What is a Clean Look/Setup?

Rick, when I see someone post a pic of just their setup area with no other photos to give others a true perspective of the room, I see someone who is only looking for a pat on the back. They are afraid to show "Other" areas that most likely is better suited for the setup area.Is that a threat, or a promise...?
They did not have the balls to ask for what they want so they come back with the canned response of phrases such as "That was the only place to setup" There was no other place" etc. I think they know fully well that it is them not the venue to be blamed for being stuck in a corner. They purposefully don't want to show pics of the whole room and they know why.
So maybe from now on I just stand by and let people like that glow when they get their proverbial "Pat on the back" Anybody can put two speakers on each end of a table that has been laid out for them. 100% of those pictures may look neat with no wires showing, but stand back and take a look and it becomes so conspicuous. Why do you think they are putting dresses and skirts on their tripods? They themselves know it don't look good.
Personally, I prefer to see the DJs main equipment set-up (rack?)
Setting up speakers can vary & without actually being in that room & knowing all the particulars, it's hard to judge why speakers were setup the way they were. I have performed at several venues where the manager or bride insisted the speakers be set up in a totally stupid location that made no sense to me.
I want to see how professional looking their main gear looks. Is it neatly rack mounted & all the unecessary wires & cords tucked away & secured? Or is it a big mess of crap all half-ass connected & piled up all over a table top with loose wires & cords in full view...or HIDDEN behind a facade? ("Please excuse our Mess")

True also. Houston, we've had this discussion before, the manager / bride are not sound people but sometimes (like last minute switchups) you have to let it be - regardless of how we view it, dunlop says he is getting repeat work at this venue because of what he IS doing - obviously it is working for him. Is it what you would do? Maybe not - but you're also not a repeat performer there. I think we can all understand where you're coming from - it's not always feasable. Is it possible more than we see, absolutely.

Say what you may, I firmly believe that most DJs are having others dictate their jobs for them. The sound and the presentation/look is compromised. Again its the same folks who no matter where they play, always seem to end up in a corner wearing their speakers like ear muffs. I refuse to believe that it is always the fault of the venue or client. They are scared to speakup and ask for what they want. You are correct in that the Venue does not know better, if so should we not enlighten them? I am sure they also want to best presentation and sound for their guests. I guarantee that the main question that comes out of the DJs mouth when arrive at a venue is "Where do you want me to setup?"
If you walk in & start throwing demands & changing the setup to suit yourself, you will most likely be deemed as "difficult to work with".
In my market area there are hundreds of mobile DJ services will to do backflips to get on venue referral lists. BM's love having their butts kissed.

I dont see too many reports or pics from you!
and we don't always blame things on the manager at a venue
sometimes it about the actual CONSTRUCTION of the room(s)
as in THIS case, where they added a room onto a rooom
and never changed the position of the dance floor.
I am not being a pr*ck here Canute
but you CAN get rather insistent without knowing all the details
(if you cannot judge properly without proper pictures...then why judge?)

Nice clean setup.
One thing I did notice (not picking on you) ....Wouldn't the subwoofers be more effective on the main flloor as opposed to being on a riser?
Unless I'm wrong, I've always heard that subs should be placed on the solid floor so people feel the thump in their feet/legs, the sub is more effective on a solid floor.
Is this correct?
Hahahaahahaahaha! I just knew that response was coming! I wondered why it took so long. My friend, I don't "Just walk in and start making demands". Even I know that is a stupid thing to do. I do what is necessary to avoid that kind of confrontation.
On the Clients behalf, I visit the venue to determine the Sound setup, for both optimum sound as well as aesthetic appeal. Everyone is on the same page with this position. The venue then gets a diagram of the DJ setup area and speakers location. They have to adhere to that understanding. The client also gets a copy. Therefore I don't have to walk in and change anything!
I don't have to kiss anyone's butt to get business. I have the confidence and negotiating sales skills to get what I want.
One kisses butts = one gets no respect = one gets shoved in a corner out of the way.
I am a man with integrity and will demand respect because my allegiance is to my client, not some Banquet Manager or Venue.

I will agree with you on the subs placement. I did not want to say it first and am glad that even you noticed that. It will be better for bass as well as looks! Thanks for noticing. Otherwise he is just fine given that he is using a stage for better elevation of those towers.
Is that your version of the rest of the room? Its just a pic taken farther back. How about one from the DJ booth facing outwards to the opposite wall. I have posted pics of my setups. They are right there in my albums. I primarily do the same venues because I am a repeat performer/vendor
