Bar & Club How much?!?!

To many ads? Support ODJT and see no ads!
djrox as usual you have missed the point all together....

You can't even book bar gigs in my area for much more and you'd have to lug ALL of your expensive gear, legal library, etc.

and still get paid marginally better.....

If you already own your library then for this gig there is no extraordinary expenses involved.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

If you feel inferior, that has nothing to do with others.

The music theives are no different than software theives, care to debate that Rickster?

I'll debate anything you like Rox... :)

My point was clear - no LOL ;)

You despise some of us, blast our morals (or lack thereof), yet swim in the same cesspool with us. It is hypocritical (or, as I like to call it -- a Roxymoron).

Shouldn't you be in church or something now, instead of hangin' with the turds in the cesspool...? (now here's a real LOL) :sqlaugh:  :sqlaugh:

Who said this bar gig was asking for music theives and or software thieives...

I believe it was a pretty straight forward job offer:

Bring your own music and laptop (nothing in there about stealling music or software)

Plug into our system (huh, no need to lug all my equipment)

Insurance? No need you don't have anything in there that belongs to you that could hurt someone unless you drop your laptop on someones toe.... so no need for that and it doesn't even figure into the equation.

Nope no real money loss here... I see nothing but gain in this case.

What could possibly be the point of defending that offer?

Regardless, I apologize. You know best what you are worth. I say expose your lappy to wear and tear, spend whatever it costs to travel to and from the gig, and enjoy or suffer, whichever comes first, the association of such a lucrative and reputation building gig.

P.S. "as usual," those damning words are so cutting and witty I may never again be able to look directly into a mirror. Thanks!

Well, keep prostrating yourselves for whatever stale crumbs they offer and watch it never get any better...and your vantage point will remain equally as dismal.

If you already own your library then for this gig there is no extraordinary expenses involved.
So it is valueless because you have already, allegedly, purchased it? Hmm, OK, ifin you say so.

You despise some of us
Presumptive and incorrect.

Maybe I despise allovya? :sqlaugh::sqwink: (Other than Tuck and a few others, I don't have enough personal interaction to even judge or care about judging anyone else in this group. HITF could I despise a man without knowledge or information? What do you think I am, a liberal?)

you blast our morals (or lack thereof),
Specifics, sir, otherwise its pure hyperbole and smells of cesspool filler.

yet swim in the same cesspool with us.
Nice reference to ODJT. I never considered this forum a cesspool, but you swim where you feel comfortable. Just don't open you eyes or mouth under the surface, unless you need to refuel.

It is hypocritical (or, as I like to call it -- a Roxymoron).
Nice play on words, incorrect, illogical, and ignorant but humorous.

Shouldn't you be in church or something now,
If you knew how ridiculous that statement is, you'd have typed something way better.

Ethics and honor do not require a church. Some churches can help people find them, but it is not a requirement, at least not for this turd.

instead of hangin' with the turds in the cesspool...? (now here's a real LOL) :sqlaugh:  :sqlaugh:
Again, I never considered this forum a cesspool. The reference was to the "$hitty" gig pool. If you seek work from the cesspool, of underpaying gigs, of which there is an endless supply just like human waste, you will likely be working for "crappy" people, turds.

Amazing how YOU assumed ODJT was the cesspool and others members were turds. I guess when your main companions are smelly goats, you have a different gauge than most.

In case you missed it, the turd reference was directly in response to the "sometimes they don't pay" statement.

I think I've been gone a while...

ODJT is heated!

Not really Jeremiah -- just all the holy rollers found us, and decided to edumacate us... :sqlaugh: :sqwink:

That's what happens when a DJ site gets popular, I've found. All the little rascals that like to make money off everybody else's hard work, soon show up at the door with their hands out, and their moral flags at full staff.

Heck, I make my living off DJs -- but at least I'm honest about it :)

Roxster, you are a humorous guy -- I'll give ya that :)

The folks here are my friends (read that twice, or maybe 3 times). Some are also my customers.

Some of us, both now and prior, have had to do, what we have had to do, in order to put food on the table. Apparently, you have never had that problem.

I applaud you for your interesting morals, and yer ability to have never been in a situation where yer friends or family need to eat <yea>

But, that does not mean you are getting an invite to the farm... ;) :)

Yeah, some of us would rather starve than lick up crumbs while they demand four course meals where none exist.

Me? I will gladly lick up crumbs, I will also sit at the table and eat eight course meals, whatever it takes not to have an empty stomach.

Then again I place myself at the service of others, and consider them better than myself (I try to at any rate).

In more practical terms I do a two night church gig every week. $75 for 4 hours. So, $150 a week. The only equipment I use is a headset and my laptop. So $150 for essentially nothing. That is $600 a month. $7200 a year (minus taxes) of free income. My insurance/equipment costs are paid by my other gigs ($3500 for 75 hours is my usual going rate) plus installs ($10k for two weeks worth of work). Now look, the $75/4 hour gig is a little under $20 an hour. But my other gigs only run about twice that much and require at least twice as much work. Keep in mind I also do some gigs where I only get $500 for a week and even some gigs that I do for free.

The point of all this is that I get $20-$40 an hour to have fun! It isn't even work for me. I love it! My fiance gets $14 an hour for her "real" job. I am so thankful for my $75 gigs every week. I am thankful for my $10k installs. Whatever it takes to keep food on the table.

Then again my worth does not come from my job or from what I get paid. Because those things change in value (no one exists in a vacuum, everyone's business is decided by supply and demand), but my worth to my savior is always priceless.

Mike

Thanks but I it had 'fore you gave it!:sqwink:

OK, now it is clearer.

Not because of some closely guarded secret or special ability, but mostly because my interesting morals have lead me to hard work, ethical fundamentals, and reponsible behavior. I have never smoked or drank or gambled or adultered or chemicaly risked my family's or my own safety and happiness. You know what, it was not really ever that difficult and the reward are certainly more long lasting and valuable.

I applaud you for your interesting morals, and yer ability to have never been in a situation where yer friends or family need to eat
Like I said, interesting morals can be beneficial.

P.S. Do not forget that it was YOU who injected "church" and "moral" into the discussion.

Here's another take: You're a college kid; you BUY all the newest tunes from iTunes, Wally-world, whatever; you'd be at the bar ANYWAY; and now someone wants to PAY YOU $75.00 to hang out, play music, and talk to the pretty girls...

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig for someone... Is it really taking money away from any of us??

Just saying... Your "No way I'd do that gig" is someone else's "Hey, I'm gonna get paid to hit on the hotties!" :sqcool:
Thanks, Zac.

If I was a pup in college I'd hope there were easier and safer ways to get my paws on seventy-five bucks. :)

In these economic times a week day gig like this where all ya have to do is lug in a laptop and hook up... seems like gold to me... considering gigs where you have to lug all your equipment for say a karaoke gig is not much higher up the pay scale around my part of the woods. Best pay around here for that would be $175.00 and you have to bring your own.
Thanks, Rob.

Maybe I've been blessed... my "real" job pays $22.00 per hour and there's another hike to come. Plus, I work 2nd shift. Now why on earth would I take a night off work to stand in a bar half the night for $75.00?

Folks, I ain't takin' sides here... just tryin' to point out some thoughts. There are a couple of aspects to this bar gig ad that shout Bad News:

Firstly, if the bar owner thinks a DJ ain't no better than $75.00, he's gonna treat a DJ that way. The way people see you is the way they'll treat you. 5 1/2 hours of being treated like a $75.00 DJ ain't my idea of doing business, sorry. If I needed 75 bucks that badly I'd be out knocking doors, offering to do handyman work. Heck, I can replace a flourescent ballast in a store and get $75.00. That's just half an hour's work.

Secondly, what does $75.00 truly buy these days? I can't recall when my grocery bill was under $170.00.

All I'm sayin'... there are better, easier and safer ways to make money. 5 1/2 hours work for $75.00 isn't one of them. :)

Joe: Why would your companies rep. be at risk... for this gig would you really have to say what company you own?

.

First, I'm actually more worried that it's this Tiffany's venue. Gotta find out about that.

Rob, I guess you wouldn't have to. The thing is, if it's within his work radius, potential clients AND patrons at other bars may see him there. Let's say he handed out some cards locally, and some people DO see him there, and the sound is bad. I believe he may take the rap for it and possibly LOSE business. Also, if the sound is bad, he won't get referrals. Half the reason for working bars is all the free advertising that they PAY you to get. Not much good if it's negative.

Again, the sound may well be fantastic- I'm just saying that if it isn't...

Also. and this is just me personally, if I have to hide my identity at a place where I'm doing what my company DOES, I think I'd rather pass..

Firstly, if the bar owner thinks a DJ ain't no better than $75.00, he's gonna treat a DJ that way. :)

On the other hand he probably only pays the bouncer and bartender 8 bucks an hour

I do both bar venues and events. Maybe 35-50 events in a year, and over 250 bar shows. been doing it for years and have YET to be burned for money in a bar.

That doesn't mean it hasn't been tried - only once or twice- but I always got paid, and the people were usually pretty respectful- maybe because of the income that I brought in- I don't know.
:sqerr:

Did you threaten them with a round house kick to the teeth if they didn't pay Joe???:sqlaugh::sqlaugh:

If someone is making nothing, I do understand the logic behind getting something rather than nothing.
I stopped doing bars a few years ago because of the pay , and I was working late nights, which ruined the next day and I was putting my equipment at risk.

Once I started marketing myself, I was able to book gigs at a decent price, buy better equipment and offer an overall better product. To clarify, I am not the most expensive DJ in my area. But I'm not the cheapest, either.

I do not look down on anyone that feels they need to work for that kind of money. Everyone has their own needs and commitments. If I needed to feed my family, I am not above doing anything. I do believe, however, that talented djs can make more money, even in today's turbulent times. If you need more bar gigs, go meet some bar owners and market yourself.

When you add up all of your expenses, and divide them among all of your shows, you are not making $13.63 an hour, probably not even close.
Some will say, "I have all of my expenses regardless, so this is all extra". While that is true, why work for the least amount of money when you can make more?

I am also not trying to put down people that do bars. Some djs do very well and make very good money doing bars. If and when I need to do more bar gigs, I would probably ask people here like Joe, Cam, and others for their expertise.

Now, the fact is the bar owner WILL find someone to take that gig. I don't doubt that. I do not post this in hopes that all djs will raise their prices so I can raise mine. There will always be plenty of djs willing to work for the lowest price. Heck, some would probably work for less. Like someone said, just bring a laptop, plug it in, and talk to chicks. Sounds great.

it just doesn't have to be you.

I am not putting down anyone that does bars, is full time, is part time or whatever. I don't care. I'm just saying that whatever you are going to do, do it well and make it worth your while.

TO CLARIFY FURTHER, I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT IF YOU NEED THE MONEY, YOU SHOULD SNUBB YOUR NOSE AT IT AND SIT BACK AND HAVE A DRINK. I AM SUGGESTING THAT IF YOU NEED THE MONEY, GET BETTER AND CHARGE AT LEAST A LITTLE MORE THAT THE EQUIPMENT WOULD COST TO RENT.

5 Hour bar gig should be at least $150... Around here it we get $250 to $400 for club... I was doing a bar for $200 on a Tuesday night for 4 hours

Arent you lucky...Around here it's $50.00/ night and some of these guys are going 6 hours for it. Thier gear your music

So it is valueless because you have already, allegedly, purchased it? Hmm, OK, ifin you say so.

It's not valueless but it doesn't lose value regardless if you use it or not. So you have a buck or two wear and tear on the Laptop and another 5 in Gas the odds are the DJ is still the highest payed person in the bar.

When you work a bar job it's just that a JOB it's not a business. You are at the mercy of what that owner feels you are worth and if you don't agree then you don't get the work. If you like what is offered you take it if you don't then you move on to bigger and better things

What got me was I worked bars in College - and made $100/night 10 years ago. I have no desire to work that late anymore and couldn't image making less than I did in college for more work - I thought bars here in PA closed at 2 am - not 3:30 am.

Wolfie is right - if I was 21 again, sure as hell I'd do it. But then again, I was a stupid 21 year old.

Goofy as it seems, The Goddess says it's my eyes. I always put forth in a gentle way, and ugly though I may be, at 5' 8" ( but not small at around 182 - fought at 172) I'm not seeing myself as scary looking. However, the Goddess says my eyes do something "terrifying" when I get bent, even if I'm smiling.....

Actually, I think it's more my "don't give a s*** attitude. You don't want to give a moneymaker pay problems. My answer is " You will pay me what you owe me for tonight, and we're done." Then I stand there, look, and wait... Come to think of it, maybe it IS my eyes...:sqlaugh::sqerr:
