What is a Clean Look/Setup?

I am pretty sure that Paul's sound is awesome. I just think for the size of those boxes a bigger spread will serve him better. Yep, I know he himself says it sucks and I wish the venues/clients would be less controlling and allow the DJs (Those who have the desire) to space out their gear for better sound.

I don't care for that facade with the lights. It looks like shower doors & the lights behind it look like a bad carnival ride.
But that's just me?

I like the setup without the facade. It looks clean & neat. The facade tends to look to big & obtrusive. (like you are hiding)
Nice setup!

If anything, they should close the drapes, that view behind the DJ is awful!
 
And paint the steps....And there's a spot on the knife at table number 2 place setting 8.....;)

But on a more serious note you guys that hide subs of put them behind/in front of the mains must run delays do you? My client the Devil would like to know

If they knew what that was they won't be putting them in those places. Its right up there with the comb filtering issue. :)

I got to disagree with you there Canute knows more about sound than most that come to this board me included and I baited him a bit on that one because the pic he posted showed his Bose a couple of feet back from his subs. I would be suprised to find out he wasn't using a delay.

In all honestly in a medium to large room a couple of feet between the subs and the tops would be barley noticable unless you were an audiophile of mabye a pro sound tech and even for the tech it would be more hearing with your eyes than reality

If you were confined to that area I would think that the room was small so why the need for that size speaker setup? If it was a large hall why were you confined to just that area? Again, these are just questions, I am not hassling you.

I think if you look at the reflective surfaces, you can see the rest of the room in the photo provided. ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I must state though that there are several others on this board who are more technically qualified than I am and they too offer many helpful hints and advice. There are phrases such as "It works for me!", "I like it this way!" etc. This is not the kind of advice I like to give. When it comes to technical correctness, that is the method by which I try and operate.
How many on here take the time to read up on the technical data of their equipment especially the speakers. There are recommendations on there that if followed will allow for proper operation and provide optimum sound. Instead, most DJs go by what others are doing and following the beat of someone else's drum.
Yes, I do have an intense passion for my craft and I won't let anyone get in my way to compromise my sound. It isn't my fault that some don't have the backbone to demand from the venues and clients what they need so that they can achieve optimum sound.
By and large, the quality of gear owned by the members on this Forum is pretty good. Thanks to our wonderful Sponsor NLFX and the feedback (Negative or positive) that comes from this board, members have been able to make qualified decisions when making their purchases.
Again what this comes down to is that some on here are just looking for a pat on the back, when they do not get it they go ballistic and hostile. I could care less if people hide their subs under a table or wear their speakers like ear muffs, 3' from each ear. What I do care about is that the venues and clients who don't know any better, buy into that type of thinking and expect people like myself to follow the crowd. That is where the problem lies.
Anyway, if anyone is not interested in reading my posts, there is such a feature called the "Ignore Button". You won't hurt my feelings, I am not a baby.

First you said my Bose L1's need to be farther apart. No, Bose recommends 10'-20".
In the picture mine are about 11' apart. Guests will be within 2' - 15' of the speakers
while dancing so the speaker distance makes sense.
Then you complain of a "goal post" look which is just silly and dumb.
Then you conclude that since you can't see the sub it must be behind the facade.
When you are corrected and it's explained that the sub is near the back wall where it will do the most good, you insinuate that there will be a delay between my main speakers and the sub which is another fallacy. Anything else I missed?

While I'm enjoying this food fight, might I throw a thought out...?

The human brain is quite a bit faster than sound waves. It adapts to it's environment. While a delay might be perceptible to an instrument trying to record it, the brain will overcome it, and adjust to it. The sound stage could become less or more, but the brain will compensate for that.

It's really only a theoretical argument, and I don't believe it has any realistic effects in a DJ show, other than whether you have more thump or not depending on placement... ;)



Just my thoughts -- continue throwing food :)
 
Here are a few setups from various shows I've done, we put in a lot of time and energy to ensure our setups are clean, fun and hopefully unique. Sometimes, less is more. Ultimately, we design all of our setups around the space we are given and what would be appropriate for the type of function we're asked to be part of. There seems to be a lot of discussion regarding speaker placement. I think this is personal preference. Again, working within the confines of the space you are provided is ideal. However, I generally like to place my speakers within 5 feet of my table and placed a step or two behind where I stand.

Why? I generally don't have the desire to setup a monitor speaker. My setups take long enough as it is, so having speakers nearby allows me to hear my mixes. If I've missed a beat, I can hear it as the audience hears it and adjust the pitch accordingly. That's my preference, your mileage may vary.

Rick you are correct. The sub might sound better near a doorway. It might sound better against a wall. It may sound better near the speakers. It all depends on the room - But with such a minimal distance you would not hear a delay.
