Here's the thing. My friend called me yesterday and we talked. This guy is planning on having another big event in July at the Elks Lodge in Orange, NJ. The plan is to have four singers that are famous that everybody knows come in and perform. Along with a dance. My friend wants me to be the DJ to do it this time. It's a lot of work for that one day. You have to be there at 11am to setup and the performers will come in to rehearse what they are going to do. After that get dressed and wait for the start of the event. My friend doesn't feel like doing it this year. He just wants to observe.

Now the question is can I do it. Of course. The thing is will I do it. It would be great exposure. Now the setup to do this event has to be serious. At least 4 corded microphones and the 2 wireless microphones. As far as the gear we would use 2 subs, the 2 Yamaha DSR 115's tops and dual 15's to complete the setup for this event. Oh yes of course we would have to use the mixing board.

So my plan is if he does that party in the basement at Level 10 do that and then decide if I want to do the big event. Like I said me and my friend talked last night and he basically threw the gig in my lap. I thanked him for the compliment.
There is NO event with 4 famous singers that is going to hire YOU for $300 ... unless they're just East Orange famous.

You missed it big time. What you're talking about is for the event he is planning to do in July. So he will have 4 singers for that event. The one where he said he would pay me $300 is different. The other event will be more money than $300. 2 separate events.

I didn't mention what me and my friend talked about because I don't want to discuss his business with this guy online. That's between them. He just told me what happened because we're such good friends.

I am soooo confused ...
So a regular MIXY post. I will clarify. He is going to do one low paying job to get another low paying job because it will get him seen. He got this from another DJ friend who has decided he didnt want the job because he is a millionaire and doesn't need the work either. Not because it is a low paying job for long long hours.

Evidently, the job is more hassle than the $300 paycheck...
and there is a very good chance you won't get paid...at all.

Your "friend" is not complimenting you by giving you a job...
he is pawning the job off on you because he doesn't want it.

Don't forget the one of him and his partner.

...we could play on handball courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, tennis courts, courtyards, state courts, federal courts, supreme courts, volleyball courts, people's court, squash courts, badminton courts, homecoming courts...

There you go with your ego and idiot response again. Shut up until you know what you're talking about. Stop assuming things. You know what they say about assuming!

Mike this guy wants me to do the job to see me in action. He hasn't asked my friend at all if he even does the event.

You need to focus when you read.
As a warning to you...I gave you two very good reasons why you should be cautious about doing this gig.

You thought I was talking about something else...(your friend doing the gig?)
and COMPLETELY missed the point of my thread.

If you plan on making threads to get advice...
you need to stop trying to defend yourself,
and start paying attention to what people are trying to tell you.

Jimmy I have a question for you and please don't take it as a personal attack on you and what you do. What would be the price you charge for 5 hours to do this event he is possibly planning on doing an event in this small room in the basement of this club? I will show you something and like I said nothing against you.

If I was contacted for a 5 hour job on a Saturday night for Just DJ and no lights for a non wedding party my base price would be $1200.00. Also I would require a 25% deposit, a signed contract and payment in full two week prior.
Please Jimmy hear me out before you let your ego get in the way. Your price for an event like this is 4x times the amount this guy wants to pay. I'm not saying you're not worth it. So please don't take it personal what I say here.

This event if it happens will be in the basement and the room is super small. The capacity is probably no more than 70 people and that might be too crowded. He would be looking for people to pay to come to this party. Now the question is how much could he charge to be able to afford to pay you your price. Again like I said I'm not saying you aren't worth that price. I just know he could never afford to pay you that much. I understand you don't need a job that bad and wouldn't do it for the price he wants to pay.

Myself I was on the shelf all of 2018 due to my health. So I'm just getting back to where I can do events. Now in that room you can only fit 2 tops. No sub and there's no room for speaker stands. The event my friend did in that room cost $20 to attend. I paid it because I wanted to finally check that room out, take pictures and video for my friend. That's it.

Mix, this is why you will never get higher paying clients. I am not concerned with what he can make or what he is charging for people to get in. All I care about is my bottom line. If he cannot afford what I charge then I wish him luck and move on. If you do this job and say one person who is there wants to book you for a job and gets your number from this guy, the first thing he is going to do is tell them how much you charged them. At that point you are screwed because that is the price they are going to expect from you and the then they are going to try and low ball you from that price. You keep taking these low paying jobs thinking it will change things for you and guess what in all the years you have been on these forums nothing has changed. You still deal with the same stuff over and over again with the same problems.

It is a new year maybe now you should start listening to what everyone has told you to do and start implementing the changes we have told you to make. Stop focusing on things that do not matter and start fixing the things that do.

Perfect example. I did a party this year for the same group I have been doing for years. I charge them the same rate I did 5 years ago because of how much business they give me but they never reveal that price to anyone. From that job today alone I booked 3 jobs 2 graduation parties and one wedding all for well above my asking price after all the add ons. Why, simple because they went to a well run party were I provided great entertainment and yes had more then 10 people on a dance floor while playing a wide variety of music. This is not about ego it is about business and doing it the proper way.

When i was very young 16-20 I took those low paying jobs like you thinking it would help me and while it did get me some jobs it never got me well paying jobs. Finally someone took me under their wings and showed me how to do it right and I listened. You have been offered it many time but all you do is fight it because you are stuck in your ways and will not change. Until you check your ego you will never be anything more then a guy known for doing one type of music and low prices. Oh yeah and letting people walk all over you. These public park jobs you do that think get you so much exposure and I guess some type of fame. I wouldn't even start my car for the price they pay you.

Again this is not ego. This is the truth and I know you will pick out one line of this and tell me I dont understand but guess what i do. You are a very easy book to read. I have seen many DJs like you over the years and watched them all fail or live on scraps and I have seen others who listen and learn make millions doing this job. I and others on here will make more on our gigs in January then you will for the entire year hell maybe even two years but yet you still want to argue with us. It makes no sense.
