Thoughts on the business card

As for putting your address where your gear is. I understand. One of my biggest fears. I would say to that, get a PO Box. The only thing with that is some people might not be comfortable with sending their money to a PO Box. Maybe we can explain to them it is for safety reasons. I have thought of doing this myself. My clients know that I work out of my home for the most part. Home security system and cameras don't hurt either. :)

As for physical address not being on the website. How many people don't use Amazon.com because they don't know their physical address? The other option is to rent a post office box. Many small to medium sized companies choose that route.

Yes, but enough of them do to sustain the business. My address has never been on my card/website and I am going into my 22nd year. People usually get my address after contacting me. As long as you make clear what areas you serve, who really needs an address?

Just my thoughts.

Amazon is much bigger that a dj in somewhere, Mississippi and upon first impressions (no dispect) there would obviously be some initiual sense of trust..

Wes, noone's faulting you for not posting an address; I don't. To me, from a client perspective, this might be more of an issue that a gmail account.

I do not think an address is necessary on the business card, after all they are hiring a mobile DJ. The only place my address is located is on the contract the client sees (after all they have to know where to send the retainer, right). I also do not think it would hurt to put the type of business on it.

It's all about perception Steve, as you've stated....A prospect viewing you website initially might think you're the yahoo....... Since 2006, I've never had anyone bring up the issue that I use an isp email address; once they make initial contact, they know I'm for real...I just don't think it's the issue you make it to be. Heck, it could be argued operating out of your home, or being a part time dj is less professional....we won't go there though
.

Yes...you prefer YOUR perceived approach of using your own domain email address....Realistically; I think you'd be the only one....other than Wes

Steve, I've only ever received compliments about my website, so I'm not worried about not posting my adress there but thanks for your concern with my perception. I only use my domain email address for corresponding with clients since it is just that, business. I do use my isp email for all things personal though.

As for the office issue, I only know of one DJ service in the entire province of BC with a rented office space. Theirs is located 'off the beaten path' in an industrial area. They employ over 15 deejays to provide a fast-food type service. Not something I want to emulate anyhow. My home based office on the other hand, has plenty of parking, a separate entrance, nice little fridge stocked with drinks and provides a great tax advantage for this full-time DJ. It is also very easy to find, centrally located just two blocks off the main road that runs through my city. This location was specifically chosen with logistics in mind. Being home based allows me to meet client whenever it suits them, from 9 AM to 9 PM; they love it! Try doing that with a brick and mortar office and your divorce will cost you more than the rent. Lol! :bzshocked:

I believe it's a big deal and you don't, that's cool. It's alright if you don't agree, I'm not trying to convince you; to each their own. The West Coast and East Coast rarely agree on anything anyhow...

It's not A big Deal either.............................Different Strokes for different Folks !!

My mailing address is a PO Box as we live above the post office and have no mail delivery :-/. Paypal has both my mailing and physical addresses when I generate an invoice I use both. I have no evidence to back it up but think it puts people at ease a bit. I know I'd think twice before mailing off payment to a PO box or 'suite' (mailboxes etc).

Then again I don't have thousands of dollars worth of gear stored here either.

As always YMMV. :)

I agree that some people will see it that way, but consider this...

Why does there need to be something special about his services? In a market where everyone is claiming to be the best and most unique, that's sort of refreshing and honest. There's a client for all of us. There's a huge market of folks that just want a basic, no-frills, professional DJ/MC service.

Sometimes, instead of striving to "be the best", it's more practical to just "be".
.

I go through a lot of DJ websites and don't see many claiming to be the best. The focus is more on services and how they can create a memorable fun and elegant event. I do see your point but from a business standpoint I wouldn't want to go with a name that by it's very nature would turn off would be brides. Buuuuuuuut then again maybe Al is not interested in those Brides...if so then his name is probably a good filter for eliminating those types. Nothing is ever simple...except in this case Al, lol

My 2 cents... I like your original design and simplicity. I thought all info should be kept in one spot rather than searching around for the site, number or email. I'm sure people know what you do, especially since you are handing them out for a reason. You could put DJ in front of your name. If you like, you can also put "simply one song at a time" under simply Al on the front. Hope this helps... :)

have no idea what you do from that card.

that was my first thought.
although if you PLANNED it that way, to be unique...I understand where you're going with it.

I kinda kept my biz cards a little vague, too.
I did it because I wear many hats, and offer many services...
and did not want a long list of crap on my cards.
If someone is talking to you about being a DJ...and you give them a card.
they don't need to see "DJ" on it.

I wouldn't want to go with a name that by it's very nature would turn off would be brides.

I bet Al gets the kind of brides HE wants to get with his name/slogan.
for every hoidy-toidy bride he turns off, I bet he gets interest from a down-to-earth one

I have used Gold Plated Productions for years.
the name itself implies "looks nice" and "cheap".
That suits me a to a "T".
my slogan is "shiny on the outside, cheap on the inside"...
to further promote that fact.
the last thing I want to do is appear to be stuffy or overpriced.
because I am not, and I don't want brides (or gigs) who are expecting that.

Al, allow me to give you two examples of my business cards. I created both of these on my computer with Microsoft Word. They both are on very heavy duty card stock that you can purchase at any office supply store. Neither has anything on the back of the card, as I feel everything a client needs to know is on the front. Simple is the idea, as in your business name. Hope this helps.

Best -

Greg
