My New fat DJ set up

Steve, much better setup. I did not like the old truss heavy look at all.
I like the black scrim for the light tripod. Try some kind of up light. The stand needs some sort of energy. The speaker scrims... they scrims...darkness... Again, they need a nice, elegant light.
I'm not sure why are you carrying 4 subs. 2 would be more THAN enough for a small dance floor...(judging from your photo, maybe 120 ppl?) I would use 2 - zx1/sb2a combo and call it a day. But that just me. I'm going to use exactly the same speaker setup from your last photo for my upcoming wedding in 2 weeks . For 300 ppl. LOL

Anyway, your system is much more elegant now, next time if you have wedding with less than 200 ppl., try to use 2 subs with poles for RCFs and let us know how do you like it.
Hope you don't mind my tips, but been there, done that. Thanks Andrew

Thanks Andrew - I'm not real comfortable with the 310A's on the SB2A's....that's just me. I've contemplated uplighting them...I do have some weidamark Par 64's

and the sunglasses and gold chain don't look silly?:tricool:

I don't wear gold -- just plain shells. I'm not as infatuated with myself, as some would believe... :)

I do find it fun to make believe I'm a rock star at 53 -- but that's all camera angles and lighting man... ;)

I certainly enjoy parodying you folks that take that sh_t seriously though

It's all good, Rick....

No worries Matey :)

I still think the skirts suck though, and I'm probably gonna dream about flying monkeys, and melting witches for the next 30 days... :sqerr: :sqlaugh:

@ Mr Positive:

I believe it's actually called constructive criticism by his peers -- We don't all live behind rose colored lenses, and not every kid in the game should get a trophy, and you can't have positive, without negative -- no matter what BS those motivational speakers feed you... ;)

Quite frankly, certain things look downright silly, and putting dresses on tripods is one of them IMHO. Good quality, clean looking stands, show your audience your appreciation of them, by bringing top notch gear, and being able to display it with pride.

Yes, I would rather look at the positive side of things. And why do you need to repeat yourself multiple times in one thread saying basically the same thing over and over...criticizing others and how they do things for their clients?

They are not doing it for you. When was the last time you were out in the real world and performed at a wedding and not one at the bingo hall? Lots of things have changed in the years since you were doing your thing.

Christ, you're turning into a A #1 internet Troll. Oh yes, I forgot that you are special here and everyone else.... is not.

I just like to hear myself type, and I had the TV turned off a couple years ago... How about yourself...? :D

Nothing has changed Kirby. I have open access to a couple of very popular (and upscale) wedding venues within walking distance of my house -- they are owned by relatives. I help them with their internal sound setups and computer tech stuff, and in exchange, get to see what goes on. It's how I get to be at gigs, without actually having to do them (and I get free food and beer too) :)

LeBlanc and I have no issues -- he knows I'll tell him if something looks goofy to me, and I did.

Lastly -- if you can't have an open discussion that evolves, and different people chime in with different ideas -- what's the point of a chat board? If all you want, is to get a pat on the back, I think Randy and Ryan have places devoted to that ;)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to change my title to #1-special-internet-troll... :sqlaugh:

Hank - I ask myself that after every set up/strike. I'm one of those guys who feel you have to have lights.....

Okay, let me elaborate. I do not have a problem with the lights or how your setup looks here...

steve1.jpg

My issue/question is with this side of the setup...

steve2.jpg

This is typical of a lot of DJ pics I see. So, I have to ask...
What the hell is all that stuff for? Does it really take two racks of gear to run some lights and four speakers?
Even when I ran passive speakers, I never had that much gear. So, what's up?

:triconfused:

To each, his own. I too, tend to stay on the lighter side of things. This is a typical set up of mine without the facade. I also usually have a pacemaker mp3 player plugged in as well.

If and when I use a dmx controller, it's about the size of my mixer, fits in the palm of my hand.

Some DJs only do small Gigs, I consider small as up to 200 people. Medium as 200 - 400 and large 400 - + All three Indoors. Outdoor events have its own scale. For example, 1,000 people outdoor can be considered a small event and so on.
In Steve''s defense, I don't think he has too much equipment. Again, some people just plug in and push Play while others need additional equipment for different applications.
Every venue and every room has different acoustics. There is NO ONE SYSTEM THAT IS PERFECT FOR EACH AND EVERY VENUE. Things have to be tweaked to produce optimum sound. So those who say EQs, compressors etc are not needed are living in a bubble. Just because you get sound when you turn on the music does not mean that it is the best sound. However, the world abounds with lots of mediocre people and DJs too. Two speakers without subs cannot adequately have enough coverage for a room designed to hold 400 people even if 100 people are in attendance.
Some of us do more than the average wedding so we need additional equipment and whats more convenient than having everything in a rolling rack? An eight space rack takes up the same floor space as a sixteen space rack.
Some DJs are after DJ Sound while others like myself prefer a Live Sound. Trust me, clients do know the difference when they hear it and are willing to pay for it.
As Rick mentioned, this is a Chat Board to share ideas, some may be good some may not be of any use to us. Those who are offended by remarks may be thin skinned and are only looking for a pat on the back. Yet they accuse others of having big egos. When people post a Gig report and are expecting feedback, they should expect to hear opposing views. I do think that there should be constructive criticism, meaning that if you find something wrong, offer something right.
BTW In my opinion, posting only pictures of people/strangers dancing at an event is not a Gig Report. A gig report should clearly show the DJ setup, the room, the amount of people attending, a list of equipment used and maybe a song list. Showing only people dancing tells me that the DJ is hiding something and is afraid of criticism....and OOOOHHHH Yessssss....looking for a Pat On The Back!

Steve, you and I have been at odds with each other on this board but I hold no animosity towards you. Keep the scrims if you may but move them out so you area does not look so concentrated.
That is my story and I'm sticking to it!

Again, some people just plug in and push Play while others need additional equipment for different applications.

That's my question. Is all that actually "needed" or is that subjective? Is everything in those racks powered up for every event? If so, why and for what function? If not, why not make one case for average use and have another one with all the extra stuff to take along as "needed"?

All I'm saying is why break your back (and bank) if you don't have to?

In my 20 years, "plug in and push play" seems to do the trick. The gear is just there to get the sound out. Everything else comes from the skills and talent of the DJ.

Well Hank,
I will answer that question as it relates to me.
The Sections of my setup is as follows:
SOURCE:Laptop (As a Souce), DJ Console that houses My DJ Mixer and Controller/MP3 Dual Decks (another source)
PROCESS RACK Live Mixer, Furman Conditioner, EQ, Two wireless Mikes, Compressor/Limiter/Gate, Reverb, EQ, Compressor/limiter for Individual Mics, Bose Controller (2 way crossover), Two Amps, Drawer for accessories.
SPEAKERS: Assorted Full Range speakers, tweeters, miranges and Subs/bass cabinets.

I do everything from small to large Gigs, Karaoke, sound Reinforcement and rentals. Instead of having a host of cases and individual racks I have simplified things by common use. the Amp Rack only goes out when I am running the full 3 way live sound system. There are times when using the Process rack, some components may not be used but are already prewired in the Rack. Aside from Speakers, my DJ Booth footprint is always ony 42" wide. Smaller than a 6' table that most DJs use.
By the time I get to the point of using the Large system, it will be either for a club or large venue so by ratio, the size won't matter, just the sound.
My system is always ready to go at a moment's notice, loaded in my van. The Large 3 way system speakers stay at the club.
In reality, I don't have to turn down any size Gigs because I am well equipped to do all. I am not limited by size. The bigger Gigs = bigger $$$$$ for the same amount of time as the small gigs.

Hank/ Scott....

Hank -your laptop fails, what's your back up? If you mixer fails, what's your back up?....If at the event you are approched by the client to plug in a couple of guitars, or extra mics......are you able to?

Let me preface this by saying I have no issue with what you take or what you do...that's yoour business. I like to be prepared.

In the main rack......dmx controller...needed for lighting

Mixer - needed...

Crossover - needed as I runs subs

M Audio Fast Track Pro (sound card)

Wireless mic reciver

Furman Power conditioner

Laptop

2nd rack.....

Elation light controller (needed for lighting)
Laptop (back up)
Maidio Fast trak Pro (for laptop)

Yamaha mixer (back up) and if I need extra inputs for mics, or guitars...whatever.....

2nd wireless receiver........

To each his own....I'm trying to offer more than the regular joe (in my area) out there....

When they see what I bring clienbts likely realize that what we do isn't so easily done.....

My back up gear stays in the truck, but thanks for the explanation.
So basically, it's doubled for back up purposes? I just couldn't understand what it was all for. I do now.

Hank - doubled - by coincidence...I've used the Yamaha mixer many times during gigs... so while its there for back up; it's not just back up. I've had 3, 4 mics going at once as well. I had 2 mc's moving about the room...My set up allows me to do a lot of things...

Steve the tough sell is making the client who usually has minimal knowledge or experience with such things wont ever recognize the added value unless you hold the golden egg secret when selling. More for less it seems or simply offering more when broken down comes out to the same price over all than the guys who charge less and achieve success in your area while bringing much less making more profit margin in the process.

That's a lot of stuff Steve. I'm glad I keep it simple. At least you cover it well.
(also not a fan of the stand drapes)

I still don't undertsand why some of us bring so much gear. I just did a recital at the theater below with four speakers(2 powered, 2 passive), one amp and my custom console. I ran the stuff at 50% and it rocked the house.

lgblueseats.jpg

I'm not a fan of stand drapes either. I usually don't bring a whole lot - but I always have 2 (or 4) speakers with me and some simple lighting.

If you take care of your gear and present it neatly people will actually believe you are a DJ and not this guy

Jon - Agree...the typical client does not see value in what I bring. they only see the value if there is a situation where they can do something (like the 2 roaming mc's) because of what i bring. This is a case where I see the value which is why I take the time to lug this gear in and out.

It's like lighting...to me lighting adds so much to the "dance" portion...although again the client may not see the value; my client Thursday nite did.....It's my decision to lug in and set it up and use it.....and I do......

It's like the racked gear. Do customers get the perception when they see a laptop, small mixer and wireless receiver on a table that anyone can be a DJ? Interesting question......I know when they see mine they won't think that....

and again...I'm not judging anyone....You run your business they way you want to and if it works...great!

I think most of us are guilty of over indulging when it comes to gear, whether it be two racks of various pieces of gear and a bunch of lighting, or whether it be Bose or Dynacord....
