Death Penalty

I am all for the death penalty. I would just like it not to be able to be used when the only evidence is eyewitness testimony, which is habitually unreliable.

While I believe when a person commits a terrible crime like the one above, he should forfiet his or her right to live among us. We collectively can decide what warrants such a drastic act as the death penalty. Personally, I don't really care if it's a deterent or not. I will feel better knowing that there is no chance that this person can decide to do it again. If they find god in their time on death row, great, tell god I said hi!

Every life is immensely valuable. Obviously, some people don't think that. For those that don't, I say they should pay the ultimate price, which is their own life.
 
If you kill someone, why shouldn't you be killed also. The crimminal mind is not appreciative of anything less. I have no compassion for the scum such as the ones who killed this soldier and it would not make me feel the least bit uncomfortable watching them swing at the end of a rope at a public hanging.
 
These guys robbed this Marine who was home on leave and then because he only had $8 they put a gun to his neck and pulled the trigger. They deserve to be executed without fanfare or fuss. It sickens me what they did and they don't deserve to live. For me it's not complicated at all. It's punishment and cleaning up society. They deserve punishment for what they did. Every breath that they take is wasted air.

I agree. Scum such as this need to be purged from society - FOREVER
 
I totally disagree with the death penalty. For starters the justice system makes too many errors. There are dozens of innocent on death row at any time

Second the numbers are skewered. How many millionaiers have been executed in our time. Most of death row inmates are of colour and poor. its a little easier to dispose of a fellow who dosen't have a decent lawyer

And just to show I am not a total Liberal it makes an end to the suffering for the criminal. I don't believe jail should be a day at the spa and there should be no ammenities aside from the essentials of life
 
That is my only reservation and concern Jeff. No wrongly convicted person should die and that would be a tragedy. The justice system does make mistakes and sometimes even in death penalty cases.
 
Due process of law by an organized legal system is significantly different from the whims of a thug. To compare the two is insane.

Yes courts are not infallible. That's one of the realities of being human. But, letting society bear this unreasonable burden of these people is nuts. It was their choice to be there, not mine. My choice is to have leaders with the guts to get rid of cancer.

To make many mistakes of injustice against society out of fear for one mistake is short sighted.

If you want to keep them alive, find a way that it doesn't cost me.

But it's not one mistake its many many mistakes. There are states (13 of themto be exact) that think nothing of pulling the switch on someone so severly mentally challenged that they still believe in Santa Claus.

Wrongful convictions resulting in the death penalty stand at 6.2%...Thats the ones they know are wrongfully convicted I would venture a guess at better than 20% is the real rate. Of the 18 mentioned in that article 3 are white

Of the people on death row a high percentage are of colour and the majority are poor. When they start hanging Millionares (think OJ or Robert Blake) then mabye I'll reconsider
 
I agree with the OJ thing. I personaly feel that the court system is a shambles. There seems to be a sigificant lack of blind justice and equal access for the poor. To me making a demographic statment about racial inequality in prisions means nothing. But to cite injustice in the courts due to greater wealth buying greater representation is significant.

There are problems in our system. To ask our society to bear the brunt of it by having killers, rapists or other very destructive people walking around in the streets, or having to pay huge amounts of money to support them, is very unreasonable.

We have erred the wrong way.

Theoretically speaking, the thugs may be right, and you may be wrong...


Not my place to judge whether somebody deserves to live or die. If somebody tries to harm me, well then it comes down to survival at the moment.

But, I can't sit in a room, and say somebody I don't know deserves to have their life ended.

Thats great but we aren't talking about a par 4 it's someones life. Killing someone is wrong from either side but if it's unjust it's worse...

Mabye we should hold the Jury responsible in the wrongful ones wouldn't you say they killed an innocent person? How would you like to sit on that panel?

No, hold the system responsible. I would gladly sit on that panel. But, having had a sister murdered by a convicted rapist gets me out of every jury pool since.

I am sure you didn't, the atypical mindset of law enforcement is that everyone not wearing a badge is a perp some just haven't been arrested yet.

Page County Virginia, the sherriff and several deputies are under investigation by the FBI for possible rackateering charges along with several others. My brother in law was threatened and run out of the county by the sherriff because of what he knew, he is now under the protection of the FBI until he testifies.

Greene County Virginia, watch the federal courts closely you will see the names of the Sheriff and several deputies pop up real soon in another Federal RICO trial along with several lawyers, judges and politicians. Once in a great while the real criminals are brought to justice.

There are many cases of innocent people being jailed or killed, and the most often repeated line from police officers has been, "well if they weren't guilty of this they were guilty of something else so justice has been served".

Usually for me, it's the Son of God -- but that's only after 15 beers or so -- I'm just a cousin when sober though... ;)
