What if your wife pressured you to lower your price for one of her friends?

you can look at it from both sides Papa but its possible you can discuss it with the wife stating that its a one time deal for a friend and you wont do it again for anyone else(no more friends, maybe family, lol) if you want it that way.or it can be playing hard ass and saying its my way or the highway and have the wifes heart broken that her husband wont do her a favor(remember its not about the friend now).

i cant tell you what to do but look at it this way,it can be a one shot deal which potentially can lead to other friends asking for favors too which then you can always say NO,or it can be a plus where you get more business from the event.in life we win some and we lose some, its all about having a PEACEFUL life if you want it that way.i dont know the character of your wife but some wives get over it after a while, then again you have other wives who wont make you forget about something you made her mad about,so think about which you can live with.

it is not about whether you do this as a hobby, business, you pay taxes, etc, etc.its about doing something for the wife, thats the bottom line(forget about who it is that ask your wife,it has become doing it for your wife)

CMWAT, I can tell you this.... my wife would want me discounting ALL events for her friends, while at the same time NEVER wanting me to discount an event for people I don't know.

She once VOLUNTEERED my services for an event at her company without asking me... Her reasoning was that it was a Thursday afternoon event, and I wouldn't be doing anything at that time anyway...... then she said "Consider the exposure". ( I was just getting back in the business at that time )

Well, this "friend" is from her workplace, and that volunteered event was 3 years ago, and this is the FIRST time anybody contacted me for an event from that company.

it seems as though you havent set the boundaries in the past and so I renig and say you should keep the consistency and take the gig.

This is a "cause and effect", as far as I'm concerned. They think your services are worthless - or "cheap" at the least, and are getting upset that you won't work "cheap" (whatever the numbers are), to the point that they "went over your head" to your wife.

I'm very picky about who I discount or volunteer for, for this very reason.

Would ya?

I got a call from a friend of my wife's tonight for a 40th birthday party. The person who was supposed to get a DJ did not. Seeing as vacation is coming up, I am happy to have the extra cash.

I gave her a "slightly" discounted price. The woman's husband called me back and asked me to lower the price. I would not. About 15 minutes after I hung up I got a call from my wife asking me to lower the price for her friend. I said I probably would not, but would think about it.

My wife is a little upset that I didn't jump right to it and lower the price.... and I don't think I am going to.

WWYD?

Change your tagline from this:
"I only have one goal in my life, and that is to be a role model for my daughters."
to this:
"I only have two goals in my life; First to be a hero and best friend to my wife, and THEN by doing that I will be a role model for my daughters."

There's your answer. Money should never come between husband and wife. Give her what she wants.
i have been married 29 years and I finally realized that the first 29 years were all about me. Now I need to make the next 29 all about her!

I guess, but I dropped from $595 to $525.... they want to pay $450.... For "me", I'll pass on that for multiple reasons.

Well Papa Im afraid to say this but your wife apparently doesnt hold your business with the resp[ect you have for it. I would stand firm but who am I to say having the track record I have had and single at the present. However no one tells me to lower anything but myself. I wouldnt be sleeping on the couch It is my bed if someone is mad at me they can sleep elsewhere.

Everyone needs to read this post over and over and analyze this and apply it to your lives! Learn something from this man. He is wise. (not on this subject, but nonetheless)

Yep Steve, a hobby that I do pay my taxes on, but a hobby I wouldn't pursue if there wasn't enough money to make it worth my efforts. It is still a lot of work - for a hobby.

My original quote was about 15% off what I would charge for this event.

I'm less upset with my wife than I am with my wife's friend. She obviously called my wife back after I spoke with her husband to get my wife to get me to lower my price. My wife is one of those folks who will do anything for a friend.

BTW, the event is for this Friday night.

Obviously they are better friends than you and your wife are!

well in that case you need to put your foot down if you want it to stop.you need to sit her down and have a serious talk with her.all her friends and family cant get discounts,a line has to be drawn somewhere.i thought it was the first time around, never knew it was an ongoing discounted Papa.

I guess the question I have is what is the reason your wife wants you to cut them an even better deal....because she is a friend...would she feel the same way if the woman wanted to go to bed with you....cmon honey she is my friend....think we know the answer to that....this is business and you already cut them a deal. If they still balk just tell your wife its one more evening with you and the kids and no money can replace that.

May as well add a little manipulation to the marriage while you're at it!

Business is business plain and simple. Sometimes as business owners, we have to make unpopular decisions based upon what is best for our business, not what is better for a spouse's friend.

Papa, I'd say stick to your guns. The catch is once you do this who knows how many other friends will hear about the deal and try to get you to do the same.

The way I see it, this is not business advice he is asking for. (if he is even asking, after all it is a WWYD)
But it is a marital issue. I would say sometimes business owners have to make unpopular decisions base on what is best for our marriage!
but Mac is right in that it is not what is better for the friend.

Also, if a man is asking for financial council, he probably would not seek out someone who is bankrupt and cannot balance a checkbook. Same goes with marriage advice, he would not go to someone who has never been married, married many times, or divorced.

MAKE A CHANGE TODAY!
This is bigger than a 15% discount.

You know, what is it around here? How come when people ask "what would you do", and others answer, it becomes some kind of argument? WHO CARES if it's a hobby for him or not? I answered it with what I would do, which is what was asked, wasn't it? Here's a couple of ideas: 1) If you don't want opinions, don't ask for them. In the very same way, no one asked for opinions on why someone is single. Btw., since we're just "chat friends", do you even KNOW who is single, here?

Is your wife also your friend... maybe even a best friend?

Good point but opinions are like eyebrows...
Everyone has at least one!

I would have a hard time being happy with a "soulmate" or "best friend" who would sell me out for a "girlfriend".

If Chuck went this route, he'd be guilty of manipulation - how come trying to "haggle" your own husband over D.J. pricing isn't?

I think it was a favor. Not lying and manipulation.
It is the difference between the species. Male and Female.
I don't know all the differences but I know what applies to one does not apply to the other. It is always complicated when comparing a woman to a man. Always!
