I beat my chest every once in a while....and now after seeing this thread, I realized...its pointless to beat my chest on this site......

I am just going to kick butt at my next event, and the many more to come!

1) The question shouldn't make ANY pro DJ nervous. I answer it all of the time. Not just me, read Steve Cie's post. Beautiful job of answering the questiion. Either you can sell what you are, outside of the equipment, or you can't.

Anyone can buy equipment and music. It's up to US to set ourselves apart. If you can't, you're just one of the crowd....and it's a BIG, competitive crowd.


2) This is the sort of attitude that turns me off in ANY line of business. Back in the 70's when Studio 54 started the trend of the velvet rope, most people eventually wrote off these venues. Why? Because the CUSTOMER comes first. Anything else is just a bad business plan. No client OWES you anything, including a shot. You must earn it.

To those that say I LAUGH at this or that question, or if you don't like my answers, tough: Are you so great that the perspective client has to DESERVE you? Is that how you promote your business? I can tell you straight out that if I run into this sort of reverse snobbery from ANYONE in ANY business, they're done. Why? Because they are not interested in giving me the best service or product, they are only interested in filling their pockets and boosting their ego. I have no need for them, and I doubt that I'm alone.
 
Say there are one million wedding DJs out there. Are we saying that there are (or should be) one million very different ways of doing a reception? That would be unrealistic.

"The crowd" that so many of us are "one of" exists so that the BIG market will always have entertainment available. There can't be only one shiny red sports car on the lot. Somebody else may want to drive one as well.

Duplication is not as evil or unappealing as it's sometimes made out to be. I'm more interested in "working" than "working at one upping my competition".

We're all very different snowflakes, but together, we're just snow.

I'm not going to go back and re-read all the posts here, but I am one who did mention laughing 'all the way to the bank'. That comment was not directed at my CLIENTS, it was directed to other DJs who criticized my magic tricks as somehow lame (or whatever). I never treat my clients as though they are somehow privileged to have me work their event. It's very much the other way around.

Wes, I for one am going to congratulate you on having that additional talent and being able to use it to enhance the experience of your clients and their guests.

I too do a magic trick from time to time where I pull a bird out of mid-air, this one was copied from a Carolina Karaoke Host who did it for us at a Jolt gathering it has been a lot of fun but can only be used once in a "blue" Moon!
 
I prefer up-close, slight of hand magic where you can let the person even (sometimes) touch the item you are using. It's much more impressive when you can let them get their face right down in front of the trick. I bite quarters in half and make them 'repair' themselves just by blowing on it, I pull lights out of thin air, I make metal disks change colors just by rubbing them together, I make coloring book images color themselves and/or disappear altogether. I have a finger guillotine trick I do, I make nickles move from one hand to the other without them touching, etc, etc. These are all done up close and they impress young and old alike.

No Wes, it wasn't you. Someone mentioned laughing at a client who asked certtain questions- at this point I can't remember who, or even care. I just can't imagine doing business like that.....

So to repeat, it wasn't YOU! :sqcool:

I have had many people try to get under my skin before online and all of them were a lot smarter than, and better at it than you and just about everyone of them failed at it! It is funny to watch someone as stupid as you are to try though!

I just skimmed through some posts and I must have missed the attempt to get under your skin by this member. I think he just has an off-beat sense of humor like myself.
