Code of ethics......

Let's see I would love to find that thread and offer my insight to the situation.

It's a 4 star hotel, The only way a DJ has to get to the room he is DJing is to roll his equipment within eye site of the paying customers enjoying their pricey meals. Is the Venue Manager wrong to not want his paying customers to see DJs use their own discretion and judgement on what they should wear while setting up their equipment. Looking at the Video several posts up I would have to side with the Venue Manager.
Nope, they had to load in from the back. Maybe someone can find that thread. I believe that Ruben Mora might have been the Author.

I think the number 1 code in a DJ's code of ethics: Knowing what the word ethics means:)

Agree with Scott here .. Almost nothing said in this thread of late is about ETHICS .. Ethics are morality issues .. overcharging a customer, substituting something in the contract for something cheaper hoping it won't be noticed, etc., etc. .. How someone looks, how their equipment looks, how they carry themselves, have nothing to do with Ethics ..

Please open a new thread to rail on business issues.

I see it different and the practice of not having your own transport system and relying on a facility to have one is about ETHICS. Ethics is about what is morally right or wrong and we can't even get DJs to agree in this one little situation, They choose to spin it off to a bad business practice or some other excuse.

Why would someone consider over charging a customer a ethics problem but scoff at the idea that not having the right equipment to do their job is not a ethics problem. Shaking my head in disbelief.

I see it completely differently. Using or not using a cart is about doing things efficiently or not and will vary depending on the situation. I typically use a cart, because it's easier for me. But someone who carries their gear in is unethical?

Someone who is looking to build muscles and get exercise would be unethical because they decided to take a little longer to carry some things in? Really?

Relying on a venue to provide a transport system is not unethical either. It's just stupid. They won't always have one and/or you might be waiting for it.

No .. transportation isn't about ethics .. it's about appearance. Ethics are a MORAL issue, so unless your religion stipulates a way to carry equipment, it's not ethics.

And as to overcharging .. If you pad a price to a customer up front to include things that you won't be providing, that's an ethic issue, it's not illegal, but it's immoral, and that's ETHICS.

Ahhhhhhhh But it happens every weekend at countless facilities across this great land of ours. DJs relying on others to help them make a living yet not sharing the fee with those individuals.

To your post Scott I am not talking about the DJ that is able to transport everything without a transport system. Can't say I have ever seen one of those guys but it could be possible. However human nature is to take the easiest route and i suspect those individuals would ask for a dolly from the facility and then resort to carrying their equipment.

Asking for help is not a moral issue. If you are asking someone to do a job that you should be paying someone for, then yes.

Morally Right or Wrong

To show up at a facility without a means to transport your equipment to your set up point?

Is this just image and pretense?

Back at ya Proformance

It's purely pretentious egotistical bull___. Are these people still in grade school?

Tell me, wat is morally wrong about making 10 trips to the 12th floor ballroom and carrying your gear by hand?
Can I use the elevator - or do I have to bring one of those too?

Is it Morally right for me to walk into a facility and ask if they have a Dolly I can borrow and watch the employee stop what he is doing to locate one for me and bring it to me? Is that really in his Job Description to assist Mobile DJs?

Is it Morally right for me to bring equipment that i can not get into it's proper location without asking someone that works at the facility to help me manually move my equipment? Placing the employee in the position that he might hurt himself is really something we should do to make our living?

I have seen this numerous times with countless professionals that give it no second thought. I can watch DJs post here on threads that they leave their working area at the end of the night as clean as they found it in consideration of the Banquet Staff but wouldn't even question doing the two examples that I have provided.

What type of help should a DJ ask for that would be acceptable.

I'm paid to get my equipment to point A to perform then to perform to my ending time.

You're not getting paid to move equipment, unless you are a mover. You're getting paid for the whole job.

I went to one place where the elevator was broken when I arrived. I asked the guy in charge if they can provide someone to help me carry up my subs up the stairs as I wasn't expecting a broken elevator. Wasn't my fault I couldn't use something that was useable the day before but not today (basically their responsibility). They had some kid help me for the 2 minutes it took and he left.

If they help me unload everything, then yea, I might tip them $5-$10. I did tip that guy $10 later, only because he helped me move everything back down (not just the subs).

Yes, it often is in their job description.

It's not a moral question, and what if they just say: "no?" ...On the other hand what if they say: "yes?"
The Boy Scouts have a motto: "Be prepared." That's not a moral statement - it's a practical consideration. If this were seriously your approach then why wait until you arrive. You could call ahead and see if they have a cart you can use. You can ask if they have a scissor lift, ladder, etc. before you go to the trouble of bringing your own.

So, if I call ahead and verify that all of this is available to me, why should I care what impression it makes on you observing from the sidelines with your little rock-n-roller cart and step stool you brought from home?

{Why do I feel like I'm talking to a 6 year old?}

The solution to this is simple. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else.
This problem only exists in your own head.

Again, nothing moral about it. If a DJ's success relies totally on finding someone or something at a venue to get equipment where it needs to be, they will quickly find themselves in trouble. If he or she is able to convince someone to help them, good for them.

It's simply not practical to hope someone will help you. But certainly nothing morally ethically wrong with it

If it's morally wrong to ask for help to move equipment, then it's morally wrong to ask silly hypothetical questions about choices and call those ethical issues on a DJ board;)

And this takes me back to the beginning of the thread where I have supposedly Professional DJs arguing with a simple fact that a DJ should carry his own transportation system to move his equipment.

You would think this simple item would be a no brainer that all DJ's could agree on yet sadly it is not.

Well, then thank you for reminding us all that it is not immoral or unethical to dwell on the inane.

You are completely missing what most people are trying to tell you.

Carrying your own transportation system makes GREAT sense. WHO is disagreeing with you on that?

It seems that EVERYONE is disagreeing that this issue is neither moral nor ethical.

I would say a supposed professional DJ could understand that.
