I'm working at The Factory at Franklin tonight in what they call "The Commons Area". It's like a food court type area for the mall. 150 guests. I'm hitting a pair of 18s, and Carvin neo12 tops. The next room is a 5k-7k sq ft hall (where I've played before). I was over at the door for their GE and thought there was no music. Keep in mind there's is a big hall, full draping, high dollar uplighting, lekos on the dance floor. Check out the DJ they hired:

That's right, looks like a Fender Passport. Two dudes (actual working DJs) sitting behind the table with their laptop and passport amp sitting on the table. It's sounds like crap (of course).

Rick, why do you continue to do this sort of stuff?

You're posting pics of another DJ's setup, critiquing them and saying that they flat out sucked without the other DJ being here to have a chance to speak his side of the story.

That's how Rick Rolls... xf:D

Notice hot blond hanging out with said "sucky DJ's", and no pics of Rick with any chicks near him (or any pics at all)... ;)

I don't know what that person's situation is. Could be a start up, could be a friend of the bride that borrowed equipment, could be a very low budget DJ, or could be a DJ that promised her the world and gave her that. Could also be one of those national companies that found someone on the internet for $200 to cover the event.

I do know one thing. They would not be my competition. If a bride met with me, and met with them, the only way they would hire them is if they wanted a DJ for the absolute cheapest...so the bride wouldn't be my customer then anyway.

I'm with J Mac on this one.

You like to down play others because of gear and being cheap. But yet you buy bulls h i t gear and blow it up. Used vans with a gazillion miles on them. Look in the mirror first before you s h i t on somebody else.

Pretty harsh words, John. What I question was hiring a DJ with a Fender passport for a 5k sq ft venue where you're spending $2k-$3k in lighting, probably $2k in drapery work, etc. etc. As for my buying habits, I think you're out of line. Sure, I'm using Carvin tops. They sound good and have done well. Sure I popped a crossover. You've never had a speaker go bad? I'll continue to upgrade in time but for now, this rig sounds good and does the job and then some. As for the van, a 4 year old van with 140k miles is "a gazillion miles"? So instead of paying cash for a good, used vehicle you think it'd be more wise to start making payments on a $30k van that's brand new? Sounds pretty stupid to me.

(UPDATE)

By the way John, speaking of crap gear that I always blow up......had an interesting conversation after the gig last night. The B&G were thrilled, it was off-the-hook. Her planner was a friend who'd gotten married last Sept. The planner came up afterwards with lots of "thank you, you were great"s. She then told me "I considered you for our wedding and we ended up hiring the old, bald-headed dude. He ended up sending a sub, DJ Dan" (a well-known DJ in the area) " and he just wasn't that good and not interactive at all. I really wish we had hired you instead." Sure glad she didn't catch me with my blown-up gear and ragged out van.

Do you think a Fender passport is sufficient for a 5k sq ft room for a wedding reception? If this had been one of your friends pointing out a DJ who did that, you'd be jumping on the bandwagon. Pretty telling..........

I'd really like to see just one of these posts where I down played anyone because of gear or being cheap.

Rick, to be fair, you did just say:

It would appear that the DJs were being dismissed due to gear choice ..

I read John's diss to say that I make a habit of taking swings at others' gear. Yes, I did it here (as it should be dissed). I'm not aware of taking digs on a regular basis. That was my point.

point of interest some look at my Dynacord tops and probably think its a Passport due to the size. Rick if it isnt the planner, the photographer, the banquet manager, Bridezilla, Groom in overalls smoking a stogie, Black people who are prejudice Im guessing you would get bored with the biz as you seem to have some sort of negative story each and every week. You have a ton of improvement as do we all but it always seems to be someone elses problem. IOh and its not the first set or speaker that you have fried according to previous weekly issues with a given gig.

I'll agree he's pretty spot on with this assessment. I think i might have posted the same thread. I don't make a habit of knocking others , but this does look a little funny. I see nothing wrong with his post, except i wouldn't refer to that as competition.

Yes, I think a Fender passport might be sufficient for this room if loud music and an obnoxious DJ is not what the client wanted at this event. You are ignorant to the real facts here and it is entirely possible that everything in that picture is EXACTLY how it should be. The pictures make it appear that the room hasn't been setup with much of a dance floor in mind - so your notion of what kind of sound is required seems uninformed at best.

Oh, you're right. I did have those Electro Voice speakers that were going thermal...............as for the sound system. While I haven't heard your Dynacords, I'm quite certain you wouldn't put up with the tinny little tone this passport system creates. You didn't see the passport amp, sitting on the table? I also don't think you'd be sitting behind your table in a jeans and t-shirt while working either.

You're right the picture doesn't show it but there was a full dance floor setup. 20 feet deep and all the way across (between the beams).

Rick,
I'd love to see pictures of your setup from the weekend...
or a a video of the crowd having a good time.

I did not get any shots of my rig but it was nothing special. 8-foot table, pair of 18s on either side, 12" tops, front board to hide the junk and 1 t-bar to the left of my table. The jammed me and the photobooth (not mine) in the corner. To be transparent, I thought the dance floor was just okay. Not great, but good. They sure seemed to be thrilled and you should've seen the expressions on the faces as the other event let out an hour before ours did. I counted 3 videographers hired for that event.

BTW, here's my normal rig (same thing I used this past weekend.

They should have used my Bose AWM instead of the Fender Passport! Rick, you need to buy a Bose AWM! ;)
