My partner is giving me a headache!

Mix when I talk to you I feel like I'm walking on a treadmill I'm tired when its over but I haven't got anywhere.....

if you need people to know who you are for them to come out to a party then What difference wil any form of advertising be paid or not? I'm pretty good at math so let's see you had 10 people @ $5.00 per person minus your postcards and divide by three. How much did it cost you to work last Friday night?

These people are using you plain and simple. Every time there is money involved it's you that is paying. Tell them you are broke or ask them for a loan a few times see how long stick
they stick around.

BTW Mix I'm looking at a blue laser how about shipping the money up to me I'll let you play the first time you are in town

There is?
You betcha! Dollar for Dollar there is more money to be made per hour doing regular party Gigs. You don't have all spend all that time prepping, meetings with prospective brides, rehearsals and the headaches that go along with Bridezillas, MOBs and Planners. It is also much fun as you the DJ can be really creative and do what DJs are meant to do, play and mix music not just push buttons. At that time you are the show.

You're missing it big time. This wasn't my party first of all and they didn't get any postcards made up. I had nothing to do with the party. My partner just wanted me to show up and i did with my camera. Haven't you heard the old saying you've got to spend money to make money? If done right postcards can be a big plus to getting people to come out to a party you're having. I can get 1000 double sided color postcards for $75.00. They could have done that instead of just depending on Facebook alone. Like i said if the party was setup the right way and people knew who they were they possibly could have gotten a nice crowd to show up.

I mentioned the thing about people knowing who you are because why would they want to come and hear you play when they can go to a local bar and hear another DJ where they can get in free instead of paying to come to your party? Do remember this. Not everyone has a computer or is caught up into checking Facebook every day to see what's happening. I know some that would die if there was no more Facebook.

Your statements almost contradict each other.

True, parties require less of an investment with time.
But time doesn't cost me anything, and weddings pay a lot more BECAUSE of the extra time we put into it.
Around here, there are more weddings than parties...even around the Holidays.
I must agree with the part about headaches, although I love dealing with people, so it's not a burden to me.

Here are pictures of the party last Friday. That was the basically the size of the crowd that showed up. That's why i wouldn't invest any of my money into such parties. That's how the last few parties have looked. I offered to do a party with him in a place and i would put up half the money to rent the place out. $175.00 and i didn't want the money back either.

Before you think I'm crazy let me tell you why i was willing to do this. Because of the place i knew i could get people i know that are members of the 12 step program I'm involved in to come to the party. It would have been at least i say 30 people just from me alone. That's not counting the people they would have brought in. Besides the place isn't but so big and it would have made the party look like even more of a success. That in return would have gotten us more work with that 12 step program and some private events that members were having. My plan also included me submitting a proposal to do a convention for that program which pays more then peanuts.

I just submitted a proposal to an area. I gave them a price of $2,400.00 for the weekend. You have to play for say 4-5 hours each nite. The only thing is that the equipment we have isn't good enough to do a convention in a big ballroom is where they have the dances. So that would need for me to rent the system from a DJ i know that can provide the right sound at a cost of 1k for the weekend. I put the proposal in because they finally gave me a chance to show thyem what i can do and they loved it!!!!!!!!!!!

While I'm happy for anyone who realizes they need help and enters a 12-step program, you do realize that they're not big spenders at the bar, right? The cover charge only gets you so far... bar owners want to see an increase in drink sales, too.

They would come to that and the owner would have been very happy. One thing please stop thinking because he's my partner that i had anything to do with that party last Friday Nite. That was their doing. The one I'm having tonite is me talking the manager into doing this. He talked it over with the owner and it was ok with her. They know me very well.

Let me tell you the reason why i picked this place. I picked this place because i don't have to worry about any drama. That means I'm not worried about a fight breaking out. That's a big thing around here. Finding a friendly peaceful place. Also because they already have their regular people who come in the bar anyway. So the bar will already have a nice crowd to begin with. So anything i add on to that will be plus for me and the bar. Also the bar isn't that big so even if say 30 people show up it won't look like a ghost town. I know more then that will be there tonite but i was just using that as an example.

I wouldn't want to pick a place that holds 200 people or more and only 30 people show up. Then it would look like the party is a bust.

Yeah, I've heard of that place... "Club Soda".

So now you've got the opposite problem - how do you attract people who want to get loose and have a drink before they hit the dance floor? You could send out a million postcards, but if there's no drinking, you'll have to work twice as hard to get people through the door. Good luck.

First of all, I really don't do much Weddings. With that being said, I make more money per Corporate Gig, Country Club, Golfs Club and Production Gig than my colleagues who do Weddings. The creative factor where I can play whatever I want without having to deal with a Must Play, Do Not Play List is paramount to me. I like taking requests but I don't want someone else doing my programming.

So people don't tell you the styles of music they want? You play what you want? Part of your job is to have the right music for that particular client and then they need to have confidence that you know what you're doing.

I too agree with not having someone give me a complete list of songs they want played. I'm not a jukebox, I'm a DJ/entertainer. I don't mind them coming up with a few songs they say they must hear me play but not a super long list. If they want to do that then they can find someone else to do the event.

I thank you for having the courage to say you don't do many weddings and that's not really your cup of tea. Some just think automatically because you're a DJ you should have any music a potential client wants and be able to do any event. What they don't realize is some are better at one thing then others.

I I have all genres of music. Songs are selected fro the Library for any type of events including Weddings. So I will always have the right music with me. There is no such thing as "Sole Wedding Music". Anything can be played at a Wedding depending on who is there. Yes, I ask the client what style of music they and their guests may like but I don't hand over control to them. It is my job to put it all together and make everyone happy.
