Jury Duty?

In NJ being self employed doesn't seem to even be a possible reason for being excused, proving financial hardship is a valid reason as long as you have documentation to prove financial hardship.

So since there is no contract and he doesn't support any dependents there is a slim chance he could use that for an excuse.

While "excused" (e.g. do not have to serve) would be good...."postponed" may be more than good enough in this case.

13. Can I get my summons date changed?
The Jury Management Offices mail summonses a minimum of five weeks in advance of the reporting date in
order to provide sufficient notice for jurors to make all necessary arrangements. If you have a conflict with
the days for which you have been summoned, you may request to be postponed. Requests must come directly
from the juror. Employers or others may not call or write on your behalf to request a postponement. You
should make your request on your qualification questionnaire that you return within ten days of receipt. If
some later occurrence affects your ability to serve on the summons date you should notify the Jury
Management Office as soon as possible in order to allow for timely processing.

Petit Jurors - Please indicate on your questionnaire dates to which you would like your service to be
rescheduled. When deciding on your new reporting date, please keep in mind that jurors are not summoned
on State holidays, the week of Thanksgiving, or generally on Fridays in most counties and during the last two
weeks of the year.

Grand Jurors -The term of grand jury service is generally one day each week for a specified number of
weeks. Depending on the nature of the request, service may be rescheduled to a future date.

State Grand Jury - You will receive written notification and instructions regarding reporting to Trenton for
service as a State grand juror. The instructions will also indicate the procedures for requesting an excuse.

I never heard of having to have a license to DJ. I know tons of companies that don't have a license. Now, if a license is free, then I have no problems getting one. Although, since I do this as a hobby job, if I have to pay for the license or something, than its a no go... I do this for fun before I go off to college and get some extra cash, since I can't get a real job around here...

So great news! I called today, and I spoke directly to the judge on the phone for about 30 minutes. He sounded very honest and straight forward. He asked me what I do, and I explained to him everything, along with college next year, and then asked me if I drove and had a way to get there. I told him not at the moment, and I don't know how I would get there yet since no one can drive me, and a taxi is too expensive (public transportation does not run in my area).

He truthfully asked me if I really wanted to do jury duty, and I told him yes if I could easily get there and it didn't affect my scheduling, but right now not really, its a huge hassle and would cost us a lot in money between loss of gigs and taxi to get there, money which we don't have at the moment.

So he told me to hang on for a second, came back with a laugh and told me I was "excused" and not to worry, he heard all the stories before of a lot of problems with similar transportation issues with my age group, college, and so on, so he put me in the system for them to try again when I am 21. He did this only because there were actual people that "want" to get into jury duty and they have a line of people that want to volunteer (aka. the retired older folks) I am extremely pleased I talked to him, and he even told me to have fun at my next gig and rip up the dance-floor (his brother use to DJ and he knew how it all worked out)...

Jury duty AND DJ'ing? The gig was a day gig. 1-5pm...wouldn't of left much wiggle room.

I usually get to gigs 2 hours early now, 1-2 hours to pack up...I've had an ongoing hernia the past few years, it got worse in the past year...so I move like a snail now...

October 26th is a Saturday - why would you have Jury duty on a Saturday?

Really.
On the other hand - I think it's going to be a better jury. Do we really want our tax money wasted on trials with jurors who can't be bothered to show up? Is this really a jury of our "peers?"
 
The sad part is he said that nobody where he lives likes him. What did you do that nobody likes you and why can't your dad take you there? You said he can take you to the gig. Something smells fishy.

I doubt there is a mobile DJ license in New Jersey. Like most states, a business would require a license for the commercial premises (if any) or a license and bond to be a booking agent (multi-ops). Why that list includes DJs and other non-licensed work but excludes obvious licenses like law and real estate makes no sense.

Glad to hear that you worked this one out...but it sounds like nothing about you is prepared to handle "a lot more business".

I agree with you 100% I didn't mean a specific "mobile dj license" I meant that he needs to have whatever license it is they are talking about if he wants to be recognized as a legit business by the state of nj.

It happens a lot anywhere...not just Mon-Friday. I think only Sunday's is when they can't call you in...

He was in his lunch break...the lady at the desk was talking to me, and said hold on, I'm handing the phone over to the judge. My thought was "oh crap". That escalated quickly...

Neighbors won't do squat for me, they work on the weekends. The one neighbor that does live next to me and is available, hates me (because of incidents of loud music, but he's just downright rude all the time and complains if he hears the slightest noise down to the garbage barrel lid)
Family lives too far away, grandma lives in the area, but she can barely drive anymore in her own retirement village.

My dad can take me to the gig, which is 2 miles away. He won't drive 30 miles to the courthouse and back. It's too far and he can't pay for the gas at this moment...money has been extremely tight...He barely makes the drive to work and back 20 miles with tolls, and that rips up the cost as it is...

I'm thankful it worked out. Otherwise I'd have a big issue on my hands...I'm like a trapped monkey at my house.
