lightening my gear load

Karl,
That happens with age ;) it is also essential you find a way to raise the table with your gear so you don't have to bend over so much. That also causes more problems on the long run.

What concerns me most, is whether Karl is gonna have to put his tree stand in shorter trees from here on out... :sqerr: :sqlaugh:

After a lot or research, talking to Cap and watching a lot of videos, I think I am going to go with 2 compacts. I want to get down to the Bose store and listen to them if possible before I order them but that is not a must. That is about 1 1/2 hour drive for me and after surgery, not sure if I want to do a long drive until my body is up for it.

Unless something happens between now and the end of Feb. Those are what I am going with.

raising the table is a great idea to SVO. And Rick, the deer stand isn't the problem, it is dragging the deer out of the woods. As long as I am comfortable in the stand.

Thanks for the advise everyone.

I believe it is a must!

A roughly $2k outlay, that can make or break your career. I've heard the compacts, and they do nothing for me. On the other hand, I like the L1's (just think they're overpriced).

I don't think I could make such a bold move, without an audition...

YMMV

P.S. Hopefully, after having back surgery, you will go to the supermarket and get lots of veggies, and stop trying to drag dead deer out of the woods... :)

Don't get me wrong, I want to go listen to them. I have heard the L1's and have always wanted them. I trust Cap enough that if I don't get to, I won't worry too much.

And I will hunt until I can no longer physically do it. I have 2 sons that will do the dragging from now on. Heck, the one out hunted me this year anyways.

I just called the Bose store and they have one set up and said I can bring in my MP3 player and listen to it. Too bad it is 80+ miles away. Maybe a Sunday drive tomorrow.

EDIT: I forgot. I am heading down the way of the Bose store Feb 7th so I will wait and stop in on my way. Won't be purchasing anything until after that anyways. Save the time and gas.

One thing to keep in mind with any speaker is in a store setting they are at thier optimal in the field it might be a completly different deal

I've never seen or heard an L1 compact, but I just got an L1 Classic a week ago and I can tell you they can go pretty loud. I was quite surprised. I took a chance and plugged one of my Electro Voice Sb122 passive subs into it instead of the B1 bass bin and the L1 amplifier never seemed to break a sweat. I don't think you would have a problem with up to about 250 people give or take a few.

The B1 bass bins are super light by the way and they sound decent. My EV Sb122 sub weighs in at about 35 pounds and it really rounds out the the sound and thumps pretty good considering it's size and weigth. It's not going to kick like an 18" sub, but for most weddings it should be just fine IMO, but it all depends on what sound you're going for.

As was mentioned a pair of EV Sb2a subs with a pair of passive EV Zx1s is a light weight and good sounding system-it's about the same price as one L1 with one bass bin-around $2,200, check with Ben at NLFX for the best deal. That system will handle about 250 people as well. The Zx1s are only 18 pounds to put up on poles over the subs.

I got the Bose L1 to lighten the load too. I'm not interested in heavy and bulky audio gear. It's pretty easy to lift, carry and set up although the powerbase is surprisingly heavy-not something I would want to be lifting if I had back surgery.

These two systems are about the lightest and best sounding light gear you're going to find. Maybe a pair of Bose compacts would be even better-lighter, faster setup etc. I guess I need to go see and ear them now . . .

Karl, sorry to hear about your need for surgery. Get it done, get healthy first! :)

Sounds like you've got some good ideas on where to go with this situation now and after you do your research you'll make the right choice for you.

If it was me, I'd make sure I had helpers 100% of the time to save yourself future injuries or issues. One our local guys was involved in a car wreck many years ago and can't lift or move his gear, so he has 2 guys that move and setup his gear (and he has a big honkin' setup) for him at every gig. He just charges enough extra to cover the cost of the "manual labor" involved and he keeps plenty busy.

Take care of yourself.....That's an order!

8 ohms, but not 100% sure.

Lots of impedance specs are reported in 4ohms which then makes it sound a lot. Comparing the same wattage with different impedances make a lot of difference. 8 ohms is more popular but I am starting to see a lot of specs published in 4 and even 2 ohms.
An amp 1,000 watts per channel into 2 ohms mode may be attractive to some but it really isn't a lot if you are driving 8 ohms or 16ohms speakers.

The question is Steve, how much does one of those Promaxx-10s go for? $1,000, $1,200? From everything I've read I have no doubts that FBT speakers are the cat's meow, but they seem pretty pricey. Under 25 pounds is really nice, but at what price?

They are around $900 each. Are they worth it? YES. With 131dB SPL nothing is even close. I would love to own them. Maybe next year... The ART 710-A goes up to 129 dB and will cost you $100 more.

So two PromaxX-10s $1,800, one EV Live-X ELX118P sub around $700= about $2,500 certainly in the ballpark of reasonability, about the price of one Bose L1 and 2 bass bins. If they're as good as Anzyxx says, this system could probably handle 300 people.

After speaking to Cap again and to my good friend from school and first DJ boss John Young, I have decided to go with 1 L1 Model 1 and 2 B 1's . I have also been reading the Bose boards and believe that is superior to my 2 Eon 15's. And the ease of set up and weight is a huge improvement.

I will get a second set as finances allow. But reading and researching, 1 L1 plus 2 B1s will be more than adequate for my uses. I will have the Eons as back up and if extra volume is needed for a specific event.

I am still researching other things I might need to purchase such as mixer. I am in the process of ripping all my music to hard drive also. Going to retool everything it looks like.

Thanks again for all the advise everyone. I really do appreciate it.

I think you have made an excellent choice. Depending on the money you spend for a mixer. The DJM 5000 by Pioneer is also an excellent choice. After buying quite a bit of stuff I'm finally at that point were I just kick down a few extra bucks and buy what I feel is the best for my personal needs.

Once you go digital using MP3 or WAV (remember CD is also digital) you will cry when you see the ease of use and wonder why you never made the switch years ago. When we started almost 6 years ago we started digital and now thankfully with some huge DJ's now being computer DJ's. It has become very acceptable to our clients.

And yes if you can ever get the money for a second set you will love the total sound and look. My problem is that no matter the size of and event I always use both sets I'm hooked on the sound and the look. Not to mention last year we bought an extra B-1. So now if we do ceremonies. I will have everything setup for my main system and we will use and L-1 for that and simply move the L-1 to its already waiting pre setup area.

And then put away our extra B-1 an ceremony system. We where bringing extra speakers before. Our ceremonies are almost always outside at the same venue. Not to mention with the Bose systems you have a backup already present as you do now with your powered EON's.

Now if your looking for a mixer that is USB and has an IPOD docking area as well and is small but will drive the Bose with alot of head room. I use this for our ceremonies and its great. Its just not a overly DJ looking mixer but many DJ's will use a small mixer likes this. I bought this with backup in mind. I have all our clients music for there ceremony on an IPOD and if something where to happen to my computer system.

Then bam there is your backup. You can also load it with the Top 200 or some good dinner music. Either way its another way of having a backup to cover you clients needs. Also you can use the IPOD to record speeches with mics that are being run thru them as well as the ceremony. )

USB would go to the computer yes. And your Bose L-1 will except 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch speaker cables. Just make sure you get the right kind that would work best. Again it would be a Cap thing. He is awesome and can tell you what ever you need. Look at the 2nd photo. Main mix out would work as well as control room. This is a mixer that you would have to play with to see what gives you the best options and it has effects. Of course with Bose the very best option for a (Single L-1) is the Bose T-1.

I have often thought about getting it but can't seem to put out the money when I already have 2 other options that already work great. I have designed our ceremony systems so that if I just have a simple ceremony. Then I use this setup. If I have a more difficult ceremony. Meaning multiple speakers or singer then I have another setup where I can do up to a total of 5 wireless mic's. In Cali these brides love the outside weddings with all the trappings. I'm all about making it happen for them.

I have seen the T-1 talked about on the Bose boards but have not looked into it yet. I was actually reading that the mixer I have, I can use the unbalanced outs into the L1. Just Left to 1 channel and Right to 2 channel and that would work. I would then preset to 00 and run everything off my mixer.

I am just researching so I might be totally off. But that is why I will buy from Cap so he can help me with all this.
