What is a Clean Look/Setup?

When you are corrected and it's explained that the sub is near the back wall where it will do the most good, you insinuate that there will be a delay between my main speakers and the sub which is another fallacy. Anything else I missed?

Actually it was me that brought up the delay and I was razzing Houston about having his Bose 802s behind his subs I didn't even notice if you had a sub.

Science is science it's no insunuation it's fact that if you have a space of 3 feet or more there will be a delay regardless of the brand of speaker you use the speeed of sound doesn't change. How much that delay is noticable to the human ear is another story generally you wouldn't be able to hear it until 6ft or more

Over the years there have been plenty come to the boards complaining about slapback and then when the show a system picture they have thier sub stuck over in a corner several feet away from thier mains because it's the best place for sound in thier minds

Houston's only relevant comment to this thread was his goal post comment. So that makes it his best and dumbest comment at the same time.

Actually Jeff, my mains sit partly over my subs so they are not 3 feet behind. I know that the photo makes it look different. Then too remember that my Bass Bins are scoops, backwards, under and out is how the low notes travel. The Transducer itself also projects bass notes.
You are correct on the science though!

Okay here's mine.

I created this so it would be clean & EVERYTHING is rack mounted, no components piled up or things to unpack/pack up or wires running everywhere. The only wires you'll see is what comes out between me & the case. I use active (powered) speakers.

Please note, this is not a very good photo.
I have a total of 3 mics (1 on gooseneck, 2 wireless) plugged in & ready to go. . Everything is rackmounted & clean. All my wires are zip tied & inside..out of site. As you can see, I need no facade to hide anything.

Top section:
1 EV RE2 wireless mics
PioneerDJM 5000 mixer
Denon 2500

Lower section:
Furman power conditioner
Denon 4500 trays (if I need to use CDs)
ACL controls for my lighting
Zippy luminated keyboard (when needed)

Inside the case:
1 Shure wireless mic receiver mounted by velcro for easy removal
1 AC powered USB hub for plugging in additional ext. hard drives.
The 2 bolts sticking out of the side of the case is for my Citronic laptop stand (I wasn't using my laptop at this gig)
The thing on the side tucked into the handle of the case is a Littlelite for illuminating the controls on the top of the rack.

My understanding is a clean setup is one that doesn't consist of a table top full of components piled on top of each other with visible cords & wires strewn all over. Equipment that is visably neat & professionally displayed.

Is this clean enough?

The teddy bears were there since they were used for the "shoe" game, but I use these instead. But before and after, they make cute decorations.

I could not spread the speakers out any further due to the room layout.

Can we see the rest of the room? Based on what you said I will then assume the room is no larger than my living room. BTW, In my living room, the speakers are about 20feet apart. Maybe some like wearing speakers like earmuffs, I don't!

Can we see the rest of the room?

Look at the left side...there is a doorway on the right side as well with tables right on the other side of both doorways.

So unless I run 50 feet of cable up the top of the doorways and down to the far corners of the room where they'd be over tables and way away from the dance floor (right in front of me), that's my only option.

This is one of our house venues and they have certain rules on running wires.

We tried wireless, but found the speakers were too far away from the dance floor and had to be louder and tables next to the speakers complained.

Plus with only six feet of width at that space, we have to use a three foot table so the tripods aren't in the way of guests coming in. And that's one of the reasons we're their house account guys - because we can make do with a three foot table

We tried wireless, but found the speakers were too far away from the dance floor and had to be louder and tables next to the speakers complained.

To expand a bit further, this is my interpretation. Looking at a DJs setup from a Guest's point of view, what do you see? Is it obtrusive, neat clean lines, wires hidden or neatly taped down? Is the setup imposing, meaning that is the DJ area the first thing one sees when they come in to the room or does it blend in with the decor.

Some applications are more critical than others. A Wedding for example would be expected to be more critical for looks more so than a dance at a High School Gig or outdoor event. If at a Wedding or Corporate Holiday Party, the first thing you see is a concentration of gear and DJ setup, to me that is not too good for a private elegant setup.

Speakers by their very nature are conspicuous, even the Bose L1s. Therefore the best way to get them to blend in is to separate them as much as possible, especially away from the DJ booth where it becomes more concentrated and noticeable. The argument that one wants a small footprint is why they have everything together is BS. Spread out or concentrated it takes up the same amount of floor space. There is nothing wrong with Speakers or tripods being visible. You don't see a pianist trying to hide the Piano do you? Is the DJ and his/her music any less important than the Harpist offering Dinnertime music?

Presentation is the Key. The size of the room also will dictate the size/power of the equipment needed. Therefore the gear size can be an acceptable ratio to the room size.
Finally posting a gig report with just a picture of the DJ booth or people dancing does not do mush to educate anyone else about the creativity of how that DJ did his/her setup in relation to the Decor and size of the room. We need to see scale and placement to get a true picture. Anyone can go to the manufacturer's or retailers sites and see pictures of gear. We want to see setup.

These in my opinion are some great examples by other members from their posts.

I have seen many other good ones including one of the setups by Mark Beecher on this thread but this is just my opinion nobody else's.
BTW I work with Interior Designers on a weekly basis, I used to also assist a friend in the Party Rental Business so I have been to tons of venues and saw how they setup their rooms. So I feel a bit comfortable in making recommendations to others about room setups.

No disrespect Jim but its difficult to give constructive criticism without seeing the whole picture/layout/diagram with dimensions. Next time you go over there take a picture from each end of the room showing each wall facing and the side walls so we can get a better understanding.

I didn't post the picture for critique on speaker spread. This thread is about clean setups - of which I think that is.

If you want to see the room, go here: https://www.marylandgcc.org/Home.aspx
A setup consists of the DJ Gear/Booth/Table area plus where the speakers are located. Showing just a Rack or equipment in a rack or on a table is called The System not the setup.
BTW How am I to know from just a link which photo is the room in which you played?

Wow...OK...whatever...just forget I ever posted on this thread. You see the setup...you see the room and you have the gall to call me a liar??

Unbelievable...I'm outta here!

Dunlop - don't let it get to you. Just like in our profession - sometimes you gotta let it roll off your back. I'm sure you did the best you could with what you had.

Okay Canute...
took these pictures just for you!
Here is my setup from Saturday. I think it's pretty clean.

I know what yer thinkin'...it's a 6-foot table...
so I need to spread those speakers farther apart.
Well, here is the reason why I did not spread them farther
View attachment 23446
exit doors on one side, a separate room facing another direction on the other.
I turned the speaker toward the side room for announcements and dinner
turned it toward the dance floor for dancing.
do the bride and groom look like they noticed (or cared about) the lack of spread on the speakers?

Where did I call you a liar? You gave me a link to a freaking Country Club! How am I supposed to see the layout of the room from there?

I am going to refuse to give any more opinions on photos that show only one area. There are many on here that give proper Gig reports. They take enough pics that gives one a perspective of the room. Two speakers and a table with Equipment on it all in a six foot space is not my idea of a clean setup. It is congested. Show me the rest of the room and I'll eat crow! I hear the same story from the same people time and time again, "It is the venue!" "Its all I had to work with". I can see that happening every now and then but not every friggin time. Prove me wrong for once!

Here is an example from what I can see as "The only Place to setup that makes sense", even though things are still a bit congested. You can see the rest of the room from the mirrored wall. This is one of your posts Ausumn I have nothing to criticize about this Setup. You are right on the Dance Floor and people are on the outskirts. http://ourdjtalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=23023&d=1304985056
