What bitrate were your mp3 files used in this test, and what ripper and codec were used?
I keep swearing that I'm done with this thread, yet here I am again.
I can't answer why something is being "pushed" until it is established that something IS being pushed. Joe, you keep insisting that mp3s are being pushed. Who is doing that, where, and how? Please be specific, I have missed it so far, and don't wish to continue missing it.
Other than your off-topic rant, and remarkably zealous insistence upon arguing things that also aren't part of the original question posed, I've seen people: offer advice about mp3 cd playback devices (my first post in this thread did so - squarely on topic), or (not as directly on topic) suggest that if you're going to use mp3s, why use discs at all?
Joe, when and how was the line crossed for you between answering a question, based on someone's personal experiences and preferences, and pushing something?
Brother Joe,
1) If it's any help, Shirl and I have had the pleasure of visiting with Rick in his home recently. Rick is a great guy and a great host. We felt right at home, just chatting about anything. You'd like Rick as soon as you met him, trust me on this one.
2) If bbs members promoting the PC or MP3 aspect irritate you, ignore it. You don't have to respond, ya know. People aren't gonna change just because you (or I) think they should.
Thoughts?

Apparently, as in Cesar's case, it's not the post, but the squeaky response that gets the grease. By stating the case for MY use of discs and players, I have irritated those who prefer other methods.
I'm just tired of people who won't think or use common sense. SCOTT, Apologies to you up front. These comments are not directed specifically at you, it's just vent time.Folks, if you love your PC, and you love your MP3s, God bless you, enjoy, and be happy. But please stop making things up. Those of us who are trained, educated, and do our own research KNOW it's baloney.
You may not want to do the electronic testing, but you ARE on this forum, so I ASSUME that you read the posts. That means you MUST be aware of all the PC problems and costs. You DO read the posts, right?
I'm sure I'll catch it for this post, but honestly, I'm tired of being politically correct in the face of just plain dumb... WAKE UP! THINK! ON YOUR OWN! COMMON SENSE! READ THE POSTS!

Steve, you get a thank you and more. First, though, a "push" s anyone trying to convince people ANYTHING is "better" without the facts to prove it.
IN ADDITION: It seems that whenever someone anything to the effect of " I'm a disc based DJ, and here's my question" someone always seems to pop on with something like "Well, if you were to switch to PC, or were PC, blah, blah"...hey no one ASKED about PCs. They asked a question pertaining to THEIR sytem. Happening a lot lately. That's a push, and it usually ends up in a thread hijack as well.
Well, I don't know if responding is worthwhile, since you think all people from New Jersey are liars, but what the hell, I like adding insult to injury.
Although I DID beat the PC people in the speed loading contest, I also came in third overall to two other disc based guys. The PC came in FOURTH. The fact is, while none of us may have beaten YOU, Rick, the average KJ/DJ is not a computer geek, and doesn't spend his/her life on a keyboard. They are people with other priorities..so may not be as speedy as one who lives through a PC. You are not a DJ/KJ, but a software writer/seller. Therefore, YOU may well be faster, and it also well behooves you to push PC shows.
One more thing. If you do decide to start interacting with people again, you may wish to work on your social skills. Calling me a liar without having any facts is not conducive to warm fuzzy feelings...
Oh yes:
"I couldn't care less whether Joe the Plumber, can tell the difference between a CD and an MP3" - Sorry to hear that. I care. The payback is my success in this business.....
Not at all Joe
You may have irritated with this post on the 20th though...
1) If you re-read that, you will note that other than Scott, you think the rest of us are a bunch of ill-trained, un-edumacated folks, who have no possible business being in this business, and unless we have an EE, and have invented a new electronic flushing toilet or something -- we must be a bunch of morons with no common sense!
If you call a bunch of folks morons to their face, I suspect you will hear about it, in one way, shape or form
2) And just to clarify -- I pick on everybody from Joisey, it's a natural thing for a New Yorker, much the same as busting on people from Massachusetts (in particular, Boston). But at least, they have a real baseball team, and not just little league on the landfill...![]()

Someone's personal experiences don't require being facts to have validity. This includes yours, Joe, even when they might differ from mine.
I'm in full agreement with you, on this, Joe. If someone asks a specific question, and gets a retort of how they're doing it "wrong", and how they "should" do it, highjacks the original question, and usually just ego and BS, IMO. In my first post in this thread, I wanted to discuss how I think Ducky (and your) work would be easier if you were computer-based, but from what I understand about Anna (Ducky), and you, you prefer discs, so I limited my original reply in this thread to what I know about mp3 discs.
My belief is: if you're going to go BEYOND the scope of the original question, you should at least answer the original question first.

Just curiously what was your time. I am not a DJ, I don't even play one on TV (and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night). I am not an audiophile computer geek either. I am curious if I could beat your time on my media player.
Mike
From what I can gather, the PC medium is the way of the future in this biz. And with HDDs as huge as they are today, one may use WAV files instead of MP3s.
Thoughts?

Okay I have to step in now. Joe how many discsdid you work with for this competition? Were all of your librarys the same? using the same library software and location (aka like cases or books)??
Gonna have to do a Cesar here, and I'm sorry. The event was based strictly on who finished correctly first. The only "time" I got was when another Host starting screwing with a watch, and timed my disc and rotation change at under 3 seconds. This was a random element added by the judges. I can't even swear that time was right- it was only what I was told afterward.
One thing to remember is that I came in THIRD, so I'm not that great a speed demon anyway. The guy who came in first was freakin' AWESOME. Not only were his hands a blur, I don't think he even used his mind- just muscle memory got him the discs he needed. WAY faster than me. #2 was somewhat closer to my speed.
I don't know if it makes any difference at all in general( I can't think of any reason it would), but this was an all Karaoke Host contest. If anyone thinks that would make a difference, I wouldn't argue, but would like to know how. I will be the first to admit that in MY case, it would, as I don't have my DJ collection half as well memorized as my Karaoke discs (more usage).
I just wonder how it is physically possible for someone to:
1. Look up a song in a book to find which CD it is on (although you MIGHT get to skip this step if it is a popular enough song that you already know which CD it is on, but unless you are a cookie cutter DJ this isn't the case most of the time) and which track it is on that CD
2. Physically find the case
3. Open the case
4. Take the CD out
5. Open the player
6. Take the CD in there out
7. Put the new CD in
8. Cue up the track
9. Push play
10. Allow the CD to spin up and start playing
In the same amount of time it takes to:
1. Type in three or four letters
2. Double click a track
I just don't see how A can physically be done (no matter the skill level of hte DJ) than B.
Mike
I turn around to my already open CD case, pull out the CD (I typically know exactly where it is), open the CD and as the CD is going in, I set the track number. I turn on the cue for the headphones and I get the song cued up.
As I've mentioned before, I passed a test in college where I was given the previous 2 songs. A song was cued with 30 seconds and when they hit play, I had to figure out the next song, pull it, cue it, and complete a suitable crossfade. After that 30 seconds of fun was finished, I had to explain my reasoning for picking the song that I played.
DJing is a little more than typing and double-clicking or even pulling a CD and pressing play.
