Technically, what's the difference between a song / video and multiple songs / videos? Legally, there isn't.

Seriously.... the full story is this.... using the newest feature of streaming online content and not realizing that a song should have been longer than what was available simply ment the song ended abruptly.... but, not due to the big bad internet crapping out....

Since that time in all honesty I've never streamed at a gig.... now purchase and download yes.... most definately.

But it could have been caused from the Internet crapping out. You can't convince me that everywhere you go, you have the best wifi connection. I'm also a techie, I know better.

How can the loss of internet cause a problem with your computer functioning?

Are you streaming your DJ software?

Come on now I've lost wifi connection plenty of times never once did it crash my computer... all it did was make it impossible to chat with you fine folks during cocktail and diner... LOL

FYI -- it is saved by your browser.

Try this with FF:

Go to YT, and play a video. Then open a new tab, type in about:cache, and press Enter. Goto to Disk cache device, and click on List Cache Entries.

Do a Ctrl+F, and search for .swf

You can tell by the date and time what yer looking for. Copy the folder location, and pop it into Windows Explorer, and you will be in your cache folder. Sort by date modified. Find the oddly numbered file, copy it, and paste it somewhere and rename it to say "John Fogerty - Down On The Corner.flv" (that's the video I just used to test this).

Viola -- you have your downloaded, and saved file -- open with your FLV player of choice ;) :)

BTW, just for S&G, I just did a back to back comparison of the same song...

VBR MP3, WAV, and the YT HQ version of this...


This is in the Man Cave, using the HRT DAC. The MP3 sounds ok enough for DJ work (dull, wall of sound type), the WAV is much better (although not mastered all that well on my CD) -- the YT version sounds dead compared to either.

I love the song, but are you doing justice to the client by playing something like that...? Either of my cuts sound much better, even though they shouldn't (Fogerty as a rule, sounds better live, than he does in the studio)...


Besides, I felt like playing this video on a 10 foot screen :D

Uhmm. Wasn't this whole thread based on using the Internet to play a song at a show? I think the loss of the Internet could cause a major problem, do you not?

An active or inactive wifi connection will generally not affect the operation of a system but if your primary system is now browsing the internet and hangs up on a site, this could have an impact on the function of your system.

Why would you risk it though? Why would you set yourself up for a possible failure? Let's also add that if your wifi is on, it is an available connection, therefore, it also is possible to break into your system. Again, why would you risk your performance on any of this?

If I felt the need to play a song, I would already have it, and know it frontwards and backwards. Downloading it there, and giving a quick listen in the headphones does not give me the opportunity to "know" that song, and it also distracts me from what I'm doing.


That's why I've seldom played requests -- they generally don't fit in with where I'm going in the larger scheme of things. My job is not to satisfy each and every individual in the room, it's to satisfy the majority of the people, the majority of the time.


I still think it comes down to wanting to be loved by everyone, and being afraid to say "No, I don't have that", or "Sorry, but Stairway To Heaven probably wouldn't fit in between Beyonce and PCD". I think you do yourself, and the DJ industry as a whole, a great disservice by trying to please every single person that walks up to you with a request. It's YOUR show, you should know what to play to please that majority, and you should have the music you need to do it.

Amen I say to you. I agree. Its all in taking control. I did a Gig last night and had to say "no" a few times. Not because I did not have it....it was because it was not a good fit! I even told that to the requester.

That's the difference between a human jukebox, and a DJ/Entertainer... ;)

If yer just gonna stand around and play requests all night, you might just as well give them a jukebox, and a roll of quarters...


Feeling warm and fuzzy is nice and all, but it's not what commands a decent wage (or referrals) in this business. You have to walk in with a clear plan of what you want to accomplish, and how you're going to go about it. It's business (even though we enjoy what we do)... ;)
