Bar & Club How Would You Have Reacted

Houston, Chuck, anyone else,

If you are giving something away, time, valuable knowledge, effort, without direct, immediate, or clearly assignable compensation, you have rendered it worthless. I wholeheartedly agree.

I was, very early in my dj exploits, victim of my own overzealous, uninformed, inexperienced willingness to give away something now for the prospect of something valuable in the future, ie, I'll configure/design and install/set up your gear, even find the best sources and perform for little or no compensation so that when the place blows up, I'll be in, right? Been there and done that too!

Well, that kinda, sorta, paid off once, in twenty years and dozens of attempts. Unfortunately, for me, it was early on in the process, actually on the second attempt, so I was cursed with having had a high risk-low pay back success. Not since have such short sighted investments paid off and the balance sheet, from the various failed attempts with that practice, is so unbalanced that I suspect there are not enough red markers in Marks-a-lots inventory to color the complete sheet.

Chuck's practice of treating club gigs with the same sense of responsibility for contingency as private, mobile jobs may be beneficial in his experience, but not mine. That is his prerogative, its a free country!

That is not to say clubs deserve unprofessional, unethical treatment, but certainly different in many aspects. Show up on time, keep the music current and effective, behaving in an ethical manner, provide the best possible performance, improving your skills, treating patrons with politeness, the stuff you expect any employee should not have to be told more than once to do. Right on the money my friend. Thats the way I see it too.

Hauling back up equipment falls substantially outside the scope of a club dj's responsibility and duties. Except for what you have agreed to provide, such as your own laptop etc.

Why would anyone provide back up equipment and expose their gear to normal wear and potential, eventual damage, not to mention the additional liability, at club gigs where it neither expected nor compensated for? That is not smart bid-niz. No comment on that one! I do not want to be shot! :sqlaugh:

My responses are above in "RED". BTW The smiley up there is also mine. It looks like this :sqlaugh:

Now there is a shocker...NOT!

Houston, I reiterate, "Run, Forrest, Run!!!!"

Rox he owes me nothing after Sat and I owe him nothing. He did not give me enough to go through the end of month, which was my package deal. What he paid so far will be used up by this Saturday. If he pays the balance of the package deal I will continue past Saturday.

well I hope he doesnt pay you past Saturday cuase he would be sucking you into his idiocracy further.

Karaoke or dance club shows?

Mostly Karaoke, with maybe 30 dance club, if that. I sub for a DJ buddy when he has a band gig. Still have to make sure everything's up to snuff either way. Most of the straight DJ and mixed DJ/Karaoke work I do is for private events. What prompts the question?

Ok, it was the owner's fault.........sigh.....

Yer want a drink Joe? I got some Rum, beer, wine, vodka. moonshine....pick yer poison. Bar is now open! :sqlaugh:

I think I know why he asked but I may be wrong. Karaoke DJs usually bring/have their own sound equipment. I did Karaoke in my last two clubs (Not this one currently being discussed) and used their whole house system though. Awesome! Small bars/clubs...yes I carry my own.

Forgive me for not also mentioning the sun rose this morning.:sqwink:

Somethings should be understood.

If so many things are understood, why do you feel the need to list them?

In the big picture, I don't believe that two wrong make a right. Did the club owner make some really lame mistakes? Sounds like it to me. Did our friend houston make mistakes? In my opinion, yes.

I'm trying to avoid delivering opinion unless it's been asked for. I believe I have verified that in this thread, it has been.

Joe,

Karaoke is yet another horse of yet another different color. Houston's circumstance did not involve karaoke responsibilities or equipment expectations or compensation.

And on that we shall have to agree to disagree.

I think we all need to make a trip to the Paintball Field. Rox, Steve, Chuck, Joe and I. Maybe we'll drag Jon along too. Red Paintballs are mine! Y'all can choose other colors!

How could you as a professional DJ have done a gig under those conditions? Would you have driven a race car with leaky brakes and loose equipment in the motor? work with what you've got and make it happen
OK here is the bigger picture. I have been dealing with Mobile DJ and Clubs etc long before some of you were even sperm. (No offense) none taken i started in the bar scene 21 years my friend, dealt with many ****ty systems and at the time worked with many great systems (even pyle). If you give those Club owners an inch not giving away anything, like i said play the night - get paid, help owner understand, fix and get paid, win win situation in the long run!! they want to take a yard. Why should the monkey be on my back? because you want to help make it a better situation that can better your business We call out our fellow jocks when we find them unprepared with crappy equipment none out there just crappy djs . Why are we letting Club Owners off the hook? by not doing anything you are letting them off the hook Its their responsibility to have quality equipment we all know they don't give a flying rats ass for their patrons who are pissed drunk and don't really give 2 ****s about quality sound, just want to thump at the bar, pick up and then thump at home with what they dragged . I was expecting BIG ISSUE HERE to go and just plug in my headphones/mike, laptop and hard drive and be ready to rock in 15 mins. (I do not carry sound equipment to clubs for Club fees) I got there at 8.00pm, early enough to make minor changes. The owner was out at the store getting supplies, I called him to discuss what I had seen. When he came back at 8.30pm, I sensed an attitude. He started accusing me of making him buy equipment he did not need (Mind you, not replacements but equipment he did not have, a mixer and EQ, this was for NYE last December). I don't know about you but I don't take crap from nobody, period! What lesson would he have learned if had tried to fix things. I spent 3 hours there yesterday and still have to go back today to finish off. most of the rest of this post is useless other than I hope you charge him an additional rate for your professional opinion There was not enough time on Saturday and I had no tools then to do the repairs/fixes. Why stick around and waste time? Believe me, he is going to do it again. I can see him trying to plug in every single speaker someone gives him into that poor Pyle Amplifier back in the day when I was a distributor for pyle I would push them to the limits on what they can do 8 speaker cabs from subs, dual 15s (pyle), 15 2 ways (Pyle) and 12 two way (also Pyle) daisy chained and let them run the entire weekend with NO Issues. I know that I am not going to be the one to do it. I am a DJ and not a licensed Electrician or Engineer. I don't like messing around in other peoples trades and industries just like I don't like others messing around in mine.

Suck up the pride and do the job at hand, lend a hand and help a guy out by educating, configuring, pointing them is the right way if you personally don't want to do it. There are many companies that will love to assist in presenting a better sound solution. I made a killing in DJing bars. the majority of my income came from selling them what the need to be the best sounding bar in town.

Please take my opinions with a grain of salt as I truly believe that we are put on this earth to help. That's what I do.

EK, Its apparent that there may a lack of comprehension on your part. If a person is a cheapskate and does not put a priority on the tools for his business, meaning a decent sound system for his club, how in the world do you expect him to call in qualified help for a fee? His system is now working as best as it could, thanks to me. His big azz speakers have blown mid and hi end speakers in them. I guarantee that he is not going to get it repaired until the noise (sound) ceases to emit from the low end. Have you taken a look at the pictures of the equipment and the shoddy and unsafe wiring? Maybe not! See for yourself http://www.ourdjtalk.com/album.php?albumid=37 How could one squeeze over 4 hours (What it actually took) of repair time into half an hour (Time available that Saturday night)? By his actions, he DOES NOT want to have the best sounding system because it is not his priority. If you went over to that club right now and gave him a beat up Radio Shack receiver (Not amp) and two battered speakers, he will try to hook it up. That is the mentality of the individual. Wanna see what a good system looks like? Click here(This was from a previous club where I worked where the mentality was the opposite. (Not shown 4 JBL mains and 4 JBL 18" subwoofers were the speakers on the dance floor.)

Some people are beyond help. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink! Ever heard that phrase?

Would have done the gig, and advised that (for a fee) to come in and properly configure the system during off peak hours.

That is like reporting to work as a cabbie. You are given a cab with faulty brakes, one headlamp working, the ignition is hand wired, it has bad tires and no spare tire. So you say "No problem Boss, I'll drive it and tomorrow when I am off, I'll come back and fix it for you". Good luck! Apparently your life is not a priority to you!
