Weddings Anybody else noticinng this... garter related.

The brides are throwing the bouquet, and the grooms are throwing the garter, but I am seeing a large percentage of weddings NOT having the guy who caught the gater put it on the woman who caught the bouquet.

Personally I think it is great. I find it kind of creepy / pervy for a guy to be reaching up the skirt of a woman he's never met before. And some of the guys just go WAY TOO FAR.
 
In 23 years I have never done that. I get them together for a picture, but the whole put it on her leg thing is too staged and awkward. Why would anyone ever want to put a wedding guest on the spot? There is one sure way to get a lot of others to NOT participate in anything else!
 
Around here, say 10 years ago, until just a few years ago, it was pretty standard for the guy who caught the garter to do this. In fact, at my own wedding, my nephew on my wife's side, ended up putting it on my cousin.

She used to be really good looking, and she was a stripper... He tried to be overly "cool", and she ended up making him blush for a week I think.

I thought it was out of bounds, but I didn't want to make an issue of it.
 
never seen it done, never promoted it.....

kinda weird, awkward, and not appropriate, I think.....

I am all for bridesmaids getting their legs in the air......on the dancefloor and such though.

Well, I guess I am in the minority here, because we have done it before.

How we handle it is we let the bride decide. We tell the bride to just nod yes or no once the two things have been caught. Since she will know the people. she will be able to decide if it is appropriate or not.

It can work well if done right. We have had couples actually be the ones who catch it, and really turns fun when that happens.
 
We've never had anyone want to do this and even if we did it would be strongly encouraged to not have this happen. Now the picture of the B&G and the ones who caught the garter and bouquet, that's fine.
 
Maybe it's a regional thing, but around here, it's expected and has been since my parents got married - I've seen the photo.

Of course, it has it's down side.

Some of the single ladies will NOT want some random guy feeling up thier leg, so they don't even go for the bouquet.

On the flip side, some single men will only go for the garter, based on who caught the bouquet. For that reason, I often do the garter first.

Of course, some brides will do the tosses but don't want to to the garter placement thing at all.
 
I've heard about it being done in history books. I've never seen it done, never done it, and have never been asked about doing it.

Yep its very regional, here is Cali if I even suggested it people would look at me like "you wanna do what". It's not even something that is brought up so yes its very regional.
 
I don't suggest it. It's not in my wedding planner.
However, I have been party to this "custom."
If the B&G choose to have it, then I always tell them that should a child be involved, the "garter" will be placed on the arm of the female...not leg replacement.

There are a couple of ways to do the Garter/Bouquet toss. I remember doing the "circle pass" of the Garter/Bouquet as another way to avoid the "leg placement."

Two circles. Inner circle are single females looking at B&G who are in the center. Outer circle are males with backs to the inner circle.
Garter is given to the "outer circle" and asked to begin handing it off in one direction. Bouquet is given to the "inner circle" and asked to hand off in the opposite direction of the male circle.

When music is stopped whomever has the Garter and Bouquet are the recepients. This method does allow for a specific person to be chosen in advance to receive the Garter or Bouquet. The DJ must really keep eyes on where the Garter or Bouquet is at all times so that when the music is stopped the "chosen" person is in fact receiving the Garter or Bouquet.

It can be hiliarious and surprising. I remember one wedding where there was no specific person selected to receive the garter or bouquet. As it turned out the male and female who ended up with the the Garter and Bouquet were an item and had been dating for several years. The were married a year later. :)

So, for those seeking another way around the "replacement" issue, there you go.
 
Yes, this is typically done in the NY/NJ area, I probably do it at about 75% of weddings... sometimes if I can tell the guy is feeling akward doing it, or if he stops at her knee, I stop it, say I bet you anything that she will put this up your leg further than you just did, all the ladies watching laugh... then I throw on Dude Looks Like a Lady, and everytime, she'll put it up his leg further, over his pants of course.

Around here, children usually do not get involved in any of this.
 
I think we had it happen once, but we didn't encourage it. It was thrown in at the last minute. That was the only time, though. My mom wanted me to have that at our wedding, but we weren't doing the bouquet and garter tosses; it wasn't an issue. Overall, I think it's a tacky addition.

Steve, I agree, but I do find this tacky, so I do have a very tactful way to mention it, and when I do, many agree. But I do not force them...
