What software are you using to DJ with?

I do not even remember the name of the one I first started with (actually just found it; it was ClubDJPro). It did karaoke as well; but after about 20 karaoke songs it would crash. Then I moved to PCDJ for a while; but every now and then it would have a glitch. Moved to VDJ and it has only crashed on me maybe once. I also bought Rick's program and played around with it; but never used it at a gig. He was always fun to chat with.

The only DJ application I ever used professionally was Traktor, and it NEVER crashed... not even once. My computer locked up once, but it was my fault; not related to Traktor. I was running Traktor in VMWare, and accessing my music library through a shared drive on my host (laptop PC). I think it was VMWare that locked up. That’s the one and only time I used that laptop for an event, and the only time I used a virtual machine through VMWare. I think that configuration was a little too unstable back in 2012. Traktor is really rock solid, which I always appreciated.

So what did you use "unprofessionally" ? :)
I tried pretty much everything... Serato, PCDJ, DJay Pro, Mixxx, VDJ, and maybe some others. The software is fun to play with, and I like comparing features and functionality, but when it comes to actually performing with an application, Traktor is the most intuitive and natural choice for me. Now that I’m getting out of the business, I think I’ll be just fine using Mixxx as a hobbiest. I haven’t been able to crash the current beta version, but if I did, who cares?😊

I've been building a small music video library, so anything I move to needs to handle that. That was one issue I had with PCDJ .. just doesn't seem to handle video or external sound cards (USB) as stable as I'd like. DJay seems good, but only on Mac hardware .. doesn't do video on a PC. I think I will probably move to VDJ .. wish there was a holiday sale though .. $300 after I've bought most of the others ... :(

If you only plan to do video as a hobby the free version of VDJ does video as solid as anything else

I think the free version doesn't allow controller use. I have the limited version, which only works with the DJ2GO2 it came with.

Ahh yes I forgot about the controller use I don't use one. You could use home plus for $49 or $99 depending on controller but once that controller dies the license dies with it

At that point, might as well pay the lifetime cost up front ... just wish it was more in $ line with the other apps ...

These are the results of this years survey by Phil Morse. This does not show the extremely rapid year over year growth of Rekordbox - yet I don't think anyone here at ODJT uses it.
I use rekordbox exclusively for live gigs, not that i've done one since March 2020. Radio-wise i'm an OtsAV user and have been since 1999, fantastic software still..

Serato DJ and Rekordbox are now almost tied for #1, and it looks like Rekordbox's continuing rapid growth came at the expense of Traktor and VDJ.

"He who has the most Toys at the End, Wins". IMHO, we are witnessing the huge advantage Rekordbox has because of Poioneer Hardware. I think Serato's realized that their lack of a hardware partner is now starting to hurt them, witness the new Rane One Controller, and their tight inclusion of Phase in Serato DJ Pro V2.5 Beta, although I consider the latter a niche product. A lot of people learned the hard way "what not to do" from Traktor's jog-wheel-less fiasco, which IMHO history will put high on the Dumb List.

I wish they get legit numbers on the quantity of bootleg versions being used by those same individuals.

Interestingly, though, because Rekordbox ONLY works on Pioneer devices, they’re assuring there will continue to be other DJ software developers; at least a long as there are other DJ controller/mixer manufacturers. Even if I wanted to use Rekordbox, it won’t work with my Denon controllers. Strangely enough, it also does NOT work with my Pioneer controller (DDJ-T1).😊

I’m a little surprised VDJ has a smaller share than Traktor. When I first got my Denon MC6000MK2, I was having problems getting Traktor to work correctly. I installed VDJ and everything worked perfectly, right out of the box. The setup was pretty automatic. I eventually got Traktor working after a lot of research and trial-and-error.
