:sqeek: I didn't offer to git all fancy now! :sqerr: Here in these parts, you take a swig outta the bottle and pass it on to the next fella! You must be a city slicker! Sheesh!

I think I know why he asked but I may be wrong. Karaoke DJs usually bring/have their own sound equipment. I did Karaoke in my last two clubs (Not this one currently being discussed) and used their whole house system though. Awesome! Small bars/clubs...yes I carry my own.

Yes, Karaoke Hosts do, because standard DJ equipment- even the best- isn't meant for karaoke. But it doesn't matter. My wednesday night club has a top sound system for DJ and dance, and I don't use it for karaoke.

But remember, I also DJ, and I won't plug into club systems with one exception. my Wednesday night place hired me for DJ/karaoke mix for a special night. I ran karaoke from my system, DJ from theirs. I can DJ from the karaoke setup just fine, but for DJ/Dance their system truly rocks- great lights too.

When I cover for my buddy in clubs I DO NOT plug in, though he does in 2 of them. I get some nice compliments in those two places.

Answer above in Red.
I have plugged into the main house system before http://www.ourdjtalk.com/album.php?albumid=36&pictureid=380 for Karaoke using a mike mixer board so maybe that is different than just plugging into a regular DJ mixer. I don't understand how a full house system (Quality one) wouldn't sound better than a regular Karaoke system. May I ask what components you are using for your Karaoke System?

EK, Its apparent that there may a lack of comprehension on your part. If a person is a cheapskate and does not put a priority on the tools for his business, meaning a decent sound system for his club, how in the world do you expect him to call in qualified help for a fee? His system is now working as best as it could, thanks to me. His big azz speakers have blown mid and hi end speakers in them. I guarantee that he is not going to get it repaired until the noise (sound) ceases to emit from the low end. Have you taken a look at the pictures of the equipment and the shoddy and unsafe wiring? Maybe not! See for yourself http://www.ourdjtalk.com/album.php?albumid=37 How could one squeeze over 4 hours (What it actually took) of repair time into half an hour (Time available that Saturday night)? By his actions, he DOES NOT want to have the best sounding system because it is not his priority. If you went over to that club right now and gave him a beat up Radio Shack receiver (Not amp) and two battered speakers, he will try to hook it up. That is the mentality of the individual. Wanna see what a good system looks like? Click here(This was from a previous club where I worked where the mentality was the opposite. (Not shown 4 JBL mains and 4 JBL 18" subwoofers were the speakers on the dance floor.)

I guess it depends on how you look at it. I see opportunity, thanks.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink! Ever heard that phrase?

Have you heard the phrase "you've already failed if you don't try"
or my personal fav... "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning to dance in the rain"

EK, would you care to tell me what exactly do you mean by that phrase? What opportunity are you referring to may I ask? I am dying to know.:sqconfused:

A DJ has the benefit of working with tracks that are professionally recorded and mixed with the best equipment at the mfrs. recording studio. The vocals are by professionals, rehearsed, already mixed with the music tracks, and recorded to the specs of the artists, musicians, etc....

Though we do, of course set sound for the room, and and levels to preference, technically, the same high quality mix can be heard by popping the disc into our car stereo while driving.

Not the case with karaoke. Studio musicians attempt to emulate the original artists, at several different karaoke companies, with varying degrees of success, the same goes for the mfr. mixing.

The vocals are NOT premixed, change with each AMATEUR singer, each possessing different levels of vocal skills. They sing songs that were not specifically written or meant for them, unlike the vocalists on DJ tracks.

What does all that mean? It means that Karaoke Hosts have to have equipment to do much more with much less.

Optimum Mixers: Digital Key Change, not just pitch control. Not only on the music, but on the vocals, if one wants the best. FULL effects other than
just echo for vocals. Vocals, vocals, vocals...

Oh yeah, BTW- forget about "setting up sound". Every singer is different, and you get about 4 seconds to set up each ( except for regs that you may remember, and have a wee bit more time in advance). That mixer better be very user friendly.

Microphones: Gotta love that crystal clear Sennheiser right? Beautiful sound, crisp, great for announcing. HORRIBLE for karaoke unless every singer is a pro who never makes a mistake. Otherwise, it picks up and amplifies every off-key moment. Flip side: That inexpensive RSQ-10. Hey it works ok, right? People can hear your announcements, and it's not harsh on the ears- cool. Unfortunately, it sounds like you're singing into a baseball mitt.

Speakers: You want excellent sound for karaoke? Sorry, those two way speakers of ANY brand won't measure up to even just decent 3-ways. MID-RANGE is king in karaoke. VOCALS again.

I have actually modified top 2-way to 3-way for just that reason.

House set-up:

Trying to eliminate those dead areas? Got the thump shaking the house?

Not really an equipment statement but:

Dead areas- we actually want a little space, in case of a need for conversation, or to hide from an off-key singer.

Thumpers- ( Sorry, Thunder-man, we just have to agree to disagree here :sqwink:) In virtually ALL of my karaoke venues and events, too bassy is bad. The MAIN complaint for karaoke singers, sound-wise. It can over-power the VOCALS.

Thumpers for dance and DJ, No thumpers for karaoke.

TO STEVE: Yup, I know the last was subjective, so I will add that THIS IS IN MY EXPERIENCE ONLY. :sqwink::sqcool:

Bottom line: Straight DJ equipment is not made for karaoke- it lacks certain required features.

On the other hand, if I want to DJ with my karaoke equipment, I can. In my case I'd have to kick on the thumpers, but since Steve uses thumpers for karaoke, he doesn't require any change whatsoever. ( There ya go, ya one-upped me again! :sqlaugh:)

All That Mr. Joe Said In The Above.

Joe my friend,
The reason why I would not argue this one is because when it comes to equipment, I say "to each his own". I have integrated a club system with the Karaoke computer/software program, Mike Mixer & Karaoke Mikes and stage monitors for 4 years to do Karaoke and it sounded excellent. All the adjustments (Pitch, Tempo, Speed etc) were done on the Karaoke Program and Mike Mixer. Seems to me the quality of the sound system covered up the singer's flaws. I guess we are North and South on this one Bud, so lets call a truce and say "More Power To Each Of Us". Have another drink friend. Can we both agree the sky is blue (sometimes), eh?

BTW I will advise you not to wake up the sleeping Giant AKA Steve/Thunder! Yer don't want to get him started!

EK, Its apparent that there may a lack of comprehension on your part.

I guess it's not possible to comprehend you, yet disagree with you? Please remember, YOU ASKED FOR OPINIONS.

If a person is a cheapskate and does not put a priority on the tools for his business, meaning a decent sound system for his club, how in the world do you expect him to call in qualified help for a fee?

I comprehend all this. What I don't comprehend is: knowing all this, why do you involve yourself with this idiot?

Some people are beyond help. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink! Ever heard that phrase?

It seems clear to me that this club owner is in that category. How about you?

That is like reporting to work as a cabbie. You are given a cab with faulty brakes, one headlamp working, the ignition is hand wired, it has bad tires and no spare tire. So you say "No problem Boss, I'll drive it and tomorrow when I am off, I'll come back and fix it for you". Good luck! Apparently your life is not a priority to you!

By your own report, the sound system continued to work the rest of that Saturday without you, crappy though it may have sounded. No lives were lost.

All those reasons are why houston did exactly what any experienced club/bar jock with legitimate equipment and safety concerns would have done.

No, it's not. I count myself among those who differ with this statement.

Rox is 100% RIGHT! Wait.... did I just say that?

You may not know it, but we are not in disagreement here. As stated above, you used KARAOKE products to do karaoke. Same as I do. I never said one couldn't integrate karaoke necessities into a straight DJ rig, only that they are not a standard part of one.

If the the clubs speakers were 3-ways, then we are on the EXACT same page, and only differ in that you use virtual karaoke products for mixing and I use - Ludditely speaking- the real thing....:sqwink:

See, we agreed! NOW will you pass the dam vodka?

PS- Nope, don't wanna P.O. Thunderman either, hence the BOLD DISCLAIMER. :sqlaugh:

Yes it was Three way system. Skyy or Grey Goose?
