I'm DJ'ing My Engagement Party

I dont know, the whole thread said they think your wrong but you think your right. It has nothing to do with computer guys versus CD guys. I have a computer that is preprogramed full of music. I could easly put everything on my iPod to do it without a computer.

If your looking to get people to dance, what your saying is preprogrammed music is just as good as a DJ. Heck, now your telling all your guests at your engagement party, that DJing is easy all you do is preprogram the music ahead of time.

Educating people starts one family at a time, most DJs try desperately to educate people that we are more than button pushers. Your family is really going to respect your profession now. He just shows up, sets up the equipment and presses play.

I cant wait until one of your cousins is getting married and they ask you if you can preprogram some music for them to save money. You should be the spokesman for the iPod DJ.

If your just looking to have some background music the whole entire time thats one thing, but just going to push one button for your system is BS and you know it. The volume is going to vary from song to song, they'll be times you might not even want music. There may be a time when you need to make announcements. You'll have to switch from cocktail to dinner, to dance and whatever in between.

You, I and everyone here knows theres more to it than pushing one button.

Like I said, everything is run via computer. I make the playlist in the weeks/days before the gig. All I do is show up, setup and push play and we're set for the night.

Do you really think this will work? If you were hiring a DJ and he told you this would you think hes full of crap, or worth the money he charges?

Think seriously about this one.....go have fun with your family and fiance....If you want to set up the gear fine, but follow everyone elses suggestion and pay a DJ buddy acouple of hundred to work the party....If you want to DJ a set at the end of the party, thats cool....but your place is next to your future wife....and trust me, even though she might seem in agreement with you now....if something goes wrong with the music part of it, and your mind is preoccupied and not focused on her that night....its going to be a loooooooooooong engagment.

Fred

PS...im sure the majority of the DJs in Long Island will have the music that her family likes....

Don't you have any DJ friends that could help you out? I know if I were to have an engagement party tomorrow (my wife would not approve of a second wife though...), I have a few really good DJ buddies that would gladly take care of it for me at no charge. Mr. Jay Tea Vegas is a fine example of one of my good friends that I know would jump at the chance to help me out and has in fact done so in the past. There are too many reasons for getting someone to help out but I can't go into detail at the moment since I'm typing with one hand and holding my 8 month old daughter with the other...

I don't think anybody will change his mind..... so, let's hope all goes well for him.

Steve, I agree, there will never be a time when I say I wish I had enjoyed my family less, or had less time to enjoy them! Chris has a chance to enjoy his family and has made up his mind....

Good luck buddy..... ( sorry to hound you Chris, but this idea just dopesn't sound like a good one to me )

yes I helped Steve out

he has helped me much in the past few yrs and if there is anything I can do in return I do. In the two cases I recently recall. One was to start cocktail and Dinner Music while Steve was enroute. He bribed me with what was the best ever Chicken Lasagna (MmmmmMMMmmmmMMMMMMmmmmm)
Second was his 40th Birthday he said it was open Bar (wouldnt miss that offer).
But seriously its a valid trade and the right one. Allow someone to stand in in case things need to be stopped or restarted.

Damn dude! You sound like a do it yourself Bride.. why not just bring an ipod and save yourself the trouble?:sqmad: It's a celebration, your saving a few bucks from the break the hall gave you, just get a DJ to rock the house.
Will you do this on your wedding day also?

GROOMZILLA!

I will be doing my own engagement party in May. We booked a nice hall on a Friday night, 7:30. I'm going to setup everything, audio, light show and video screen during the day and then go home and shower to return later. Now for the fun part.

Since I run computer based I'm going to make a nice timed playlist before the party. It will be exactly the length of the party. For dinner/cocktail music I'm just going to run VDJ in automix mode with a predefined playlist. Now for the really fun part.

A few weeks before the party I'm going to hook my computer up to my DVD recorder so I can record beatmixed videos. I'm going to make a few sets but each set will actually only be one track on the DVD. For instance, I'll beatmix I Like It Like That into Turn The Beat Around and then into another video. There will be a few videos in each track. I can then place these beatmixed tracks into my playlist.

What's going to happen is that I will have dinner music going with a fade of about 2 seconds between songs. Then the dancing will start and track 1 of my beatmixed videos will start. VDJ will fade the end of dinner music into the beginning of beatmixed dance music and then from there I'm gold because that track is already beatmixed. Do you understand that?

I don't plan on being at the booth at all. Everything should be done already. I also plan to videotape my fiancee and I making basic annoucmentsa during the night. These include things like annoucning cocktail is over and the reception begins. We will also make one for our first dance. We'll tape ourselves saying that this is our first dance and we hope everyone can join us on the floor. It's basically like those prerecorded messages some DJ's use during the first dance. Only difference is that it will be us on screen.

It's going to be something really cool.

Pretty ironic that when a bride tells us she's doing this with her iPod that everyone's quick to flame her.

Chris! Just print out a list of songs you want played and have a someone do this party for you. You seem to be a kool and reasonable kind of guy. What harm will it do? At the end of the evening you will be breaking down all of your gear. You can put that time to good use with your lady, friends and family.
Like I said before. The only lifting I am doing on my wedding day, is lifting my bride from the banquet room to the bedroom. I will leave the music up to the DJ.
Anyway bro.. Have a great time and enjoy your party.

This is NOT the wedding. This is the engagement party. I have no fears of getting drunk and worrying about packing up afterwards. I have a heart condition and can't drink anyway.

Sorry to say but there's no changing my mind on this. I feel VERY confident in my abilities and look forward to a great party. I am spenind a few bucks to have it videotaped. If anyone wants a copy then we'll work something out.

Don't play the MACARENA just because YOU like it.

I am also currently making a webpage about my fiancee and I. One page on the site will be about the engagement party. My guests can visit that page and login to my Gigbuilder online event planner to make music choices so I know I'm playing songs they like.

Again, this is in NO way similar to a bride doing the ipod route. A bride knows nothing about timing. You can give a bride the same exact list of songs that I would play but she would program it in a different order. As a DJ I know how to place songs in the correct order to get people up.

I'm Glad I'm Not Invited

Oh, great, your friends all probably like David Hasselhoff, too.

:sqlaugh:

:p and this is for my prior post, in which I did not put my obligatory smiley (when did you decide to unblock me, anyway? :tongue3:)

You are blocked still. Notice I didn't mention anything about the macarena in my thread.:sqlaugh:

So you've read the crowd ahead of time? Gotcha

Sounds to me like you do cookie-cutter events with that attitude...

When you know everyone in attendence then you kind of know what everyone likes. The guest request system also allows me to schedule their requests as well.

Hardly makes for cookie cutter events. Not even sure where you're getting that from.

This is not a wedding but your having it videotaped. So its important enough to have video taped but not important enough to have a DJ play music at the event for you. Regardless if its a DJ friend or a hired hand.

Let me ask you this, does the computer know when to switch between cocktail music and dinner? Does it know when to switch between dinner and dance music? Does it know when to turn itself down low or off when you need to make an announcement?

I really want your computer, because it seems to know more than the one that I have.

Your right that this is not a wedding, I myself admittedly wouldnt spend big bucks on entertainment. However, I'd pay one of my guys a few bucks to come for 3 or 4 hours.
