It is perfectly acceptable to criticize, and Canute's criticism is valid whether you agree or not.. What authority do you have to tell him what is or isn't his job?

In kind, what authority does Canute (or other) have to tell anyone else what their job is? Also, by your example, all criticism is 'valid' whether you agree or not.

Most egregious -what qualifies you declare someone else's party planner clueless?

I'm pretty certain that as experienced as you say you are, you could figure out if a planner was clueless or not.

No one has said they wanted to do all the things that have been mentioned. And yes, I would believe that everyone agrees it should be hammered out ahead of time. But sometimes it doesn't actually go the way it was planned. Sorry, but I have not had that experience.

Houston, if you expect me to believe you've NEVER in your experience had something come up unexpected you are lying kind sir.
So now you are calling me a liar! Let me ask you something. Have you ever No Showed a Client?

Criticism is by definition a disagreement. Disagreeing with some of you is what seems to be the biggest issue - whether it's a planner, a client, or another DJ.

Criticism is an act of exposing the merits as well as the demerits .. Somehow that gets lost.

I'll answer the question Houston, but first I'd like you to reiterate that you've never had something go unplanned at an event. I'd like to get that on record officially. LOL
How could I have something go unplanned at a Wedding that is not mine? Of course not! Now answer my question. Have you ever No Showed a Client?

You need to get a grasp on the English Language and comprehension. People can do stupid things without being stupid. Many times when I am referring to a thread or post being a stupid one, if anyone takes that as a name calling then they must really identify themselves as not only doing or saying something stupid but actually being stupid. So if anyone gets up in arms about the word, then they must be experiencing an identity crisis. I would suggest to that person that they get professional help.

Again, you are MISSING THE POINT.
It's not what you say, it's how you SAY IT.
I know you didn't call anyone STUPID, you IMPLIED it.

And by the way, I have been working with the English language for 30-some years.
It seems it is you who do not comprehend it.

And yes...Steve nailed it.
No one was saying we as DJ's should be doing someone else's job.
The issue was whether we should take a moment to check to see if it was done before we announce it.
Do you check the next song in your headphones before you play it?

EXCELLENT! So if the planner does not show up you will not facilitate and coordinate with other vendors because it's not in your contract to do so. Nor do you take any responsibility for anything that is not directly associated with the music. And that my friend is why you don't do weddings. Thank you for your honesty.

As to your question I have never no showed a client. ALthough I'm not sure what that has to do with the conversation

It seems you have a lapse in memory, is this a Mike Phenomenon? Check YOUR post #31 where you said Quote: "Yes, it IS your job"

Answer MY questions!
When was the last time you did a wedding, and how many have you done this year.

Bob, you clearly make assertions that many on this board are somehow dishonest or attempting to pull the wool over clients' eyes. Try to play word games if you wish but sorry, it's easy to see through and everyone knows it. Married 5 times, eh? Makes sense now.

Again - thank you for offering to define my motivations for me but, I will defer to my own sources.

Did you not already tell us that the intention of your blog is to sway prospects over to your way of thinking? Sales by it's very nature is prone to overstatements and exaggerations that while not dishonest - evoke a wolf in sheep's clothing perception of the salesman if the prospect recognizes them as over reaching claims, or exaggerated importance.

With regard to overstating things: The weakest part of your article is not what you say you do it's the way you devalue the customer's ability and input. You have embedded the message that you know what's best for them - and even if true - it doesn't work.

You've twice now just tried to tell me what I think and what my intentions are. I'm trying to tell you - that tendency is also present in the blog you wrote to your prospects. If you recall, your first draft actually started with an expectation of being flamed by other DJs. Where did that expectation come from? Why was squashing DJ dissent so important that you made it the opening paragraph in an article presumably written for your brides and not other DJs? Who is it you are writing too? I'm suggesting that tendency extends beyond just the omitted paragraph.

Try writing that same article and make the same points as though you were speaking to your boss - (putting the customer in control) and while it will feel wrong - I bet it will end up with more readers and a wider popular response.

Ok so if you have never No Showed a client and you are asking us to believe that, why then is it so impossible to believe that I have never been at an Event/Wedding where there was a Planner who did not show up? Maybe your Planners don't get paid so thats why some don't show up. In Houston The Professional Wedding Planners are Licensed. One is welcome to do their own Wedding or a family's or relative's Wedding but cannot go out and advertise themselves without the required Licenses. That is why they always show up because they are professionals. Take a look at this Link: http://www.license123.com/Permits/Texas/Houston/Event-and-Wedding-Planning

You are not on my "Ignore List" so I will respond to your question. "It is none of your damn business!" Stay with the conversation. If you were a student at Harvard Business School, would you discredit the Professor what he is teaching you because he does not have an operating business?
What I do know is that the Weddings that I have done and will do will look nothing like yours! It is no wonder some of you only post mainly pics of people dancing. You don't even have a belief in yourselves as a DJ.

You misunderstand my friend. You said that you had never been at a wedding or an event where something had gone wrong. I then asked you what you would do IF a planner did not show up. You still have not answered the question. So let me reiterate. You are dj'ing a wedding and the planner (hypothetically) is a no show, let's say their car breaks down) What would you do?

I would do what the Professional Planner would do if the DJ did not show up!

FWIW, I have no-showed a client.

2 years ago, we had a "1000 year flood". I had worked Saturday night in Memphis and was scheduled Sunday to work another in Nashville. On Sunday, I made it to within 50 miles and the interstates were shut down with no way to get thru. It took me 2 days to get home. If I remember correctly, the wedding was a fiasco as well. They were going to try and go ahead and hold it but the golf course where it was being held was flooded out and was without electricity. We ended up, having a do-over about a year later and yes, I DJed that event and it was a good one.

Gawd, you're full of sh$t.

EXCELLENT! FInally a concrete answer, you would do nothing. Not coordinate with the vendors, nor manage or facilitate the specialty dances. You would stand there and let the night unravel around you. Thank you for your candidness
I knew that answer would evoke a moronic response from you.
When people ask stupid questions I feel obligated to give sarcastic answers. I have a piece of advise for you. Save your breath, you will need it for your Blow Up Date tonight. Have a good day.

You are beginning to evolve into the annoying category! I am not interested in playing your little games. Have a good day and go read your Wedding Planner Book!
