The Wedding DJ Saga (this actually applies to all DJs)

As much as I would love to meet all the hundred or so DJs that came up in my search, I have to find some way of narrowing it down.

The question of "what sets you apart" spun from the fact that I'll get a quote from a $900 DJ and an $1800 that both offer the same equipment and services - in the same area! There's gotta be at least one reason that one DJ is charging double the amount of the other DJ.

Yeah, he decided he was "worth more" and set his price higher.

Mike

To that end what question do you propose to ask to help you to differentiate between them?

This all depends on what each client is looking for (which helps to explain why there are so many different DJs).

For me personally, I want to know how and why they got into DJing. I also like to know what kind of music they like. For our specific wedding, will they accept our offer of being provided a meal. When we head out next month, are they willing to meet us more than once and are they willing to drive even 20 minutes to meet us.

The responses to these questions can reveal a lot about what the DJ is actually thinking as opposed to what they are saying. It's pretty easy for me to tell when someone is truly passionate about what they do just by hearing them respond to a couple of questions.

I want to know...what's the difference? I asked that to one of the $1800 DJs and he told me that he is not a DJ but an Entertainment Director, someone who coordinates the whole day for me. He told me that his is a "concierge service" and that he caters to a "higher caliber" customer. :sqconfused::sqmad:

In other words. Nothing. He just invents fancy names for himself so he can charge more. *lol*

Sounds like he has justified his cost... if he is going to take the control like a coordinator and the responsibilities that that entails then a call to references would be in order before meeting.

If your like me I say check references first because if you are like me you read product reviews before buying or even deciding on who to buy from... but, that's just me.

However, the comment of "higher caliber" customer's just reeks of GWYW sorry DJRox but it does. He's an elitist and would have no business doing my wedding... sorry. If that comment was left out... he'd still be in the running.

So give us some examples of what things you see on sites that have impressed you enough to call or at least email for more details?

What things have tugged at your purse 'er umm heart strings?

They mention professional-grade equipment. They have experience DJing weddings. If they mention a ballpark rate, it's not out of my range. They do not have a page that goes on with the whole ADJA schpiel about entertainment costs and why I should pay more for a DJ. (This article here and the one with that comparison graph) A lot of DJs that I've ended up calling had biographies up or did not use a whole bunch of stock photography...things that humanized them. There's probably a little more to it, but I like knowing that I'm calling a DJ who has a DJ business, not a businessman who happens to own a DJ business. If I get a good feeling from the site or if I have a question, I call; if it feels standardized and cold, I don't call. Most sites make the cut enough for me to call.

Ah yes, but experience is a double edged sword. We've talked to DJs who have been doing weddings for 20 years and they've pushed the "traditional" wedding at us which is not what we want. We've talked to guys who have 3 years experience who listen to what we want. In this specific case, the value of experience is less than the value of inexperience.

I don't think is was experience that was having the 20 year dj pushing "traditional" weddings, it was a poor salesperson pushing something you don't want.
An experienced SALES PERSON would know to ask what you are looking for and show you how they can provide what you are looking for.

To me, it's not the AMOUNT of experience that someone has, it's what they've learned from that experience(or other's experience) that is important. That's where the value is.

You are asking questions and worrying about things that have nothing to do with the job at hand all while not getting to anything important.. I understand your concern in hiring but honestly I would have a hard time taking you seriously if you called me

Ducky- I apologize for sounding harsh and take your "Chill" comment wholeheartedly, but that wasnt supposed to be the tone of the post, thats also why I added a smiley and a joke at the end.:sqwink:

Any -in a nutshell this also sums up what I was getting from your posts. A whole lot of a nothing.

I can talk for hours on end with a client, but if it is not answering any questions because the client is not asking it, then it is pointless.

Well just because curiosity is what killed the cat I'm gonna ask anyway...

If you were in my market and looked at my site would I be on the list or on the chopping block?

If I were getting hitched in your area, I would call you up for a quote.

I like what you have to say on your website and I like that there are pictures on there that don't appear to be stock photos. There's plenty there to pique my interest. :)

I'm obviously not going to hire a DJ if they use the Radio Shack special...give me more credit than that, please.

Sorry Ducky I confused you and Mac. He said

We understand that every DJ worth a dime has professional equipment,

That left me with the idea you assumed and not asked

Yeah, he decided he was "worth more" and set his price higher.

Mike
..and you know that, about this fictional/hypothetical character, because....

The saying that "When you assume you make an ass out of you AND me" is pure horse crap. Your assumptions don't involve anyone but YOU!

So you think those that charge less believe they are worth less? Wow, that is sad.

And I'd give ya a hellova deal for this area.... it's weird I to see a wildly swinging pendulum of price in my area.... starting around $300 and going as high as $1500..... and little to justify the prices.

Nope, but all things being equal (as the original poster said) then the only difference is one thinks he is worth more and one has set a reasonable price.

It is assumed that all professional DJ's will have great sound equipment, appropriate attire, and mood setting lighting. But it takes more than that to distinguish your individuality and uniqueness to the client.

Steve,

It's Addison Pfeiffer! Thank you sooo much for the amazing job you did at our wedding! Karissa and I are still on a high that you created for us! We couldn't have even imagined in our wildest dreams that our reception would have been that great! Everyone that we have talked to that was at the wedding said that it was the best time and best wedding that they have been to in a long time, and you def. had a major part in making that happen! I posted the you tube montage that you made on my myspace page, and will recommend you to the friends of ours that are getting married in the near future. We cannot thank you enough. You created a lasting memory for both of us!

Thank you for everything!!!

Steve, Thank You very much! The entertainment that Steve provided was great. He was very professional and accommodating with our requests and needs. He went above and beyond what was requested and provided extra services that we were not even are of. He took photos and posted them for printing on his site. He communicated with us and the wedding coordinator very well and was more prepared that even the bride and groom for the event.

I gotta chime in..

I did read and glanced at some of the responses. Ducky, right? First, when you call around, you're not saying your name is ducky, right?? Hope not.

If you are a DJ in my area, be honest. If you want respect, you have to earn it. Period.

I've never , ever had a DJ in my area to call me for their wedding..Just ain't happenin'...I probably will not be interested...

I'm going to treat you like every other female that calls. You ask questions, I've got the answers. Please do not call me and say *I'm calling for my girlfriend whom is gettig married* crap...I'll wait for her to call me...Pet peeve..

Why us?? Have you looked at our web site? I'll ask. Ton of info, bios, etc..

Prices on our site? I've dabbed with the idea. Not at this time. You ask, I'll tell ya.

Experience? 25 years and strong! Countless weddings. Are my prices firm? Pretty much, but always willing to talk about it.

Lights, props, games and contests?? Is this what YOU want??? You gotta tell me, my ESP is off today.

I strongly urge an in person meeting here in my office. I wanna see you, look at your expessions and see your experession when I hit ya with the price tag...

Priceless...

Next!!!!

That's Ducky!! :sqlaugh:
