School & Teen Events Any thoughts on these? I found another potential speaker system for me.

But how does one start in the school industry? boom had to start somewhere no?

Simple, When Boom Started there was noone like them. It'd be hard for you to compete in your market against something , no offense you may not be able to compete with ( Due to no fault of your own. ). I have a very large company that specializes in school dances and i might even have some issues trying to compete in that market! lol. Your only hope for the schools might be to find the smaller schools that can't afford boom, or to travel just a little outside of your current area to just outside the reach of Boom. A good way to start would be to try and land Middle school dances because the teachers also network with the high schools and the kids go to high schools and if they love you at the Middle School , they'll request you when they're in high school. Good luck!

so your going to buy this awesome array system to try and put a dent in a company that has liquidated the market? How do you intend to do that with less than what they provide?

There Jon, I fixed that for you! :triwink:

well see every school i have talked to has said that they are fed up with boom and wish they could get out of their contracts... and that they love the concert type show, but HATE the price tag. those contracts have to end some time. If i can build up a good ammount of equipment in the meantime, i can swoop in at the ends of those contracts and woo those schools with a similar but more effective show that doesnt cost as much. That is my master plan...

Money is the problem...

Im sorry what exactly are you asking?
I think I asked in plain English...lets try again......how much cash do you now have available to buy gear?

Mr. Griffin..... looking on your website there appears to be a picture where you have "rigged" your top speaker cabinets to a standard I-Beam truss with the use of something that looks suspiciously like ratchet straps you buy from Menards or Home Depot. With these "certified riggers" you have, where are the spansets? Where is the steel safety? What are the load ratings for what looks like plastic tripods?

Sir, you need to take baby steps to get where you want to go. I know you don't agree with the larger DJ companies that rent gear, but in this case it is probably your only option. You're going to get yourself hurt, going to waste A LOT of money, and in the end hurt the industry. We've been very fortunate in the Chicago market to have schools open to the ideas of full production, but I've always been under the impression that it's only going to take one idiot and one incident to ruin it for everyone. Don't be that idiot!

Excuse me if i sound rude here, but if you dont know my setup you cant professionally judge that.

Firstly that is steel ibeam trussing rated at 200lbs the stands are steel as well rated at 400lbs each (I dont even know where you got plastic from? who in gods name would buy plastic trussing?) secondly those tops are custom built line arrays that weigh 13lbs apiece and yes those ratchet straps can easily hold 24 lbs without a problem, and the trussing can easily hold 48lms worth of speakers without a problem as well. so you clearly have no clue what you are talking about. And i find your comment about "Dont be that idiot" rather rude as well. Why in F**ks name would i put the lives of other peoples children in danger. everything is looked over by certified rigger prior to the event and everything is deemed safe. so unless you have something productive to say, please dont say anything.

So, you own no gear of your own, don't have money for gear and you want to take over $30k school events that you can't get because you don't have the necessary gear or the money to buy said gear to take the gigs.

Does that about sum it up.
Nope i own all my own trussing and lighting. I have 20 feet of 12inch square global truss, 4 Chauvet q-beams 2 chauvet Min spots 4 chauvet color strip minis 4 eliminator ex-4s 4 led moon flowers, a UFO fixture, and a line dancer. also i have 3 12 foot steel ibeam trusses with steel tripods that i can put up as well. Additionally i own a smaller sound system for parties, but i use my uncles for larger venues for the time being.

THAT about sums it up.

You need to find out who Anthony M is and the events he's done.

I personally dont care. I hate to sound insensitive but if he is going to sit there and call me unprofessional and quote inaccurate information about a setup he knows nothing about... I have no interest in what he has done and who he is...

He's not calling you an idiot, he's stating that when an idiot does something stupid the gigs for everyone will vanish. When you fly stuff (Remember the thread where we mentioned you should get certified?) there are a lot of calculations that need to be made and that is to prevent injuries. Whatever you're flying need to be attached to something designed, tested and with the load capacity for said item. If you use something that is not designed for that and it fails you're screwed because you'll be paying for errors for a very long time. That's what he's referring to.

I am not certified. I hired a Certified rigger who has been working in the field for 20 years and knows what he is doing. As i mentioned, everything is planned to ensure saftey ahead of time, as my rigger consults a structural engineer who looks at the building blueprints (And if we arent flying from ceiling) the trussing to ensure that everything will work properly and he over engineers EVERYTHING for safety purposes. Like i said those speakers in the pix weigh 12 lbs (the 13 was a slip of my finger on the number pad. lol) so a ratchet strap rated to hole 350 lbs is perfectly capable of holding 2 12 lb speakers. on Steel trussing rated for 200 lbs held up by 4 tripods that are rated to hold 400 lbs. Im not an idiot so i dont appreciate the way he phrased what he said... he was implying that i dont know what im doing, which is simply no true. I Dont take lightly to people saying i sacrifice safty...

That lighting list though big in numbers doesnt have the capability two or four movers have. If your out to replace them you will need their weapons but properly used to impress or exceed the current mode. I find your in WISH mode here and with the help of The DJ Gurus of schools you can buy lots of DVDs but in the end you need the gear to do it. How do you intend to gain equal weapons? Once that is attained you will then have yourself armed for the battle until its just a dream. The speaker setups your considering or have on your wish list are pretty on paper when you gain them then lets talk about how to form the game plan to overtake Boom. Talking a big game is one thing succeeding much different. In a fight I have always said You have done the easy part in opening your mouth (in this case typing your point) Lets see what ya got.

it would be impossible to gain equal weaponry in lighting. Boom uses DL.3 Fixtures which are upwards of $20,000 a piece. (thats right twenty thousand dollars) and they effectively do NOTHING impressive with them. the q beams and min spots are moving heads the q-beams are 60 watts the min spots are 15 watts.

I understand what you are saying though. but without a rich daddy, there is no way anyone could ever compete. they have created a monopoly on chicago's southwest suburban high schools...

so keep us posted on the progress in breaking that monopoly. Go after some of the small schools consider doing some non sponsored teen events to gain a following and possibly you have a rep that can help break in when the contracts expire. Just for ****s and giggles what did that unnamed /School gig innovator non imitator DJ GOD have to say about breaking into the circuit? Its worth sharing what you already have in your plan so share that and perhaps I could assist further as I have been doing schools small big inbetween, Rec Centers, Teen clubs, Elementary, Middle Schools, High Schools and Universities for over 20 yrs. Now in Toronto I am beginning to break into the market as well.

you really shouldnt name names of people who dont reside on this site. You need to sit down and set up a business plan. Google is your friend and it can get you thinking as to what pertains or what doesnt and then ween it down to a fine line then come share it as there are too many variables and only you know the answers. Hell Im busy to but Im responding. Hope this helps.
