MP3 CDs

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
In regards to CD players displaying track info:

The CD has to have CD Text (data track), in order for a CD player that reads CD Text, to display it. I have one -- doesn't get much use though :sqcool:

Software on the other hand, generally looks it up on the internet, via GraceNote or FreeDB, using a unique disc ID, that is calculated by the program on insertion of the CD.


On my software, when you put a CD in, it will look it up on FreeDB -- when you load an MP3 or WAV into a deck, it will look it up on Amazon, so it can retrieve the album cover art, and display it. That of course, requires an internet connection of some sort.

Some software will read CD text as well, although it is generally of little use on a computer, IMHO, since playing an audio CD on a computer has far too much latency... YMMV

Yeah, if I were going to use CD's I would stay with a CD player. Doesn't make sense to use a CD in a computer.

Rigged? How? Rigged against PC users? Please clarify. I can tell you that NONE of the participants felt that way.

If the CD DJs were allowed to have CDs out and lined up (as I understand it), while the PC users had to search for the songs (again, as I understand it), then that gives the CD DJ an unfair advantage. Hence the contest is rigged.

I beg to differ. In every industry even mine there are nuances that comes with the gig. The fact that you do these things without thinking (automatically, muscle memory, instinct, whatever you want to call it) doesn't mean they don't have to be done.

Correct. But if you don't have to think about it, the time involved is negligible.

If one of my singers asks for the SuperCore version of Desperado, it's on the felt before they finish the sentence. A one finger flip from the 8th pocket on the first holder of book 2, track 1. Muscle memory and knowledge equal speed. If you're running a light board, and have been doing it for years, do you have to look for everthing on it for each adjustment?

Like I said, you DIDN'T read the description. The constestants were given a list at the same time. Then a timed start. PC people had to enter the list in order, CD people had to pull in order. NO ONE had anything laid out FIRST.

As PC people were entering CD people were pulling. If anything, this means, by YOUR standards, the PC people had an advantage ( which, apparently, they didn't).
 
Whenever I get the ranch in shape, and have the SJ Woodstock -- we will have to do one of those speed tests...

I've got my money on the PC folks :)


We'll make it more interesting though:

For each track called out, the losers have to chug a beer -- sorta like beer pong :sqbiggrin:

Only if it's shots of Stoli or Green Chartreuse. I don't drink anything that looks the same going in as coming out....:sqerr:
 
MP3 CDs are handy for boxed set collections so that you can bring one disc of a whole box instead of the whole boxed set itself. If any of you have Phil Spector's Back To Mono box, you should bring an MP3 disc of the whole box instead of the box.

Wow, those must have been some SLOOOOWWWWW PC DJs.

Anyway, I would just like to see a time. You figure what, 10 seconds to pull and cue a CD versus 4 seconds to find and cue a file from a PC?

If you guys didn't live a billion miles away, I'd go head to head with Joe, and have a blast, even if I lost (which I wouldn't).

Good point. Just to throw everyone out of whack, when doing straight DJ work, I will sometimes use my own set of MP3 discs, which I grouped by genre. Surprise! :sqbiggrin:

Unbelievable.... The START was timed- as in "Ready, Set, Go" ....

I don't know about how long, but why would I figure that a CD pull takes longer than a PC cue if , at least in this case, CD pullers were faster? Whew!

Like I said- unbelievable.... Am I allowed to retract my invite? :sqlaugh:

...and that's why WE did it! Bragging and Breaking Horns rights! No one took it seriously ( except maybe for the guy who forgot to hook up his cables- he was PI**ED!) But if Rick or The Joker show up, I want a head start.....:sqwink:


You know what would be even more fun, and funnier? SWITCHING mediums! PC people who never ran hard media, and CD people who don't do PCs. Ya start seeing some 20 minute song pulls? That would be an incredibly fun day!

WHAT? how could you possibly charge anybody while forcing them to listen to low quality mp3's:sqwink:

you should be paying them.

seriously though, to me, that would suggest that you really don't have a huge problem with mp3 quality, but just aren't' comfortable with computers enough to use them at a gig, which is ok.

Awwww... Why? Because I disagree with you?

I am just saying I do not equate the CD DJ's in this specific contest being fast than the PC DJs with using CDs being as fast or faster than using a PC. There are many other ways to interpret the contest. The most likely of which being that the PC DJ was of significantly less skill than the CD DJs.
