I just skimmed through some posts and I must have missed the attempt to get under your skin by this member. I think he just has an off-beat sense of humor like myself.

God, I sound like Steve (thatmusicguy). Somebody hit me with a blunt object!

Here ya go Hank:

Always glad to help :sqwink:

Personally, I took it as Steve and Rox enjoying giving each other an ulcer. :)

Me too!

I haven't had this much fun, since I watched the guy driving and talking on his cell phone last week, and hitting the telephone pole... :sqlaugh:

what is your budget?

Never, never, never never never I repeat, never never ask someone for their budget. When you do, you immediately create a wall between you and your prospective client. Instead get information that will give you an idea as to what they are spending. Questions like, which venue are you using? If the answer is a posh Hotel then you kind of get a feel for what they may spend. if it is the Church Hall or a tent in the backyard, then it may be that their money is tight. Let info give you answers to your questions.
If you do have to ask directly then use "What dollar amount are you considering setting aside for your music entertainment?"

You're truly not "getting" Mr. Beecher. Not to worry, many times I don't either. This time, I believe I do.

His response was as "out of place" as some of the questions originally being asked in this thread. I'm quite certain he wasn't trying to land this event, therefore, you're right. Once you dismiss the idea that he was trying to book this client, perhaps you'll be on the road to understanding what he was getting at.

Yeah, I don't care for that question, especially when they try to get at the entire budget for my wedding, not just the DJ. I tell the ones who ask that I'm looking for a DJ for under $1000. Of course, they hit me up with the whole regional differences thing. Fortunately, I think I've found a DJ who charges within my price range and sounds like he'll make the cut. I'm meeting with him in 2 weeks. :)

One thing I will never get is an ulcer, I have way too much fun in life for that! Not saying that I haven't ever given someone an ulcer though!

"Ah don' wanna talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food-trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! "

...go away, or I shall taunt you a second time-a!

.

1) Duplication is not as evil or unappealing as it's sometimes made out to be. I'm more interested in "working" than "working at one upping my competition".

2) We're all very different snowflakes, but together, we're just snow.

1) Of course there is duplication. No biggie. It's not about "one-upping", it's about salesmanship. The thing is, every good salesman knows that one must sell oneself first...

2) ....and don't call me snowflake, poopsie...:sqlaugh::sqerr:

my favorite movie!!!

Apparently my little wink smiley wasn't sarcastic enough for you.

I swear I don't even remember if it was you or not, but if it was done with a winky-dink and I missed it, I'm a putz, and apologize. :sqembarrassed:

...and your dog's father wore paw cozies....

Wait.... "Smelt of elderberries"? Wow, that's a keeper!

Whats you budget?

Sorry bad question. Let me try again - As a dj how come you don't know how to shop for one?

I tell ya what, if I needed a dj for an event, I would hire a person who was f-ing amazing and write the amount off as a private lesson.

In order to do that, you'd have to accept the idea that there are others who might know more than you do, and/or approach things differently, and/or have talents few others have, or.. God forbid.. are BETTER, or deserve the higher rates they might charge. I'm not convinced that our young couple are able to see that. I hope I'm wrong.

I may start another thread, based on an idea from this one.

I say that the way to make yourself appear different
(or BETTER, as it were)
is to NOT put any of the typical crap on your site
or in your material
after seeing the same phrases time after time
a potential client will find it refreshing to NOT see it.
it's the old addage about a girl in a negligie (sp?)
being sexier than one that is completely naked
you have to give them just enough info to make them WANT to know more.
get them to call you
and let the schmooze begin!
