lightening my gear load

I LOVE my compacts. I have 3 of them and they always seem to impress. I have done a good number of parties with one or two. I love the weight and the 5 minute set up and tear down. For the right occasion, I love these things

I have done parties of 40-50 with one. I have done weddings with 2 for 140, but it was a low key during the day wedding. I've done ceremonies of 150-200 with one. With little to no ambient noise, that's not a problem.

However, I don't think I would feel adequate using just one or two compacts for most parties. When I need to crank it, it's just not there.

Have you checked out the model 2?
 
Jes get wireless headphones for all the guests, no regular speakers and amps required.:yoBiggrin::yoBiggrin::yoBiggrin:
 
BTW, I cannot say how it compares to the eons. No first hand knowledge of those. I would be glad to make something up if someone would like:)

I have used other JBL's in the past and liked them.

Why?

It involves carrying and setting up a lot of gear -- basically lots of physical activity, that you need to be in decent shape to do, unless you can afford a roadie.

There comes a time in life, where just doing something to prove you can do it, passes the point of diminishing returns. I don't carry 50 pound speakers every weekend anymore -- not because I don't want to, but because it's not in my best interests -- I don't want back surgery. I also rarely climb ladders, because I don't want a hip replacement... ;)


Common sense should dictate, that if yer body is saying something to you -- you should listen.
 
Gotta lighten the load on my speakers too! Those scoops weigh 150 lbs each. I think I'll take off the casters, that will be about 5 lbs less. :trirolleyes:
 
Karl - look at 2 EV SB2A subs and get 2 unpowered 10 inch tops.....the tops will weigh next to nothing and the SB2A's will power them.... The SB2A's are 46 lbs, but they're subs so you're not lifting them. i run the SB2A's as does anzyzz (he posts here) as does Kevin Nichols.

Thanks guys. I am looking at all directions. I won't give up Djing. That is not an option. right now. I can find ways to save my back. I am just searching for different options right now.
 
Hey Karl go to a bose store and ask for a demo, you will like what you hear out of the L1 compact!!! Your back will love you for swapping out those JBL's!

I own one L1 compact and have done a couple of gigs with about 125 people and the one system was enough. It was a simple wedding reception, if you do a lot of sweet 16s or teen events where you need to just be loud then I would stick to regular speakers & subs, but if you do a lot of weddings with small crowds then 2 L1's would certainly be perfect for you.

I suffer from grade 2 spondylolisthesis of the L4 & L5 and it hasn't stopped me from dj'ing mobile yet. Doing things like ditching my older 3way speakers and picking up smaller peaveys and the L1 compact have helped a lot. Also try bringing a stool to sit when you can to give your back a rest.

Are you using a rock-n-roller style cart to assist you with your load in/out? 2 years ago I purchased my first cart to help my back and I can't tell you how much it helped (DUH!) If coughing up 2k for 2 L1 compacts is hard to swallow maybe a simple cart for $100 might help you carry the larger items from point a to point b, until you can purchase a new lightwieght system.

I can't comment on this particular model but the impulses I have used in the past were nothing but junk.

If you are going Bose go with the L1/B1 combo stay away from the compacts

Here's another option add this sub and you have an equal or better system for alot less cost
 
I just got four k10's and I'm very pleased with their sound. Very nice from highs to lows and an incredibly handy box with one line and two mic inputs right on the back. I've had a Fender PD-250 for years that I will now be sending down the road because these are such great little utility cabinets. I actually bought them to replace SRM-450's as stage monitors and one of the biggest reasons was that I wanted something easier on my old back.

Karl for the price of 2 compacts. I think you would be better off with 1 Bose L-1 and 2 Bose B-1 it would be much lighter and sound better than the EON'S.

Are you saying 1 L1 would work better than 2 compacts? And better than my 2 15 Eons?

Again, I don't do school dances (or at least I only do a couple middle School dances) so I don't need the thump. Your mileage may vary on that but I don't need the thump of a bass.

If 1 L1 with 2 bins is better than the Eons or 2 compacts, that might be the way to go.

Talk with Cap but yes that is my feeling. What you don't see when looking at the compacts online is that each speaker only has about 5 - 6 drivers (small speakers) the rest is just for raising the compact higher and giving it more of the L-1 look. That would be a total of about 10 - 12 drivers with 2 compacts though the bass is included in the compacts. The L-1 has I believe 24 - 25 drivers in each one.

If you ask many of the Bose users on this board or the Bose board many of them use just one for many of there events. Understand that with the Bose it is not so much less stuff as it is components that are put together thus making it lighter. What some like about the compacts is that you can have a stereo effect with 2 as you can with the Bose L-1 quad package.

With a proper mixer you would get plenty of head room with the Bose system, Having heard the JBL though though are a decent speaker. My personal feeling is that the L-1 would sound better than the 2 JBL speakers. I'm not trying to sell Bose, but simply answer your question. There are many fine speakers systems out there.

I just got done loading the van for tonight's show. Absolutely no pain from the lifting. My problem is a degenerative disc. Not an injury. My next show is March 5th and my lovely assistant (see wife) is going to go with on that one.

I rarely work in large venues. So I believe the compact(s) are the way I am going to go. If I do go into a larger venue, I will use my Eons and bring help for set up.

For the tops I will be getting new 8''-RCF's - 408A. They weight only 20 lbs, with 400w (real number) and 126db. Will keep ZX1 for backup.

The EV subs are my best investment. Love them.

What is the Impedance 2, 4 or 8ohms?
