Why do some put down others for not being a computer DJ?

When we switched from cassette to CD many of our DJs started with using to CD walkman hooked to a mixer, back up CD players were additional CD walkman. Sweet small systems and waaaay easier than cassette. I will say that using VHS to run viseo shows were pure hell!

I wont deny having used Cassette but if at all possible I would use my tables and then slowwly converted to CD Its been 3 yrs now all digital and I am glad to leave my CDs at home.

Tell ya what...I sure don't miss lugging milk crates full of records. Funny thing is though, I'm always tweaking my music database! I'm sure not looking back!

Best,

Paul

I actually put this picture up on Facebook a couple weeks ago with a post after i saw comments bashing Dj's who use Controllers and saying they weren't REAL Dj's. This is a picture of some of my DJ Gear. Some DJ's use Turntables, Some use Controllers, Some use cd's, etc.......Regardless of what you use you can be a great DJ. I can Fill a dance floor just as well using my Denon controller as i can using a pair of my Technics turntables. DJ's should use the tool that fits them best and that is all there is to it. A lot of that Bashing you hear from other DJ's comes from those who have never tried the other side of things. For example, CD or Vinyl DJ's that never went Digital. Or a Turntablist that hasn't ever tried a controller. Then some just have a personal preference either way. The point is it doesn't matter what tools you use as long as you do what works best for your style and customers.

Great post!

Yea I remember the cassette days. Definitely more of a pain than any other media so far.

Yup...me too. I remember using a finger to cue a track with cassette singles...ahhh the memories...like going to a music store to buy new music on cassette singles...wow, how time and technology have changed!

I never used Cassettes for Live Events. My cassettes were bought and made for me to listen to music at home or in the car. Back in the day a lot of the cassette users were also some of those who taped music from Vinyl they did not buy! In other words pirated music ended up on Cassettes.

Although you have me on ignore; in theory duplicating your vinyl could have been construed as piracy as well.....and how many mixtape/cassettes did you make for your friends?

If Sony had their way today ....If you bought a song off Itunes and wanted to put a copy on your wife's Ipod as well as youir son's; that means two additionnal purchases.

oh no here the old timer's stories...

"Electricity... hah... back in my day sunny we had to spin the turntables by hand"

Hah, but don't laugh too hard Ron... :)

At the bar on The Farm (actually it was called a Saloon), they had a player piano, that would only take buffalo nickels and rolls -- bet that was a bit difficult to mix on... xf:D

Dude, I'm talking about events way back in 1989!

At that time, many of us did.
Cassettes was around way before that my friend. I am just saying I never used them for Gigs, period.

Heck, you guys must be youngsters -- I used 8-tracks when I first started...

Turntable and RS 8-track player. That was actually fun, but you had to practice a lot... :sqrofl:
I still have one at home and it works. That also never went to Gigs. I was using Vinyl since the sixties. When I went "Pro" in the late 70s I already owned a very impressive library of Vinyl.

Just curious as I went from the vinyl in the 70s and didnt switch over total CD until the lat 90s. I put aside the CDs two yrs ago. I did as mentioned use the odd casette but never ran a Cassette only system. I hated them and when using one it had to have the auto cue mechanism to find splits inbetween the songs.

Here's another prespective.

I ran the light show for a high school senior formal dance last October and the DJ (who I didn't know) was using a real nice CD based system - no laptop at all.

I overheard a few students come up in amazement that he was still using CDs and not a laptop.

I guess many kids today grew up having music only on an I Pod and never had to play a CD.

Kinda sad no?

There are a lot of used reels on Ebay the tape might be brittle now though. After a quick search I haven't seen anyone selling new
