That's why I switched to lappys. Power draw was too much on the gaming/dev machine (and it was huge too). So I bought a couple lappys, and they use very little power -- I just leave them on all the time. They both have external monitors, but I have them set to shut the monitors off if I'm not using them.

The big machine was a bit faster, but I don't miss the headaches that came with it ;)

Now, if only I could remember to turn off the bathroom lights (I replaced those when I moved in, with 7 watt CFLs)...
 
screen off / puter on is not abusing power. I know on the old drives, the 'boot' process used more power than leaving it running.

I wonder what a 900 MB/s throughput lappy with 16GB ram runs?

Get a KillaWatt meter, and watch what happens. It's fun to see what you can change/do... :)


My computers are faster than I am, so speed is not an issue any more. All they need to do, is do their job.

The old drives sucked so much power at boot. Spin up, seek, thrash, etc.

No problems here -- they do their job just fine, and use minimal power.

My Acer I'm typing on (with a separate illuminated keyboard, mouse and 22" monitor), is using a total of 48 watts right now (that includes the monitor)) :)

Where I was going, was that these things are almost free to run, so why turn them off...? When the monitor shuts down, we're in the low <= 20 watt range, even with the drive spinning at full tilt. If I let the drive spin down, I'm less than 10 watts. The reason I mentioned the Kill A Watt meter, was because they're under $20. My computers are attached to UPS's that monitor constantly, so I can just look at the panel. But if you don't have one of those handy-dandy (and expensive) doohickeys, you can use the meter to see what yer using.

So if yer gonna buy gear, take the meter to the store, and check it before you buy the gear. :)

I can easily put either of my lappys to sleep or hibernate for hours at a time, then just open the lid, and it's exactly where I left them. So the SSD is a waste of money for me.

I was / am in total agreeance with you - I guess that's why I'm puzzled. I was agreeing that you shouldn't have to turn them off. Drives at spin up (boot) suck SO much power.

Since when does an name have to say exactly what something is?

Would it be better to create a name that very few people would understand or call it a solid state drive so people would quickly understand that it does the same thing a "drive" does, only better....in their opinion?

Why is your software referred to as dj software when discs are not being used?

If its very clear what they are talking about, why does it matter what they call it?

BTW, in answer to your question about why I use the term DJ Software -- let's face it, most folks don't know how to type in "audio mixing software" into Google, and I need to pay the bills... ;)

Just to clear this at least, according to Wikipedia:

A disc jockey, also known as DJ, is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience. Originally, "disc" (sometimes spelled "disk", although this is now uncommon) referred to phonograph records, not the later Compact Discs. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback, no matter the medium.

So DJ software is still appropriate for vinyl, CD, or mp3.

Whisper I think from the OP the user will be very happy using SSD for music/video playback. From the DJ perspective SSD is really the way to go particularly from the standpoint of having to move a lappy around a lot if you are not using external drives.

On another note I just saw a Samsung 256 GB drive on newegg for $329 and with a promo code it was $299. WOW that's just incredible.
