lightening my gear load

I just found out that next week I will be having back surgery. I will be laid up for a few weeks but still need to be careful with lifting. So I figured it is a good time to lighten my gear load.

I only use 2 Eons on sticks and have been doing that for years and I am happy with that.

My question is, will 2 Bose L1 compacts give as much sound as my 2 Eons? They weigh 29lbs vs the 80 lbs or so of the Eons and I won't have to lift these over my head at all.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated also. I really don't want this to turn into a gear bashing thread. My health depends on it and I have the time now to research and tax time to invest in the gear is almost here.

Thanks in advance.

Karl, a cheaper option may be to get those self rising crank style of speaker stands.

I haven't lifted a speaker over my head for years - maybe up to my chest, place it on the stand, lift up the pole and tighten it up.

Or maybe even a roadie to do ALL the hauling you need - raise your price by $75 and give it to that person.

That is an idea but I would still have a lot of lifting to and from the van and from the floor to my chest area. I really think that lighter is the best way to go.

But that is going down on my list of things to remember also. Thanks.

Have a look at these. They will put the Eons to shame and are half the weight. I heard them and all i can say is wow....

With all due respect Karl...

Is it perhaps time to take a sabbatical from mobile DJ'ing, and let your body have some time to get fixed up a bit...?

Perhaps a residency in a bar/club, where the equipment is installed...

In a perfect world that would be the way to go. With hopefully reconfiguring the weight load and proper lifting techniques, will be enough. My son has already said he will be getting more involved in the loading and set up.

In the boondocks they don't have bar/clubs that have that option.

Karl the question is how big are your weddings? I have never heard the Compacts but I have the L1s... I also do not know the Eon's,,,, so if you are doing 200-300 people weddings I would think you would need more than the Compacts.... if you are like me and mostly doing 25-100 people events, they would work..

Nahhhhhhh! The Clubs don't give the DJs Playlists and besides their speakers are spread too far apart. Some DJs are not used to that sort of thing. :triwink:

Maybe the new Line Arrays will work better. such as these: http://hkaudio.com/elements_config.php5?&command=configure&entry=k_dj They would run circles around the Bose L1s.

Or if one can no longer cut the mustard, it is time to quit!

I average 100-150 a reception for the meals. After meals I lose 25% to 50% for the dance.

I talked to Cap and he said that they compare well to the Eons for my events.

Seriously! If the Bose compares "well" to the Eons  I would look elsewhere for sound. Personally I think they are better than the Eons. The Eons are known as the bottom of the Barrel of JBL's Lineup!

Here is the message Cap sent me. Maybe my comment wasn't accurate when I said compared well.

We compared the Compact to the Eon 10 and JBL lived up to it's name J_ust B_asically L_ousy. We also compared it to the Fender Passport, and two others I cannot remember off hand. You WILL be thrilled with the Compact. Not pleased...THRILLED!

So I should have said they are better than what I am using now. And I really like the size.

I would check out the FBT Powered Speaker lineup...They are well known to deliver outstanding bass for a two speakers on sticks setup.

Up until recently the Hi MaxX 40A was the top of the line but recently they introduced a new series called ProMaxx with the top model being the ProMaxx 14A....A few have been sold in the U.S. since late December... I will be eagerly awaiting online reviews on them as the year progresses.

But I think the Bose Compact is a viable option also....I have never been impressed with JBL Eon's

The eons although workhorses is the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard from a top teir pro gear maker. Try the Peavy's your ears and customers will thank you. The top end is like silk.

Well, we don't live in a perfect world -- that I will agree. So, I'll be a bit more blunt...

If I were having back surgery, I would be looking for a new line of work, and not lighter speakers... ;)

Ok things are clearer now. You are referring to the Bose Compact. Again, seriously, if you have to use that for a wedding because you can't lift a speaker as light as the Eon then you are going to short change your clients. The Compact is better suited for a ceremony.
It just might be that you may have to give up the DJ business. I mean lets face it. Its like a Doctor telling a Jackhammer construction worker that he can't do that task anymore and that worker is contemplating buying a cordless drill to do the same task.
Save your money for retirement. Give your system to your son, do the marketing and booking of the gigs and let him run the show. split the money 50/50.

I have heard the compact in a Bose store demoing a variety of music and my opinion is that like many have said they are very adequate for ceremony and cocktail/ Dinner. I wouldnt go out with them for a dancing portion unless I had no other choice. I really didnt like the sound and also have heard the Passport and felt it was much more clear and had a bit of oomph as well. That unit Canute has produces a wider and better balance than the compact having listened to both.

Karl,
I trust Cap. But let me go back to your health. You're a big guy and if you're having enough problems that require surgery I think you need to slow down a lot and let your back heal and don't expose your self to more complications. If your weddings have been handled properly by your JBL's and Cap says that the compacts will run all over the JBL's I would say go for it your back will thank you for that as well as your family. Ask to see if you are able to return them if they don't satisfy your needs as some Bose products state.

...
the 80 lbs or so of the Eons

Check out the QSC K series. The K8 is 27 lb, K10 is 32lb. The K8 would probably need a K-Sub...but that can be on wheels and requires minimal lifting. The K10 would cover most of your events without a sub. It would be a little less output than the eons...but not enough to matter....especially with the weight savings.

If you think it will be a big issue, get four tops and run a distributed sound system.

Well I guess I'll forget the Bose Compacts...I have been successfully using Fender Passports since 1997...I have also been a happy FBT user since 2004. I see no reasons to change at this point. Those new Peavey 12D's do sound interesting though..I will have to check them out.

I do not feel anyone should give up DJ'ing due to physical limitations....But maybe could consider moving in a more "retro" direction...I play all types of music but the 60's-90's would certainly be my greatest strengths.
