lol have to tell you a friend went and bought a custom system from a local store here and paid just over $1550.00 for it

now I went to a place I deal with and bought better specs and online gear
than he did oh I did this 1 week after he bought his so no time for a big price drop or rise

it was as I said built better at the cost of $663.00

now where he went they ripp off people if they have no idea how to get a system

but thats life these days

Well, it finally arrived today. My new Investment. Putting it through its paces. It IS Zippy Fast! This is one of the few times and places that it will "see" the Internet. Now to load my Music Library, Karaoke Library, Videos then Traktor, MEP 7000 Karaoke Software and other DK related Software. Lots of work!
Whatever happened to the days of going to the Record Store, picking out some Vinyl bringing them home playing them a few times and then putting them in a crate until they were needed? The grass may seem greener on the other side but you still have to cut it. LOL
 
I find it pretty much true to the word what Dennis mentioned. If you need specs and have no clue ask Dell to shop for you and pay the luxury taxes etc. In Canutes case and capacity I think he did the right thing.

your laptop; Dell's "shelf" is their website.....You bought a nice laptop; it's just not unique to you.....
Dell does market through brick and mortar; we all know that

to most, custom applies to the customer spec'ing each and every component with the unit being specifically hand assembled

I said it was custom built not unique! They did not place my name on it! It is like buying a hamburger, you can choose what you want on it or take it as it comes.
 
Dell wont ever see a damn cent from me ever again! I bought a desktop PC for home use and the MB took a big chit right after the 1 year warranty was up...

Think i payed $550ish for it new, and the freakin MB they wanted $450 for it!

Its all fun and games with Dell till you need a repair done. they use wierd stuff
proprietary to only Dell machines i'm told

Sorry to hear that. Mine is over 6 years old and still running. I will be using it again this weekend. I don't rely on the off the shelf Models and Home Version Operating System and Software.
 
i prefer to buy my own parts and build it myself

My "old" laptop, HP Pavilion zd8000 (2004 vintage) began acting up about a month ago. Had started "shutting down" while I was on the internet. Internet Explorer (6.0) kept giving me warnings about excessive memmory useage. Had a wedding April 21st and I was so worried that it was going to croak or shut down without notice--it didn't, but it sure made me nervous. I actually made a CD of special songs that were on my external HD that the B&G had specified to be played...just in case.

Reading this post I almost made the mistake of "over specking" the new laptop. On April 30th, I purchased a new Laptop; HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us Entertainment Laptop:
Inatel Core I7-2870QM 2.20Ghz, 4GB DDR3 (upgraded to 8 GB), 640GB HD, 17.3" 1600x900 diagonal HD + BrightView LED-backlit Display, Intel HD Graphics 3000, Blu-Ray player and Super Multi DVD Burner, WiFi N, 9-cell Btry, Windows 7 Home Premium, Office, and Beats Audio.

I noticed that the old computer seems to work just fine when I'm not on the Internet. Used it last night at a Bat Mitzvah with no problems. So I will be using it for ONLY DJ purposes from here on out. It has my OTSAV dj software.

Now I've got to purchase a second license to put OTSAV on the NEW computer. I've been holding off getting the license because OTS is supposed to be coming out with a new product to replace OTSAV. Esperance is the new software but is way behind its release date. Anyway, I shouldn't wait too long to put OTS on the new computer.

Any comments regarding the NEW computer would be appreciated.

Did I make the correct decision?

Spec wise it looks fine .. could be a bit overkill, but that's not a bad thing. For what I see out there, and I think it was mentioned above, a current generation i5 processor with 6-8Gb RAM is sufficient for most DJ/KJ work. If you do videos, especially if you edit them, both an i7 processor and a dedicated graphics card are beneficial.

You have a quad core i7 - should carry you for a while and plenty of RAM. The other pieces (bluray, HD screen) are just niceties. Things like Beats Audio are only useful if you play music out of the laptops speakers or maybe if you use the headphone jack to go to your mixer (though the best way out is still usually via a good USB audio converter - either external or in the mixer/controller).

So depending on the price paid, you look to have a winner.

As for the older laptop, usually a refresh of the operating system and at least 4Gb RAM will make it shine. If you have less than 4Gb, you might be able to get a memory upgrade relatively (<$50) cheap at newegg, tiger direct or similar.

A lot of us are waiting on Win 8 RC before we release any new stuff Art. I can't speak for the OTS guys, although I have a great deal of respect for their talents. But it's possible they are waiting as well... You also have to get a certain amount of mileage out of a release, otherwise you lose money on R&D.

It can take a year or two of coding and testing to release some software -- you can't knock out versions every week, and hope they'll work properly.

I'm running 4 GB on my lappies. So far, no hiccups, and I run a ton of stuff simul. I upgraded one to 8 GB, and saw no plausible difference. Audio and video all work fine under Win 7 (64) with 4 GB.

FireFox has become the devil on my computers -- eats memory like you wouldn't believe. Used to love it, now I hate it.
 
You are correct that 4Gb should be sufficient, but with memory so cheap, the 8 Gb doesn't hurt, especially with the on-board graphics cards. I wouldn't usually buy memory from the vendor. I buy the lowest possible config, and then turn to newegg (or similar), where it's usually half the cost.
 
wait till you guys see/play with win 8

all i can say is you will want to go back to win 3.11
