According to Mix, his reason for not using a sub was that there was no space to put one.

In addition to there being no space, he obviously thought it was not needed - same as you. Were you there?

if there was space for a speaker stand then there was space for a sub.

So other than you're feel that you didn't need them, why didn't you use them as there was obviously space for them.

When I do small house parties mainly Karaoke, in a residence, I do not need a sub to get bass.

And neither did he, in his small space - unless of course you have some magical special speaker technology that no one else has.

If I did that SAME event in a commercial venue or at a Public space, I will definitely use at least one sub.You all are not comprehending.

What if that commercial / public space was the exact same dimensions as the residential dimensions? Keep in mind that everyone is looking at what your answer is. If you answer that you would use a sub, then what is the difference.

You cannot compare someone's living room to a Bowling Alley of Hall.

Sure I can - I know some people that have rooms larger than bowling alleys. You cannot provide advice to one about having a sub and then not doing it yourself. Also, do you honestly believe 8" drivers (arrayed or not) can truly reproduce bass? According to even you, you need a sub to get that fullness - that the smaller drivers cannot reproduce - but then you dont have a sub because you don't need them to get bass?

You all are not comprehending.

Or maybe it is you that is not comprehending.

If you answer that you would use a sub, then what is the difference. We are talking average family residential not mansions. I will use a sub in a mansion style living room. A living room that can comfortably accommodate 20-25 people is not that large.

Yes it does produce Bass, we are not talking about Hip hop hard rock and roll and high SPL in someone's average living room. Have you ever heard the Bose 802s, the Pro Sound one?

Or maybe it is you that is not comprehending.
Answers above are in red.

I'm calling you out Canute. Here are some various posts from you - using tops without subs - in, you guessed it - public spaces.

I also chose one, my main system but I too use other configurations depending on the room, acoustics and amount of people. There is one place (A restaurant) where just the two Bose in Full Range will suffice.

What happened to residential places only? In fact, I'd like to think ANY restaurant (public space) is large enough for a sub.

Next.

So is that Full Range with subs or dedicated signal (From Crossover) Mid/Highs to tops and Bass to subs? Two different animals you know! :triwink:

Hmmm - you had Full Range but NO sub.

Last night I co-DJed a party with another Buddy of mine. He got the gig before getting out of the business so even though he was present, the equipment and music library used was mine.

It was for a yacht/Sailing Club, can you guess what was their favorite artist? I used my two Bose 802s with no subs, just full range and of course my regular processing. Well, early into the night a gentleman came up to me and asked if I could turn down the bass because it was making an older woman's pacemaker go haywire! Can you imagine someone asking for less lows in a Bose! Wow! That floored me.

In all fairness it was a small banquet room, the dance floor part was about 8' square and about 60 people were in attendance.

A room in a house with 25 people is not large enough to deserve a sub but the public space restaurant with 60 people and an 8' dance floor doesn't get one either?

The bass was indeed accented because that part of the building has suspended floors over the water and the interior was in the form of an "A" frame with all solid wood. I was really impressed by the sound that the Bose put out. It was the ideal setting for a L1 with a bass unit or two.
Almost at the end of the night a request was made made from one of the guests for a mike to sing a song. I told her that I had the Karaoke option but was not set up to do a lyrics display. She said she knew the words and then after opening the Karaoke software she proceeded to sing a few songs. She had an excellent voice and even though I was not using two or three way system, just full range, the music, her voice and the system sounded really good. I closed the night by singing "Margaritaville for them with everyone joining in the chorus. Plus side to this extra add on is, that they will be planning a Karaoke night next month.

Here is the venue: http://www.bradyslandingrestaurant.com/banquets.html

Oh look, another public place.

All the above pertains to ONE particular Venue. That is why I emphasized "There is one place". It was the restaurant with a small room and it was all wood flooring over water, wood walls wooden ceiling. The bass was enough. If I wanted to add a sub which I had in the Van I could have but I did not need to do so. There will be circumstances where the acoustics and or size will be in your favor to eliminate the need for a sub. However, as you very well know, the majority of the chaps who post gig reports and claim that they did not use a sub(s) because there was no space, are the ones to whom I call to task. To them I have always said, if there is space for a stand then there is space for a sub.

Bullsh-crap Canute. That's pure bull! You said you would not do that for commercial or public spaces - and now you're back peddling. Is a restaurant NOT a public space? You get an A for effort tho. If you emphasized "One Place" then that is the restaurant and not a residence. 1+1=2.

You even posted a poll asking what configurations people use - you didn't list tops without a sub because you didn't need them - I wonder why ...

What configuration of Speakers do you use. Please note Tops can be used Full Range with subs or Two way (Mids/Highs) with subs and (Active Internal or external) Crossover.
Please Vote In Poll

All I'm asking you to do is be CONSISTENT. If you give advice (or pick someone apart), you better back it up - and you're certainly not.

Read again, it is the same place and same event.

Again the ones who I may pick apart are the ones who say there is no room when clearly by their own pics one can see there is room.

I don't care if it's the same place, same event, 27 events at the same place .. or not - you CLEARLY stated:

Is this not a PUBLIC space or COMMERCIAL venue????

What does this have to do with being consistent and backing up your own advice?

Use common sense my friend. To every rule there will be exceptions. When giving guidance especially to new people who read these threads I prefer to steer people in the right direction first. I can see it now, the ones in the future who will post gig reports, they will be saying it was not needed. Like I have said if someone wants a fair assessment or feedback on a gig report then post enough pics so others can see the room from different vantage points. See the Gig report that was posted a few days ago by Mr. Nichols? It does not leave anything to the imagination. Don't post a pic of only the Poster in a corner and nothing else for relevance.

I get it and I agree - but that rule also applies to everyone else on here (and in reality), so relax.

How does one do that when I can easily search posts and find you not living up to your own advice / statements.

Should have thought of that before someone called y'er bluff. As you stated previously, there are exceptions to every rule (this does not excuse you opposing your own advice). Unless you have the official 'exception to the rule' book, I suggest you relax. If you want to lead by example, then you can't flock up.

Maybe you should step out of the advice arena for a few. Take a step back, take a breath and realize that we're all not Canute and Canute is not us. We are all in this together and we are all different. This world / site would be a pretty frickin' boring place if we were all the same. What I do in my house, you might not do in yours - but that does NOT make it wrong - and if you're going to throw stones, you better not live in a glass house.

Food for thought:

I repeat, my goal is to stay away from a sound that sounds like regular DJ speakers. I achieve that quite well. Those who want to follow the masses and use what everyone else is using, let them go ahead.

very rarely have I ever used the Bose by themselves in full range. We all know that they lack in Bass at Full range.

When I do small house parties mainly Karaoke, in a residence, I do not need a sub to get bass.

Hmmmm.

Hmmmm.
The key words are "Rarely". They don't have the booming Bass like the Bigger speakers. That is a given but they have enough for certain applications. So that is why I rarely use them without the Bass in full range. Mine is mostly used in a two way configuration where they are only fed Mids and Highs and that is where they excel in my opinion.

Do you really want to continue this? Don't make excuses, key words, find loopholes or other reasons - otherwise don't pick others apart that have excuses, key words, loopholes or other reasons (valid or not). Be consistent. Treat yourself and others as you want to be treated. Whether you know it or not, you teach people how to treat you - how you want to be treated - how you want them to interact with you. We all do.

and this is why there are so few people here anymore..... :urgh:

Nah, that's because the server doesn't always work. I stay logged in all the time, but 2-3 times a week in the morning, I get errors, and can't get in for a couple hours -- makes you want to go somewhere else. So I go read the news, or look up the Canute/Mix disorder which I believe, the CDC now considers a disease.

I'm sure Merck will come up with some expensive drug for that -- although I would recommend they toke one up instead.

Danno is apparently getting laid a lot, Tuck is feeling up nurses, Val and Jeff are frozen solid, and Fred is still determined to cut every tree down in the country.

So, there you have it :)
