Believe it or not Peter if after taking out the taxes and all its more than the part time job, thats why I would be even. Also we dont take into consideration the events and side shows that I do during the week. I understand what you are saying Peter about "a professional wage" but it is an acceptable salary that allows me to live and do what I love doing. It works for "now". Money isnt everything if you arnt happy with what you are doing. I think we can agree to disagree for now. Thanks

So is a professional fee also linked to the lifesyle you live. Is $5000 an event a professionnal fee for someone that lives in So Cal in a $500,000.00 house and drives a $70,000.00 car. $850 an event sounds like a professional fee if one is doing 90 events a year...Mine you one might be living in a mini/mobile home, driving a 10 year old car....does that make that personal less professional then you?...

If Dogman says that 45 events at $850 supports him, who are you (or we for that matter) to say otherwise?

I came from the "ghetto" as did Peter and all the other FTs at one time or another. I don't visit that neighborhood because one of the rules of success is that you seek out those who have what it is that you are looking for. I am always seeking out mentors to guide me in the process of raising myself ever higher.

Just as some examples, I talk to Larry Williams on a regular basis, several times a week. Every time I make it to a convention and I know Cap will be there, I seek him out and spend quality time absorbing as much as I can. When I had the opportunity at MBSX06 to have breakfast with Peter and Randy, I asked to join them. When I had the opportunity to chat with Mark at Atlantic City, I seized it. Occasionally I get a chance to vent some frustrations or bounce some ideas off of Bobby C. (MainEvent). Heck, there is even the rare occasion that my phone rings at 2AM in the morning and it's JTV... I could go on and on!

Where you see me not having an open mind by not wanting to go back "down" to where I was, I am in reality putting into practice the concept that when you/I associate with people more successful than you/I are/am, it rubs off on you. When I say that I am not interested in visiting the "hood" it is because I am working on moving forward, not backwards. Although I am more than willing to help others attain their goals too, because in the process I become better at it myself and a better person.

For far too many folks, the "ghetto" is a comfort zone, it's what they know. Sure everyone gripes about it, complains about customers not wanting to pay more for their services, etc. however, talk is cheap. If someone deosn't like their lot in life or how much money they are making, it is up to them and them alone to do something about it. It takes one of those four-letter words that scares off many who are prone to lip-service, also known as work. In other words, if you are looking to improve your station, improve your business and make it generally a better world to live in, it first requires you stepping out of your comfort zone and coming to us. When you finally do that, you will be greeted with open arms and you will find more hands outstretched to help you up than you can possibly grab on to all at once.

No, my mind is not closed. My mind and my hand is open. While I reach higher with one hand, I am reaching back to help whomever with the other. It's the reason that I fought for three years to form a local ADJA Chapter here. It's the reason that I wrote a book myself. It's the reason that I travel the country several times a year (at my own personal expense) in order to speak at meetings and events. And I am sure that much of the same holds true for Peter, Cap, Larry, Mark, Randy, Bobby C., and oh so many others.

Peter took the time and made the effort to better himself. I have taken the time to listen, learn and apply it myself. When you or anyone else is ready to step up, there are plenty of good folks just waiting to offer a helping hand, but the process requires you to take the first step...

Charles - Excellent post....I guess my only comments is that if someone is comfortable in their comfort zone, why is that a bad thing. If someone feels that at $500 per event that is a fair price, who are we to call him unprofessional?

You are a professional in every sense of the word, unless you subscribe to the Merry dictionary. By his definition you may not be a professional dj because you are involved in, or derive significant income from other revenue streams.

I harbour no ill well towards Peter Merry...when you read his posts there are nuggets of wealth that can be pulled from them. I fail to understand his reasoning on certain issues.

We all recognize what the issues are.... and it's not the presence of part time operators...Energy should be foccussed on dealing with those issues, not alienating those that simply choose not to make dj'ing theor primary calling.....

Let me put it this way...

We all know who Randy Moss is. I believe he is the most talented wide receiver that ever walked. But in real life, he's a pri^%. I'm glad he's not with Minnesota anymore.

Another perfect example of this type of personality is Michael Jackson. I've never seen a more talented performer... but in real life, he's a pri^% and perve^%.

Peter's been at the mobile DJ game for how many years?

One of my two DJ business role models has been at the game for just about 15 years, (13 of them under a business model I know well and trust).

Even if Peter's model "takes off" at a currently projected growth, the best he can do by today's measure in an exponentially larger consumerbase market is little over $300,000/year.

The role model I watch spanks Peter's projected revenues in a fraction of the time, with a fraction of the potential consumerbase, by almost 3-to-1.

But, ya know, if one wants to limit themselves to turning to that source for advice just to get that limited of a yeild, go for it.

There is more than one way to make a substantial living in this business. Personally, a 7-figure revenue in a fraction of the time it's taken Peter to get to a projected 6-figure revenue is a much more attractive endevour.

I just love DJing-period! I don't really care who wrote a DJ book or who is speaking at what seminar. I really don't care who gets paid 4 figures to do what I do at 3 figures. I am good at what I do and I am happy with what I get paid. It amazes me that some people who just trip over their own feet to praise "professional" DJs who do the same thing that I do. I do what I do because I have a passion for it. I never set out to turn my passion into a money-making corporation. Many(not all) DJs find out early in their career that there is good money in this business. The passion falls prey to corporate business practice. I say, go ahead and give your seminars, write your books, raise your prices, swell your heads, hire your cronies, run your business. I am not impressed nor am I bowing down and paying homage. I love what I do and I'm good at it. I entertain people at their wedding, holiday event, prom, reunion, etc. I ask you; do you still have the passion today that you did when you 1st started in this business? If you do, that is wonderful; keep it up.

Good luck to you all and if they leave your event satisfied then job well done; you are successful...thx
