I would think that any DJ worth their salt can actually manually mix the songs not just push play. Steve, these issues goes a long way back with me. Nobody is saying that every DJ needs to have an Electronics Degree or they have to Excel in Scatching but for gawd's sake they should at least know the basics. Even up to this day I run across people who barely know how to run the DJ software that they have. I have actually witnessed guys running Windows Media Player to play songs for background music when they have Virtual DJ as their Software..wtf...To me that is so asinine!
But, just because they can, doesn't mean they need to. In a club, yes, but at a reunion/party/wedding, it's not really necessary. I have Numark Cue (same as VDJ), PCDJ Red mobile (my normal app), but sometimes it's just as easy to use iTunes for background music as it is easier to build playlists there than the other apps .. that and I use it to manage my music on my idevices anyway, so it's there. All tools ..
Not busting yer ass personally Steve, but just putting this out there.
I wrote a feature many years ago, that does random play based upon criteria you set. It auto mixes for background/dinner, whatever you want. Simple and easy to use -- you just choose the criteria.
Open Rockit, right click on the crossfader (that's in the manual somewhere I think -- but nobody reads it), and choose your criteria with a couple clicks.
It'll do all yer work for ya.
No offense taken .. Red Mobile and Cue have similar capabilities (and RockIt is on the list for the next upgrade ). I was just saying iTunes is a tool I use occasionally just because I have used it now for almost 10 years (need it for my iPhone and iPad) and occasionally use it to play background music a) because it's there anyway b) there is no negative on the music/sound and c) because it really is easier to set up a quick playlist vs the other apps. And I have no qualms in using it when appropriate or convenient.

Ok I agree that you or anyone can do as they please. It is your/their equipment and they own it. However, think for a minute, you setup a playlist in iTunes, Joe Blow walks over and sees that..... then we wonder why there are so many copycats and wannabes!No offense taken .. But Joe can go to Walmart or Costco and buy an all-in-one DJ system today and he probably already knows someone who has DJ'd a party with an iPod and a boombox. I'm not going to worry about Joe. He doesn't have the equipment I have, doesn't have the charisma (I'm guessing here) and probably isn't going to drop $5000+ to get there anytime soon .. so he may think he can do it, but reality says otherwise.
As it has been hashed in this and other theads, there are more important things to worry about than having a guest see iTunes on my screen. I don't use it often, but it's the least of my worries when I do.

Trust me. We have had some come on here wanting to be DJs with budgets less than one thousand dollars. LOL. To me, everyone who is out looking for a gig is my competition. It does not mean that a client that pays some bloke $250.00 to do a gig can not afford more than $250.00. It is just that they have not seen the value to pay more or do not know any better. Every Gig is worth money and the more the low ballers are eliminated the more the demand goes up! The more the demand and the lesser the supply, the better the cash rewards.
I will agree that some clients who hire some low ballers (Not all of them are bad) find out they made a mistake after their event is ruined. However, one still can't argue that a gig has been lost to the wrong person.

First and foremost, that MEP Crap of which you speak costs $1,500.00. How many wannabes do you know that will spend that kind of dough for a controller? Even some on here think it is too expensive for them. Secondly, I never said that I use it in lieu of live mixing or in place of something I had there with me. That controller comes with two decks that play independently just like in the old days before DJ programs, which means you have to still mix if you load one CD/MP3 to each deck. I did make a short Automix Playlist for awhile but I do not always use that feature as a primary option.Hey Dude

There are Passive as well as Active Playlists just so you know and even the active one is subject to be edited along the way.

Yer somewhat correct in your assessment. Up on The Farm, I had unlimited access to the wedding venues. I suppose I could have that here, but it's not a huge market here.
It's an interesting place my friend. We're in snowbird season -- everybody plays whatever, to make a buck. Nobody gets married here.

I am so glad that I am into my last few years in the business. Maybe I'll be a Wal Mart greeter and make fun of the ole Dames when they enter the store. I won't have to worry about a backup. Walmart got many of those waiting in the wings. On my break, I can go outside and join the smokers but since I do not smoke I'll just pass gas instead. ..they would not know..they will think its a new Cigarette flavor. The world is changing, my vinyl is collecting dust, my JBL scoops look like a great place to hide in the event of a nuclear attack. I won't have to worry about spreading them far as i'll need all the coverage i can get. And the beat goes on ...because it was a dark and stormy night!........
