That said... there are times when that odd request at the event comes up from the client.... that absolutely has to be played... that necessitates the use of sources other than your professionally prepared music... not every DJ has every song new or old available at the drop of a hat.... but, with the internet they can.

I've played streaming audio and will freely admit I got burned once.... but only once..... and that's a risk I'll take to satisfy my clients needs.

Isn't getting burned once "enough".. How many times do you get burned, or burn individual clients....before it is unacceptable....?

I don't and won't ever...I'm not comfortable with my clients getting burned once...

That suggests you are simply taking an adverserial position for the sake of debate. You've already stated that you've done it and also gotten "burnt" once; so you're not really playing devils advocate....:tricool:
 
Everyone seems to be ignoring a major point no matter what the internet source, it's the internet! My gig laptop has all network connectivity disabled. If I need a file from the internet I use my everyday laptop (aka backup gig laptop) to go online and connect to itunes, amazon, etc. My gig machine NEVER goes on the internet, not at a gig, not at home. The only way data gets on it is through an external drive which was populated from my highly secured daily use laptop.

So, if I absolutely need a song that I don't have and if I have connectivity I will attempt to purchase it using my secondary laptop, play it once in headphones to make sure it's OK, then transfer it to a thumb drive and put it on my gig machine to play at the event.

If I can't find it from a legal source, depending on the situation, I might scan youtube to see if there is a high quality "official" version published by the label or artist themselves (in which case it would take a roomful of lawyers to determine the law versus the appearance to a common man that they have given it to the public domain). I might rip it to an mp3 then transfer that to my gig laptop. While I have legally purchased songs over the net at a gig, I have not ripped a youtube version and hope I never hit such a situation, but if it's an officially published version I think I might do it.

Sorry but, I don't buy the big bad evil internet as being the problem... it's the content one chooses to view and access on the internet that's the problem....

Here's the solution.... don't go to questionable sites.... problem solved. :tribiggrin:
 
My problem wouldn't be content so much as for some reason, the music stopping during the song due to one of many reasons. Video starts to rebuffer, for what ever reason the signal breaks and you lose connection.
 
Setting aside all the other potential problems -- internet access, legality, etc., I'm not comfortable playing a song live, that I am not familiar with.

If I felt the need to play a song, I would already have it, and know it frontwards and backwards. Downloading it there, and giving a quick listen in the headphones does not give me the opportunity to "know" that song, and it also distracts me from what I'm doing.


That's why I've seldom played requests -- they generally don't fit in with where I'm going in the larger scheme of things. My job is not to satisfy each and every individual in the room, it's to satisfy the majority of the people, the majority of the time.


I still think it comes down to wanting to be loved by everyone, and being afraid to say "No, I don't have that", or "Sorry, but Stairway To Heaven probably wouldn't fit in between Beyonce and PCD". I think you do yourself, and the DJ industry as a whole, a great disservice by trying to please every single person that walks up to you with a request. It's YOUR show, you should know what to play to please that majority, and you should have the music you need to do it.
 
Hmmmmmmm...... been on the internet at everyshow.... other than one song.... which btw would have been fine if the idiot who uploaded it to whatever server had completed the song.... jeeze why so critical ;)

Seriously.... the full story is this.... using the newest feature of streaming online content and not realizing that a song should have been longer than what was available simply ment the song ended abruptly.... but, not due to the big bad internet crapping out....

Since that time in all honesty I've never streamed at a gig.... now purchase and download yes.... most definately.
