That once in a million chance- happened to me: both pairs of powered speakers died

Steve,

I am sure they do and I have had amp failures before myself (oddly enough it was a QSC PLX 3602 amp and an EV amp that failed on me) But as with most stereo amp failures you don't lose the entire amp generally it is one side or the other, when this happens it is just a matter of moving the speaker wire from the failed side of the amp to the working side and continuing as if nothing had happened!

As for passive speaker failures, if they are ran as they are supposed to be and not over/under driven then it is not likely that you will see a failure. And even when a failure occurs it is a degradation in performance or quality that the operator should notice fairly quickly and compensate for long before most of the guest at an event would even begin to notice.

The majority of failures in reliable equipment is from operator error or abuse, if they know what they are doing to begin with the vast majority of "Pro" quality gear should out last the business!

Edit: I believe that the failure rates for "active" speakers are increased because of heat and vibration issues within the unit itself!

Not in our experience. And we've pushed 'em pretty hard on occasion. That's what a compressor/limiter is for. Equipment that's made for live sound use doesn't hurt one's chances for survival either. ;)

Just a reminder... this thread isn't really an active/passive debate. Rather, it's a report of a very unusual circumstance where two units failed at the same show. :)
 
I had a QSC PLX-2402 go on me, bad ribbon cable. They were great with the warranty repair though, I have to admit.

My FBT active speakers and RCF active subs have performed flawlessly for quite a few years now.

In 2009, I finally unloaded an old 59 pound Peavey CS800 amp for free on Craigslist; still worked great! I put an ad in that said, "Free, come and get it!" and left it on the porch. It was gone right away. I sold the boat and no longer had a use for the anchor. Lol

While I have never used FTB's I can honestly say that so far the RCFs have been pretty decent, the only issues with those to date have been the pots (a pretty easy repair)

In one Corner we have the Guy from Carolina..... Middleweight, Self Powered. In the other corner we have Sir Peavey.......Heavyweight External Powered.

I will back up here a bit on my own words to clarify. I could see myself buying a pair of powered speakers but it will be used as stage monitors for primarily Karaoke. That way, if one blows, it won't be part of my main sound system. Like everything else, I guess to each his own.
I personally have more trust in the control of an independent amp to speaker setup. I can use the same amp for different speakers. However, in the case of a powered speaker, you cannot separate those two, amp and speaker.

I have a pair of EON15G2's that I use at my low-end price point. I advise prospective clients that for small additional charge ($25) I will bring a pair of Passive MPro MP415's and a pair of amps as backup, and the sound will be oh so much better. Most clients opt to go for the upcharge and the MP415's.

I have yet to have a problem with the EON15G2's, however the sound difference stepping up to the MP415's is obvious, and dramatic.

At the low-end price point I offer, it's music backup only. Honesty pays though. I'm still not keen on the use of powered speakers, and the QSC RMX 2450's I bring for the MPro's have NEVER been a problem.

I'm still using the same JBL's I bought when I started (TR-125's)
and still using the same QSC amp I got about 7 years ago
(and it was used when I got it)

I solved all of the above problems....

I use passive gear all the time
and bought a pair of powered JBL's for backup!

so there!

Well, it appears that the QSC is acting fine now....idk what was up. Could have been a power issue, yet the EON played on the same power cord and everything as the QSC just fine. The QSC in question does have the limit light up for 3-4 seconds when you cut it on before going off (the other one doesn't do that) but it doesn't seem to be affecting the unit's performance. I don't know what went wrong friday, could have been the drastic temp. change. 40 degrees outside to a steaming hot humid 80 inside.

Either way, theyre all 4 going to the shop friday for a full evaluation. I'm still planning on getting an extra pair of tops though, just for backup purposes. I have several proms coming up this spring so I need to be sure that I will have the gear I need to do those shows.
