Well...today was stressful to say the least. I never thought this was possible, but it turns out that I did find the exception to the rule. I loaded up the new rig to head out to a small academic rally show this afternoon. Load in was a breeze and I got sound up and running pretty quickly. I noticed, however that my left QSC HPR122i wasn't producing any sound. So I walked over and saw the LAST thing I needed to see- the peak light was lit solid, the power was on and signal was flickering; which means the amp is shot.

Luckily for me, I loaded my old faithful JBL EON15 G2's into the trailer this afternoon as well. So I thought, no problem I'll go out and get them. Well I brought them in, switched them out, and loaded them up. All sounded well, until I heard the right JBL crackling a bit then the more sound I added, the more it crackled and came in and out. I checked the connections, power and cables. All seemed to be in order. I noticed when I turned the gain up or down on the eon, it cuts out and then crackles back in.

At this point i'm panicking. I had to go to my last resort- I went out to the trailer and got my JBL EON10 G2's which are tiny little monitors. I switched the crossover for them and sent them only mids and highs and juiced up the SWA1501s.....and they worked. And thank GOD this was a middle school academic rally for 150 kids. It worked out fine in the end, and I couldn't believe I did a show with a pair of 10" eons and Mackie 15" subs.

Needless to say I'm taking them all to the shop monday, 2 hours away in myrtle beach. QSCs are still under warranty so they should be ok. The EON might get fixed or i might just buy another one. I'm currently shopping for a pair of HPR153i's but I might go ahead and buy myself a pair of mackie srm450s to just keep in the trailer for an emergency like this.

Damn....and I got a gig sunday too. Luckily, it's a small wedding and they won't know the difference.

The old Adage when you think all has gone wrong another monkey wrench in the fire. I learned it well with the Dynas fortunately I have my EV SXA 100's for backup. How many gigs did you get out of the QSC? Are you saying both tops died? Then Both Eons? I remember when my Mackie SRM 450 died and I hid my SXAs under the table and played the night like that.

No, one of each died. I've gotten 3 solid years out of the HPRs and 6 years out of the JBLs. I expected this eventually on the EONs. They've been kept in pristine condition though. And i've never pushed either of them beyond their capabilities.

I'm going to see about getting the EON fixed. Then I'll sell them for $4-500 bucks. I'm currently looking into getting a pair of SRM450V2s this week to get me through the next month and to have as my backups. The QSCs are great but I'm working towards 3 way QSCs, and the SRM450 will match nicely with my mackie subs.

Okay Ryan tell me about the V2's any good press on them? The Chinese versions after they went overseas were extremely harsh compared to the Italian version. This due to as I called them Mystery Meat Drivers. Why not pick up a pair of the new RCFs which are much more powerful. Maestro and I both heard them in Burnaby at a show a friend of mine put on.

I've seen a lot of the Mackies around town here. They're working well for others and they sound on par with the EONs. I'm not saying the mackies are a better speaker than the RCF's, but I don't want to put too much money into them. I really love the QSCs, but presently I'm not prepared to drop $1800 for 2 new tops (I just spent several thousand on the trailer....this week). I can get a good deal on the mackies and they'll work fine until I get my 122i's back in service and if all goes to plan, we'll have new 153i's for prom season.

Damn, Ryan... I'm sorry to hear. Seems like Old Man Murphy had your name on his infamous list last night. :(

A situation such as this one is rare indeed. It causes me to wonder if there were some baddies in the AC power supply at that venue. :dontknow:

At any rate, I wish you the best with the repairs and the forthcoming wedding engagement. :)

They are 200 watts...

Well don't let all the secrets out of the bag... They do need to release some RMS numbers for those speakers. But I was going by the EV marketing guru's numbers. And 800 is a lot more then 200. Its like 600 more.... There is a lot you can do with that extra 600.

It's just like the K Series. 1000 watts in a 8" speaker.

This is one of the reasons I hate powered speakers. When they fail its like having two components go out on you, amp and speaker. Then you have to take out the other side since you now have a mismatch.

Here is a novel idea!

Get away from all the problems, get speakers that are reliable and will last for your lifetime and probably the lifetime of your kids!

1. Stay away from "Actice" speakers!

2. Stay away from the latest and greatest!

3. Use passive speakers that are time tested tried and true!

4. Use reliable amps!

To get a handle on what is reliable go to E-Bay and see what the oldest speakers and amps there are for sale, that claim to still be in working order! And then get that Brand of speaker and amp! (oh yeah and that particular series in that brand)

And your problems are solved!

It is not a novel idea at all. It is just back to basics. That is the price one pays when they try and take shortcuts with gear. Lessen the load and increase the errors!

That's strange. I have used powered speakers for 10 years & never had a problem.
Is anyone else using your speakers? It sounds like someone is pushing them too much.

Now if you want to talk about problems?....With Passive, it was always something going wrong. Either Amp problems or speaker problems. Never again!

I have used powered Mackies, JBL, EVs..never a problem.
I too, suggest the new EV ZXA1 speakers. These sound like winners.

Further:

- Don't use that new fangled cd ...stick with vinyl or the tried and true cassette

- Don;t drive any of them new cars that use unleaded fuel or shifts automatically

- Don't trust those new fangled ball point pens. Stick with the tried and true quail and bottle of ink....

QSC is one of the most reliable brands available. We're not talking about crappy brands here. JBL has been around much longer than I've been alive. True, the EONs are an entry level speaker, but they weren't the speaker that disappointed me. The HPR series aren't the latest or the greatest, they're one of the best in their product line though and combine the positive benefits of passive cabs with a reliable QSC amp. Active can work to your advantage too. I could have done my show with the one QSC HPR122i and been fine. Had I been using passive speakers and had this same double failure issue with racked amps, i would have REALLY been screwed.

I appreciate the suggestions on speakers guys, but I'm not going to be switching brands. As far as "investment" speakers I'll be sticking with QSC as I've already built myself an inventory of their products and want to keep going in that direction.

But your most reliable "FAIRLY NEW" speakers failed on you!

Had I been using passive speakers and had this same double failure issue with racked amps, I would have REALLY been screwed.

Had you been using a passive system the chance you would have had a double failure are next to none!

I have seen many Active speaker systems with issues (and yes I have some active systems, and I am constantly working on them) I have passive systems that are older than you that have never had any issues and they are still in use today!:sqwink:

OSC speakers have not been on the market long enough to have gained any reputation as being reliable!

No offense thunder, but if I recall correctly, the last time we interacted in a thread together, it was a similar disagreement to this one, only about my business management and surveys.

I'm not going to argue with someone about whether or not QSC is a reliable product, their brand speaks for itsself. You, however, are entitled to your own oppinion, and I respect that and thank you for your contribution to my thread.

Damn and I was right then too! :sqlaugh:
