This is an engagement party. Nothing more than a glorified gathering when you get right down to it.

Tell that to the thousands of DJs that get paid money every year from doing one. If its not that important then why break his back to set up equipment and preprogram music?

I dont think anyone here is blasting Chris. Perhaps a few of you are a little bit over sensitive. I think hes a good guy, but it doesnt mean I have to congratulate him on what hes doing, nor do I have to agree.

It's perspective, that's all. I understand your point, I just don't think the actions of this one DJ will affect the thousands of others getting paid.

Some engagement parties are held at the local bistro or in someone's backyard.

Never said it would.

My point wasnt to get him to pay for another DJ. My point was to have him spend time on the person that mattered most, not his love of music. Seems silly really, if the music isnt that important then throw some music on an ipod and stick a powered speaker in the corner.
 
Trust me, I understand everyone's points about how a "Live DJ" may be better than prerecording it. Last night's party really got me thinking about that.

It was a sweet 16 with the playlist here.

Anyway, dinner comes (buffet) and I play some well known oldies, mostly to appease the older folks cause I knew when dancing came I'd be catering to the teens. Wouldn't you know that the TEENS all got on the floor singing and dancing to the oldies! That was unexpected so I decided to throw on some more sing along type oldies that I hadn't planned on playing.

I saw the crowd response and adjusted my music selections to reflect their needs.

I can see everyone's concern about the preprogrammed list and how music selection depends on the mood of the party at that specific moment in time. I've always understood that point but I just wanted to show you guys that I DO understand this concept.

It's not going to change my mind though. Sure, the party MAY turn out to be truely awesome with a "Live DJ" but I feel confident that I will still have a pretty damn good party doing things my way.

What would happen if we hire someone that isn't good? What if they suck? Wouldn't you agree that it would have been better for ME to do this event?
 
True! If you hire someone to do the party they may suck. You can always check them out live or get a demo during an interview before your event. This is just to answer the question.
But by all means you should stick to your original plan of doing it yourself. You already know the crowd and what they like.

Whether you agree with the decision Chris made or not, you know he has put in a lot of time, thought and effort (and is probably still doing so) into this party. I am 100% sure that if he didn't believe he could successfully pull it off, he wouldn't have even attempted to do so.

Of course everyone here does, hes a great guy. Theres nothing wrong with questioning why hes djing his own party. Good Luck

Can't dispute that! And personally, I have learned from all the differing viewpoints both pro and con.
 
I can't believe how close we're getting. It's just over 2 weeks away! Time flies. The RSVP date was set for 5/1 and there's still a lot of folks on the borderline, mainly family from Florida. We don't need a final count till 5/16 though.

Centerpieces are done
Music is 90% done
Table names are 60% done
Finalizing menu Friday

Still need to finish above items and make table arrangements. Also gather some pics to display in VDJ for slideshow.

Not sure if I mentioned this yet but our very own DJ Koz will be helping me that night. Luckily I get to setup the day before so I'll be doing that and programming my lights. That day is my fiancee's brother in law's 50th birthday so during dessert I'm going to have the scanners point to his table as we sing happy birthday. Koz will be handing out the props, controlling the volume and managing my DMX lights via software.

I still can't believe how fast it came.
