Umm, thats what they make caterers for. I bet hes not making the food. Is he serving everyone?

When I've had parties, I've had pro chefs come to the house to cook for us. If I"m having a back yard party for the kids, I flip some burgers. It all depends on what your trying to achieve. If your trying to get people to dance, you dont preprogram music and they just dance. What happens if one song doesnt work. Does he go back up to the booth to change the song. Now it becomes what he didnt want or perhaps nobody can do it better than him.

BASIC is NOT a caterer. HE is a DJ.

That's great that YOU hire pro chefs. Not everybody does.

"What happens if you burn all the burgers at the kids' party?" Oh, then you'll have to go to the store and by more patties, or more fresh ground beef, depending on your expertise. It might become what you didn't want, but life happens.

Vinyl, I've burnt a burger or two in my life. Come on all the burgers, your over analyzing.

I dont care what anyone does, its obvious he has what he is going to do set in his mind, just like the bride that is going to use the iPod. It doesnt make it the right thing to do.

The only point that I'm arguing is the statement he made about just pushing one button. Thats like me saying all I have to do is flip a couple of burgers.

You and I both know theres more to it then pushing one button. What he does at his party I could really care less about. Just like the bride with the iPod, hes going to report back that it was awesome, but deep down inside he'll know he should have had a buddy handle it.

Nah, not at all I dont think anything of it really. I just like to argue a point. Why agree with everyone, you'd never learn anything from it.

I am not saying you can't DJ this event yourself, it's just what you are saying is actually quite humorous...

There is no way you will know ahead of time the exact minute that your cocktail hour(s) is finished and your dinner music begins. You will need to head over to the computer and switch it over.

There is no possible way the computer will know when to pause for an announcement and for how long. Say you had planned on making a welcome announcement at 6 PM but you are in the middle of a nice conversation with Aunt Hilda and totally forget about the time. Well I guess the dead-air will tell you something's up...:sqerr:

Music is my life. I've been DJ'ing for over 15 years and played musical instruments for over 30 years. I listen to all types of music. Could I pre-program an evening of music for dancing? Sure. Would it keep the dance floor packed? Probably not. The reason is, no matter how well I can plan the music, there is no way I will be able to predict how a crowd will react once the playlist is actually in motion. At that point, the playlist actually becomes 'alive', taking on a life of it's own.

DJ'ing it yourself is fine but do not expect it to be as successful 'dancing wise' as if you had a 'live' DJ there. It just won't happen. Also, don't expect not to touch the laptop that evening because you know you will.

Your absolutely right, he'll be walking over to the gear the whole night, theres no way to avoid. He can fool himself but we all know what the truth really is.

Again, I dont really care one way or the other what he does, theres really nothing to this DJ stuff. Why even have a DJ at your wedding when you can just preprogram everything, heck you could do all the bridal party announcements from home and program them into the system.

Hey Mista Spinna! You should throw the turn tables and some reggae in the Vinyl mobile and drive to NY and save Basic from himself.

I see no problem at all if you want to preprogram your own event!

i can't see how this could effect anyone? or why it became so heated!

personally, i think events are better with professional DJ. But if a professional DJ like chris wants to cut some costs at his engagement party because he's good at what he does, i say go for it.

BTW, I agree with Scott and Barry. If you want to DJ your own engagement party, what DJ would know your friends better than you so go for it.

I don't even see it as a cost cutting thing. You know the quality you are capabale of and you want the best for your friends. Nuff said.

I'm computer based, but I still prefer using CDs. Another words I use both, and I could program an entire event but why?

It DID NOT suit him for any reason other than the fact that MEMBERS complained about it being closed.

He did a good thing.

I see nothing wrong with you doing your own party. I have dj'd my own parties and by spinning vinyl and still had a great time!! Go for it!! It's your function, your family and your friends, who knows em better than you. I also did my own wedding reception one time. I pre-recorded everything, had it at the club I worked at and all I had to do was change the tape at the end of the 90 minutes they ran. It was by no means a mistake, we all had the best time!!

Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm not angry with him for doing his own engagement party or Sue doing her own wedding. Everyone has their own set of priorities and principals. I wish everyone well with doing their own functions.
