are a known quantity. Lots of folks run them because in their price range there is not much that can touch them for sound quality, reliability and SPLs. No need to drag them there. Bring yourself and your two ears. Just my opinion.

I'd like to see some FBTs or RCFs if there is room. I for one would be happy if the Dynacord, Bose and QSC K series are represented. That should be enough to keep everyone busy.

This could be a great marketing opportunity for all involved also if done correctly.

I hope Val shows up to show off her gear :sqwink:

Ben:
Each system will receive exactly the same input at exactly the same level with no EQ. Otherwise, you're right... it's no longer fair.
I totally agree. Meters don't lie. Human senses can be fooled.

Seems to me fair would be to allow each system to be demoed in the manner and environment that makes it shine, not throttle it back so that less capable ones can then compete based on specs, not listening experience.

Let's do it totally fair. One round is restricted as you suggest, but then one round of open class. Bring your best. Do your best. Set it up the best. Run it the best.

I suggest this duality because the audiences that receive the sound output are humans with auditory senses not meters. Bring the meters but let's remember,

It's not how big it is, it's how you use it.

LOL

Rob : The 31st is out for me, having a wedding at 12:00pm and then another at 7:00pm on the 30th. The curse of being a working mobile DJ.

A VERY biassed opinion

A very biassed opinion from a wedding DJ......(Cap, I am not picking on your post but rather trying to add to it)

When "I" am considering any system, I have not only have to consider how it sounds but also what it took to make it sound like it did.
A compact light system that seems perfect may not be perfect if it takes 500lbs and $10k worth of processing equipment to get it there. If I can "fool" the senses without the weight or $, thats the direction I would lean.

Also, for me anyway, volume means VERY little. I don't look for a system that can rival a "Who" concert and the guests don't either.
Most "wedding" DJ's tend to loose track of the fact that the guests are not here to be blasted out by ear piercing, chest thumping volume. Wedding guests are there to celebrate but they also want to be able to reunite and converse with other family members w/out screaming across the table.

A good wedding DJ only needs enough system to project vocals and "soft" background music through the room. The only space that "I" need to fill with sound is the 20x20 or 30x30 dance floor.

Now to the actual point.
Different systems specialize in different applications.
You wouldn't put a Bentley in a drag race same as you wouldn't take a top fuel dragster to the grocery store.

Exactly my point and exactly the questions that an end user needs to ask bout, observe, and consider.

The L1 has built in presets and a wired EQ (L1 MI) or a Tone Match Engine for the MII. Does the test criteria mean the L1 user cannot fully utilize their system's potential for the sake of a reading?

31st might not work for us either as we have a reception that evening and without looking at the schedule, I'm not sure what time we're going to be finishing up.

I'll need to pull the paperwork and refresh my memory on the times and see if I might be able to put together enough time to make the trip.

Yup, they have been around...but I know of absolutely no one in my area that are using any kind of EV speakers (mobile DJ-wise). Peavey seems to be big in this area, along with Yamaha and a few using some JBLs and Behringers. The few that are using JBLs and Behringers are using the powered plastic boxes on a stick.

If I'm able to attend and if I bring my gear, it will be for comparison of what I'm running now to against the Tour-X (possibly Dynacord) in a side by side comparison to see if I want to take the plunge in the near future and send Ben some more of my money....It will probably be my only opportunity to do this kind of comparison.

Just my opinion...

Y'know, that makes total sense. Side by side Eliminator vs. Tour X. Man, I wish I could go.

Never seen or heard the tour X. The bar that I went to that was running the Eliminators blew me away. Almost walked out as soon as I walked in because it was so loud. The bass was thumping too. It was very impressive. They were running at least one EV Q66 amp that I could see.

What about the first week of June?

Keith: Can you check about any midweek dates that might work?

We just pulled the paperwork on the reception for the 30th and we're booked until midnight and maybe later. They're expecting close to 300 (we've heard that one before), but I'm figuring maybe 200, so we'll be hauling lots of gear in as this is one big room (6,400 square foot).

We were in this building before and it's freakin' acoustical nightmare.....

Rob : If you're expecting working jocks to attend from any distances outside an hour or so drive from the target, Sundays ain't gonna do it.

How about Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday?
