Cheaplights - Stud vs Hamster

Hey Rick. The Hamster looks just like the color splash jr. I bought some direct from China exactly like the Hamster. They called them par 36's and were $18 dollars each. That included a clear plastic cover over the leds. They call it indoor or outdoor lighting with the cover. Looks like the Hamsters have that also and the color splash jr's don't.

I think they have 86 - 5mm leds. Anyway I know they are 5mm on the hamsters. I believe the studs and stallions have 10 mm leds, but not quite as many. I don't think the hamster light will be as bright as the stud.

I plan to use the 8 par 36's I have lighting short vertical trussing with a spandex sleeves. If I can help answer anything let me know Rick, you have helped me a ton with the photo booth.

Mike, the hamsters aren't worth plugging in at a venue. The studs/stallions do a respectable job but can get lost on high ceilings. They also don't pack out as compact as what I'm using now (Slimpar56). Take my advice, just say no on the hamsters.

Is the Hampster worth buying?

I found your thread in a search. You guys are the pros so I figured a ask.

I have a my own wedding coming up and we are using a church reception hall for our reception. Like many churches it has 9 foot drop ceilings and on or off florescent lights. I was thinking out buying 8 hamsters and just start renting them out to DIYers after my wedding.

My question is: Are they even worth it? I like the hamsters because they are small and easy to transport. If they can't get up a 9 foot wall then I don't want to waste my money or time. Could yall let me know, please?

Don't bother with the hamsters. They aren't worth plugging in. They will not adequately do the job. Period.

Thank you. I guess I will go with Studs. I would have love to go with the hamsters because I live in Houston and the wedding is in Ohio. I going to have to have a suitcase with me just for lights. The Hamsters will travel better. Studs it is!

You might be money ahead to safely pack the lights and ship them via FedEx or UPS to your venue or hotel. They'll probably arrive in better condition than going through a suitcase. Of course, double check with your venue/hotel that it's cool to have something shipped there.

No you won't. They don't sell them anymore.

FWIW, I'd recommend Chauvet Slimpar56s. I can pack 20 of them, with zip cords, in a 24-gallon, rolling trunk from Lowes.

That is a good idea. I could send it to my parents in Ohio.

The Studs are still on the site: http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page15.html and I live in Houston so I was in the showroom yesterday and they had them there.

The Slimpar56s are out of my price range for now. I think it would be a great addition down the road for me.

Houston, are you a DJ? Not saying you can't be here, just curious.

No, I am not. If I need to leave I will. I don't want to disrupt anything. I want to get into uplighting rental. I would target DIY guys like myself and maybe became a low cost rental company for local DJs (assuming I start buying better equipment that they would want). This forum seemed to be full of open people with experience so I thought i would ask a few questions to at least point me in the general direction I want to go.

FYI, I did just called Cheaplights and the do carry the Stud and he said it is twice the brightness. The Stallion and the Stud were too close to carry both. They do have open box Stallions for sale on the site.

Rick, I thought I had cleared this up previously....they still carrry the Stud. I've got another 10 coming around the 15th (ordered them, but had them hold off shipping until I get back from vacation). The new ones have the socket on the back for daisy-chaining too. For the price, they are a perfect light for my situation...along with these I'm adding mini-colorstrips as well.

Btw, comparing the Studs to the Slimpars .... which has the best casing? Those Studs are extremely durable. :)

Well dang me. I called them a couple of months ago and the rep said they quit carrying them. The studs are good little lights and put out a lot of light. Still, I'm glad I just sold off mine and switched over the slimpars.

But you might want to change your name or get used to people telling you to "spread em".

I am not sure I get that reference. I am from Ohio been in Houston 4 years. :bconfused: Thank you for the welcome.

I bought two Studs and I like them so I will get more. I am going to try to attach a pic.

The coolest place I could set up the lights was my bedroom but none the less I am excited. I have two friends that have separate house parties next weekend. So I going to buy more and light their place up for practice and to get pictures (not using my camera phone)

No need to leave at all...like I said, I was just curious. Besides, there are probably times when the insight from a non-DJ would be great.

By the way...the whole spread 'em reference. We've got another member on here, ahoustondj, that we all kid around with about needing to have the speakers spread so many feet apart from each other.
