How do we change the luddite mentality?

Sorry, I did not intend for my comment about computer vs CD quality to be antagonistic. My point was that the laptop is just another player.

I cannot completely depend/rely on a laptop to run my entire show. I must have backup players available. Most of what I present comes off the laptop, but I have a very deep inventory on CD and MD. As for quality, the difference between the average 192kb MP3 and a Var Bit Rate WMA is like night and day. Also, the WMA file size is reasonable. I always use the best sounding source.

Yes, the rig can be a bit messy visually, but for me, it's sound quality over "looks". Ultimately, I will be running a pair (exact duplicates) of laptops. That will take a lot of hours ripping, and a lot of disk space. But, hey, I'm 30 years into it now...

hhahahaha..... well if your still in the process of ripping I'd change tactics and go 320 with mp3 hardrive space is cheap now if you haven't bought a hardrive in 30 years your in for a pleasant surprise... :sqwink: There is a mell of a diff between 192 and 320 and if you really want the best quality you could rip to wav and forget about compression all together.... then if space is an issue back that up to an archival harddrive and then go ahead and convert to mp3 on your show drive.

I don't do any mixing or scratching, cept for my er... nevermind, but correct me if I'm wrong but you can use mp3 but for best results wav might be better right?

sorry but I am still hitting the rocks to make my next round record its a little heavy but it can crack a tune anytime its hit!!!

:)

I myself am a PC kinda Guy... I can do way more with the laptop then I can with a CD player... Plus my setup allows me to duplicate every track up to 8 times (I have 1 320GB hard drive, 2 laptops networked, both running Traktor, so technically i can make one song into 8. I wanna see you CD/ Record guys do that). It also makes finding song easy (no flipping threw crates) My load is virtually nil (no boxes on boxes of CD's/ Records).
I guess it is all on what you are comfortable with... I know, I myself would never go back to CD's or Records. The only way I would go back is with MP3 DVDs with like 1500 songs on each one...
Thanks

I see the Laptop as the future for presenting music to guests at any party.

That said, I do feel that for me it's still a year or so away, mainly because I'm still more comfortable with CD's, only because I am able to mix them and burn them to disc, and I am getting a better sound with this media, than I get when playing them with the laptop ....as MP3 files......

But that's just me......and down the road when I make the plunge, there will be a "learning curve" to endure, I realize that....... before I can be proficient with that new media....

Gasp... should I post a picture of my rig?

-Dennis

Ya know, I've asked all over the forum, but know one will tell me how to add a picture to my post...

If this were a REAL message board instead of PC based, I could just tape it on...:sqwink:

In answer to your original question: Why? Those here who have visited your show say you do a top job. I believe, have been told, and earn the fee that tells me that I do too, and for the same reason- The pride and love of what we do. Nothing else matters. Again, I am equipped and knowledgeable enough to run a PC based show. I just choose not to.

Does a D.J. player exist that could playback mp3 encoded DVDs or (for more capacity still)... Blu-Ray discs?

(I can't find a smilie that drools)

Would prefer FLAAC or Ogg Vorbis, if I was going computer. FLAAC is non-lossy compression and Ogg Vorbis is a lossy format similar to mp3 but is a smoother richer sounding codec for same bit rate and frequency.

Don't know about Blu-Ray, but V2GO and pioneer both make CD players that will do the other two- no PC required ( a memory stick for the MP3s into the USB port of the player).

You choose wrong and now you must pay the price muwahahahahahahaha!!!!

You will be forced to do the funky chicken :jfactor1:

Well, ok, but only if I get to keep the chicken suit- I have a wedding coming up, and I get tired of wearing a tux.....

The question smacks of a real ignorance. You don't seem to fully grasp any of the technologies you mention.

Personally, I didn't change to CD until there was CD equipment capable of reproducing what I could do with vinyl in real time at the speed and level of dexterity that I require.

Likewise, I will not completely switch to software until there is a singular sufficiently capable solution. Computer DJing is still much too fragmented - with lots of good ideas all scattered across different products with a host compatibility issues.

When enough "good stuff" all comes together in one product - that's when you'll see my CDs curbside.

Bob you dont visit for a few months and immediately share that warm Charm you have shared here at every opportunity. Thanks for answering the post question appreciate it as much as I do having you around.

Although I don't DJ anymore, I think one aspect of this that has not been mentioned yet is customer perception. Many potential clients (especially when everywhere you turn you see stories about illegal downloading) view computer DJs as just someone who sits around "stealing" their music to use at events. Also, the fear of a computer "locking up" in the middle of an event could be in the minds of a potential client.

Any new technology is going to be met with resistance, no matter what it is. As much as a technology nation as we have become, computers still scare the hell out of some people, and certain clients want to work with something they are familiar with, in this case, that would be CDs.

C'mon JT be a real man !

and those that cling to CD's, Vinyl, and other archaic forms of music playback. ...we believe in computer based DJing, we know it's better. How do we change the luddite mentality

That is so arrogant it could only be written by someone too young to have ever bought a hit song on vinyl, or too green to own a top of the line CD player.

I'd be surprised if there's much more than 20% of current computer based DJs that actually care to do anything more than run a playlist. :sqcool:

awfully presumptuous for a self proclaimed intelligent man arent we Bob? Ignorance is also an ASSumption spoken from one who tends to show ignorant traits at every opportunity (majority of ones post count.)

Tsk Tsk, Jon. :sqerr:

I dunno I've been using Mixmeister pro since V3 and haven't had problems with it. In most cases it does things as good or better than I used to with CDs or Vinyl

Theres always much too big a deal about choice of media
