So you want to learn SEO?

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
Yer missing the point... :)))))))) It's not about getting link juice out of it, but using it to rank high on the search engine results!!!! :) Which is how I initailly got a PR3 in the first place... by going after search terms that were not taken by other youtube users... :) So now I could actually do pretty much what I want with my videos and be one of the first that come out for my search terms... Buah ha ha ha ha!!! Most DJ websites are PR2 or below... I would say, easily over 80% of them... Time to educate my brides!!!

A website is the most powerful marketing tool there is today... IT would benefit you greatly if you take the time to try to understand SEO and to actually IMPLEMENT what you learn both here and anywhere else...

Like I said before, we are both running parallel paths... I'm a bit behind you in the sense that you already have video marketing in yours.. :(

It's funny cuz I targeted severla niche keywords with my blog and because of it and because it came up on the SERP for those keywords, I got a rush of traffic... :)

Yep!!!! agreed!!!

No Follow is OK - The value of the website is the most important thing.

I edit stuff for Wikipedia and a lot of their backlinks are no follow - the way I look at it is - cool at last people can find me there - the search engines sent someone there and I'm there

Dan knows I do a forum for my local pro Football Club (it's not called Soccer - America!!!! LOL) I hardly have any members yet but the traffic from Wikipedia is cool as is Facebook, Twitter, Flickr (no follow again), Friendfeed et al

Where I can "upgrade to a pro paid version" I do - it's a bit like voting with your wallet ;)

PR2 is way cool for a local DJ site.

I had one in California and managed a PR 3 by getting a few mentions around and putting some $$$s in certain places - believe me I was busy, then fell off that stage in San Francisco LOL

Be happy with PR 2

By the way guys it's all changing now and I know one Google server farm has changed the algos ;)

Stewart download the free Google Toolbar look at options and allow PR view.

I wouldn't worry about it though I have a couple of site with 0 PR yet top where I want it to be.

Differ Not at all really - it is merely a gauge of how worthy your site is on it's given topic.

The US, UK, Canada and Australia are seeing some almighty new algo roll outs from Google so everything is changing again

I had a beta version of Google Caffeine search and it was way cool - ;)

If Goog change all what I saw and I searched a lot there will be a major shift in rankings - bit like an Internet earthquake.

Got an old dusty website that loads too slow - bye bye ;)

Ok, I've just been through [most of] the thread here, and although I may have missed a few, I think I've got the general jist. What I will say with SEO is that content IS king, all you have to do is check my alexa.com rankings and see... And I credit that score almost entirely to my blog.

Yes, links count, and meta stuff still counts, and H1 tags and page titles, but at the end of the day, accurately tagged content rules all. Don't get caught in the SEO tar pit, and don't believe the hype. Before you do anything, read this post, and the subsequent post from Entrepreneur magazine.

DJs should be able to excel at SEO due to their gregarious and outgoing nature. It's all about communication.

Just read your post, and it's the truth. It is hard for companies/individuals to guarantee results with the SERPs. The algo's are changing, competition is changing, and patience is a virtue. If a firm say they can get you top 10 rankings in a month, I'd be weary. It is possible, but requires a lot of optimization.

Landing pages = content!!!!

In one of the books furnished by Dennis it says that you should have unique landing pages for the areas you work in. I literally took that as having a page for each major city/town/subdivision in which I do business. I even went as far as breaking it down to one for Mitzvahs, weddings, and general DJing in each of the cities/towns/subdivisions and it is working.

One idea I got from a friend is to do a page for each major venue I have worked as well. I just started them and I'll post on success later, but it can't hurt.

alexa.com isnt worth 2c - you get it when you install an operating system its spyware and basicly its crap

sorry but wouldnt trust alexa.com if you gave me $100,000

You can use all the tricks you want but sticking to the basics will get you there.

I brought my old site on a subdomain to number one on Google and MSN and top 10 on Yahoo, ask, and alta vista.

My new site is top 10 in all my key search terms in less than a month and it's not completed yet. Along with other bits of web presence I'm almost always the first one found.

You can have a great page rank but if you can't find the page it isn't much good

Alexa rankings? First time I've heard that in a few years...

Alexa rankings, per se, mean nothing my friend.

Years ago people (dodgy seo types) would fudge Alexa rankings by getting everyone to install the Alexa toolbar then searching for the client and clicking on them thus giving the "ripped off client" a spectacular lie.

Alexa is owned by Amazon and a useful research tool ;)

SEO - Here We Go

OK dudes! Lots of you know I've been doing seo and related since 1997 - yes before Google ;)

I have done OK but it is about to take back seat as I pursue two other nice little earners that I rank top - locally - for.

So I will be concentrating on those two earners knowing I'll be top of the serps where I want to be - in Plymouth my home city.

My Missus will be concentrating on the seo side of my world as she's learned what a piece of pi$$ it all is.

I'll be honest I don't see what all the fuss is about - it's an easy process buggered up in it's execution by people that want to be number one - sometimes it's a matter of a few $$$s to get to the top and dominate or a simple change in strategy that stops a site soaring...

I'm getting tired of it :)

Wavy Davy I just discovered my old site back from 1994
when I created a one pager that at that time was utter crap

but I was still found

read some SEO ebooks that I provided I bet even that will open your eyes

TommyO will tell you what he discovered in his post above
he still has lots to read yet and I have lots more here to give...

oh thats right you cant read!

Once again guys - SEO is a piece of pi$$ screwed up in it's execution

Keep it really simple, get a wordpress blog with a decent theme, don't spam, add an H1 tag above each blog post.

Add a Google XML sitemap, sod keywords, add tags

I just launched a new blog that went to number 5 after 2 days - new dom name and new site - No inbound links ;)

Number 5 Where? and for what?

That's the thing. People keep saying I'm number one, I'm in the top 5, etc, etc,. What matters is what search term are you using. You have to ask yourself: What would a potential client type into Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. if they were looking for a DJ like myself?

Anyone can claim to be #1 on Google if the search term used for that claim is (for example) 'DJ Wes in Memphis'. Of course I'm going to be #1. It has to be more generic like (for example) 'Memphis Wedding DJs'.

That is the key. I have built landing pages for DJ, Wedding DJ, Party DJ, and Mitzvah DJ for each of the major areas I work in. I have also built landing pages for some of my favorite venues. For example, I enjoy working at Swan Harbor Farms so if you were to type in Swan Harbor DJ or Swan harbor Farms DJ you would find me #2 on Google but if you use Swan Harbor Farms you find me on the third page; I have to work on that one.

Another good technique is to get a service that submits your site map on a regular basis. I use Attractica.

Tommy. I have to ask. Do you really think anyone is using 'Swan Harbor DJ' as a search term? It just doesn't make sense to me that someone would use that. YMMV.

The five minutes to build the page was justified. I think that if I do more word smithing on that page and maybe include it in other locations in the site maybe it will get higher recognition with Swan Harbor farms itself.

Now do I think they are looking for Swan harbor DJ? No. But my goal is to get it near the venue itself. Swan harbor is a popular wedding venue locally and it is just a short drive for me.

The overall goal with the venues is to be on the same page with them. When the prospective client searches for that venue hopefully my page, with the title of [Venue Name] DJ, will appear close to it and will trigger the thought, "Hey I need a DJ too and why not this guy?". I just got the pages for the venues up. I now need to word smith them more to get them near the venue.
