Nobodies been able to figure out what my diagrammed system is yet -- hell, I don't even know what it is. But it sounds good :)

The question is: Do you actually care how many way(s) it is...?

I would like Canute or Al to show me where a system HAS to have a split Hi/Mid/Low to be 3-way and not Hi/Mid-Low/Really Low or something similar. Or a definition that says a it must be via a cross-over. Just because you believe it to be that way, does not mean it is. And Canute, you still haven't given ANY backup on why it isn't a 3-way and lord knows I gave many reasons why it is.

I said before and I will say again. It is NOT a true 3-Way because in your model of a 3-Way there is no defined cut offs from the whole given spectrum going three separate ways to three separate transducers. There is too much of an overlay between the Sub and the Woofer in the two way cabinet.

Here is an ideal situation. When I run 3 way, if I were to turn off the amp or signal going to my subs/lows, there WILL be a loss of music and I would not be able to continue the show. This is how a true three way operates, lose one part and a whole section of the frequency spectrum is gone.

In what you call a three way in this instance, if you turn off the Sub, you will STILL get Bass from the two way speaker. The show can continue with no problem. This is done every day by DJs who use two way speakers with no subs.

For S&G, let's assume the top is a 2-way powered system like say an EV ZXA1, with an 8" mid-bass driver (a top used by several here) and it sits on top of a powered 18" sub (lets say an EV ELX118P - also used by folks). Both get a full-range signal without the benefit of an external crossover - not ideal, but done). The ZXA1 has a "useable" frequency response from about 90Hz and up (though it's claimed to 60). The 118 has a built-in 130Hz cutoff (like your described system).

I was not describing tops and bottoms, you were. I was describing two different speaker cabinets. One of them a two way and the other a single transducer. By the way A threeway as described in Electronic Training is an ideal application. Other designs to encompass it is simply modifications. The usability of the frequencies are a matter of different brands and manufacturers not category of speakers.
 
What .. you're changing things again - You were describing tops and bottoms? Your first post says:

So is the described system above a 2-way or 3-way? Simple question.

It's Canute's thread and his scenario, so let's let Canute answer (and please show your work).
 
Like I said Steve, it is a 2 way and you have all the right in the world to disagree. I gave you an example of what would happen in a true three way if one of the signals was pulled. You would not be able to continue the show. I am not interested in a modified two way becoming a three way. This is the reason I specified a Full Range Signal going to the two way speaker and the same signal going to the Sub.

And if you pulled the sub out of the EV system I offered above (which fits your system description), you would hear it in an instant .. same as your example, so that would be a 3-way, wouldn't it???

And, not sure if you read through, but each and every situation I outlined assumed a FULL RANGE SIGNAL going to each cabinet.
 
As you stated before, "the Ideal way". This is the way I view any system, Ideal, 2 way, 3 way or 4 way. Pop a music spectrum signal out of the chain and thats the end of music. Good music!

Using your own logic here, if I turn off my subs, I lose the low freq's. If I turn off the tops, I lose high and mid freq. Does this now meet your definition of a 3 way?

In the system I presented there are no selector switches. What you are proposing with your system, switches and all, is a two way with added bass.

A 2 way with added bass? How does one 'add' bass? My top reproduces a range, my 12" reproduces another and the sub reproduces another - all within specified parameters. Your definition of a 3 way, (top, mid and bass) is exactly what I have. I do not have a top and mid/low with another low.
