What is a Clean Look/Setup?

Sorry, but according to some here, your picture is worthless without a view of the room...

There is no need to see the view of the room in adj4u2c's case. He isn't squished up in a corner making the excuse that "It was the only place to be".

When I hear those excuses then I would like to see the rest of the room to determine for myself. It is because I feel they are embarrassed to admit they did not have an active or proactive role in the room arrangement to have optimum DJ placement. Therefore they show just one area.

Is that your version of the rest of the room? Its just a pic taken farther back. How about one from the DJ booth facing outwards to the opposite wall. I have posted pics of my setups. They are right there in my albums. I primarily do the same venues because I am a repeat performer/vendor

the thread is about clean setups.
what good would a pic from MY point of vew be?

View attachment 23454

look at the right side of this pic
you'll see the corner of the head table.
there is a wall right behind their chairs
THAT is the view from the booth

if you do most of your gigs at the same place(s)
then you never really have an issue with unusual or difficult setups,
as they would always be the same.
being a great performer (which I am not doubting in your case) has nothing to with playing at the same venues. in the end, the client choose me, not the venue.

Just cannot figure out why everyone who get stuck in a place they'd rather not be
is automatically making excuses in your opinion?
Why are you the one who decides?
Do you honestly think ANY of us would not even TRY to make the situation the best it could be?
if not for the client's sake...for our own personal, selfish reasons?

Mike,
Yes the thread is about Clean setups. Clean in our application means tidiness, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The discussion morphed into speaker/placement location because that also helps in judging the overall setup. A clump of speakers and gear all in one little area is not my idea of a clean setup.
My question to you is this, "Did you pay a site visit beforehand and have an active role in how the room was to be setup so you would not end up in a corner?"

My setups that I have been doing lately (3 different clubs) has nothing to do with all the years of setups that I have done and still do. This was one of the last ones of which I took pictures. You can see the room from different angles. http://www.flickr.com/photos/24813806@N06/sets/72157626162844446/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/24813806@N06/sets/72157625605117206/
I recently showed pics of a Gig I did at a Country Club. That was discussed (The aluminium color speaker stands).

PUHLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

didn't have to
played there dozens of times.
there is a "nook" with 3 permanent walls where they put the DJ
and the dance floor is permanent.
there is no adjusting how the room is "set up"

period!

Thats your words exactly "where they put the DJ". Need I say more. I rest my case!

Hmm it seems it has needed a rest several times over.
Hey Jon
It is not as repetitive as you may think. There has been over 1,500 views to this thread. Its a learning experience to many who are viewing it for the first time. Think of how many DJs may now think twice about how their setup looks and where they locate their gear. If those regulars on here are tired of reading the same thing then they should not click on the thread, plain and simple!

Well I guess I will put a couple of shots from last weekend up. I brought a small rig containing 2 15" RCF tops and 2 Yorkville LS 700's to the 3 events I did.

I don't have TV -- so I just keep coming back to see what kind of whacky stuff you can come up with next... :D

I probably account for about 400 of those views... ;)

Houston - I think you may have jumped to a conclusion here (based on his phrasing). Maybe I'm wrong but for the sake of it, I will once again play the ODJT Devil's Advocate. I think most guys that have been involved in our discussions are not the ones that we should be making examples of. Most of us 'live' ones are experienced and have been doing this for a long time and seen the whole "spread y'er speaker" motto long enough. Some places are just that. You setup here, period. Unless you want to fight with the owners of said facility, then all you're doing is barking up the wrong tree. Most of us 'live' ones hopefully are visiting (or seeing drawn plans of) the room they will have to accommodate and requesting what we need. Going back to my previous statement however, if a facility is dead set on 'you will be here', then you have very little wiggle room. Give some of these guys a break. If you're doing this as a full time gig, playing consistently, then even you know that you don't always get what you want.

Granted, some of those that have been 'doing as they're told' for years may be stuck in that mode. I'm willing to bet that some of them are not in that mode though. Don't assume that they are.

What is a Clean Look/Setup?

One where the cookware, BBQ supplies and bathroom accessories stay in the appropriate room???? yorofl:

Forgot to mention that both subs a tucked under the table side by side. Sound was awesome.

If you are referring to the table behind your facade, that is ludicrous. I would NEVER put my sub(s) under a table behind a facade. Why not just put it in the bathroom down the hall! What was the reasoning for this, I'd like to hear! Sorry guy, you need a lesson in acoustics and I pity your hearing in about ten years!

Canute the facade is a soft thin material the sound carries forward not back. I'm not blasting them, they just round out the tone. I never do gigs without some kind of sub. For bigger parties I use an LS 800 and I place that off to the left or right side of my gear. I don't like the look of it blocking the front of the set up.

No rash conclusion man. A while back I did a Poll asking who does site surveys and the majority of the answers at that time was that the majority of those who go to gigs do not do any site surveys and just deal with things when they get there. Maybe you were not aware of that.

Yes there IS a way to get what you want. First talk to your Client as to why you need to go and do a Site Survey. Then you go to the venue representing your Client not yourself. The Venue is more apt to listen if you approach things that way. How come bands don't get treated that way? I bet if a Band went to play where Mike did his gig (A few posts above) that they would not be put in that small corner.

I might put them under a table but not behind a facade.

I was not aware of the poll so I stand corrected. I might question why you're being offensive with Mike tho. Was he one that answered incorrectly? Maybe this was a facility that said 'thou shalt'.

I agree that there is a way to get what you want. What I said was that if a location is dead set and adamant that 'this is where you WILL be' than that's it - unless you're willing to wage war on the venue. I agree about the survey. No idea how they would treat a band.

Everything looks nice....except for that damned facade.

Maybe it's just me? but it gives the appearance that the DJ is hiding (or changing his clothes) behind it.
I think a table with a nice drape/skirt would look sharp. It's more open & appealing.

You have nice professional DJ equipment but hidden in a cubicle.
The facade gives the appearance of "Keep away" or "don't look behind this"....or the DJ is not wearing any pants (LOL!)

Maybe it's a regional thing? I don't see other DJs in my area using these things.
