Extension Cords

These are the kind that I'd like to have custom made to my specs. I have a local electrician friend who is doing some research to see if he can find the material.

Don't know if I'm reading too much into this - but I'd never make my own cords. I'm not a licensed electrician, nor do I have liability insurance that protects me from the risks of building my own gear.

I buy all heavy duty 14/3 outdoor extension cords in the clearence sales after Christmas... and if I need more power - I'll run extra cords. It's more work taping it down, but if the breaker blows or a MaitreD pulls my expension cord for the coffee machine, atleast everything doesn't die in one fell swoop.

My father has been a licensed electrician for the last 25 years. I'm having him prepare them for me. As far as the cords I ended up buying. I got them from MonoPrice.
Picked up 2 50ft 12/3
1 100ft 12/3 > which is becoming 4 25ft
4 15ft 14/3
4 10ft 14/3.

I am only putting ends on the 4 25ft cords.

I am gonna order the pair of MOX cables from NLFX when I place my par can order.

That should hold me over for a while. Until I can pick up some more of the 12/3 cords. The home improvement store are crazy. 50ft 12/3 cord is about $60. Monoprice is $22. Same SJVT casing too.

Aside from Ohm's Law there is no rule specifying what size cords a DJ company should use. Match your cords to the load at hand.

Two factors are important in selecting and using AC extension cords: Conductor size and length.

12 AWG is rated for 20 amps service. 14 AWG is rated for 15 amps service. Since copper is not a perfect conductor, voltage drop can occur over very long runs. To minimize voltage drop over long runs, use a larger size conductor. :)

Cool deal - but I wonder, if something should blow - does having him do you a favor on the side give you access to his liability insurance? I mean our little DJ liability insurance is nothing compared to what can happen in the event of an electrical fire.

Of course if you were hiring an outsider to build you something, he would have to warranty his work, and that would be your defense...

Speaking of....

I would like to get like 4: 6ft black electric cords to run to my lights? Where can I get them?

I have found other colors...just not black.

Ben at NLFX has a version that has inputs/AC connections along the length. There is a post on this site somewhere with pictures and very cool looking in black.
Can anyone find the link? Ben, can you repost with a pic?

I believe these are the kind that Ben sells.

This is why I simplify things by having the Client via the venue provide me with a hookup(s) where I will be setting up my gear. I give them the specs needed and they are supposed to do the rest. Liability is on them.

I run 12/3 for 50 foot runs on my amps for my Passive speakers, my powered speakers or my Intelligent lights.
I also have 4. 12/3 cords that are 25 foot and a lot of 8, 15, 25 foot cords that are 16/3 for short light things. I also have 2 cords that are 10/3 and 50 feet long that I don't use very often because they are very hard to roll back up.

You should try coiling 200' of 0000 cable. Now that is fun!

I would never ever use anything less than 12/3 (ie 14/3 or heaven forbid 16/3) SO cord. In fact the NEC requires all portable (ie temporary) rigs to use 12/3 SO cord with properly rated connectors.

Not that most people enforce the codes in these situations.

I will use short (8-15 foot) 16/3 if needed to go from the 12/3 to the 18/3 that came with my EV's.
One 12/3 will power 2 EV's

Also my 16/3's work great to for my laptop, ex hd, the crossover for the EV's, and some lights.

I Try not to be the one using/providing Extensions cords to my rig. I require this from the Venue/Client. If they screw up and an electrical fire happens, it will their monkey not mine.
My connection is a straight distrubition 12ga. 8 connection channel that I got from NASA. My Conditioner and distribution panels are powered from that chain.
When I visit a venue to determine my needs, I request that they be the one to supply such power/connection.

Not a good idea.
A fellow DJ tried that at a venue (telling them they needed to provide him with extension cords) He was later blacklisted by that venue & the venue spread the word about this DJ. The results were: he created a bad reputation as unprepared & unprofessional.

Thats really interesting.

Personally, other than space and power itself - I don't like relying on the venue for anything. That includes a table, gaffers tape, table skirts, aspirin, anything.

I would feel the same way.

You wouldn't be asked to provide tools and equipment for a contractor doing work on your house. And if you were you would feel they are unprepared and unprofessional.

All I need is a few outlets. I'll work from there.

Bill,
I have been in the business over 30 years now and not once have I been blacklisted. I usually get what I want because I deal with my client not the venue. Thats where most DJs make the mistake, they go dealing with the Venues/Banquet Mgrs etc and get pushed around. When I go to visit a venue it is on behalf of my client, I tell them what space I need and I usually get it without question.
In all fairness I must state that I usually pick a spot very close to an AC outlet so extension cords do not have to be used. I also carry my own but prefer to use theirs. Less gear for me to put away.

:sqerr: Would you bring your own stage too and circuit breaker?
