So If I want to hook up my back-up laptop right into my L1 Power stand, coming out of the headphone jack, can I just go 2 1/4 L&R into channels 1 and 2? and then use the remote for adjustments?

You won't get stereo out of it, I'd use a mono 1/8" to single XLR. Finding cables like this is a PITA (probabaly even more so on a beautiful rock in the middle of the ocean), but doable.

Funny, I was just thinking about this myself. I don't see why not, except I would just run it in mono. I've seen Cap plug a netbook directly into an L1 compact.

I've seen Cap do a lot of things but that's a different thread.

Why not just get a single external USB sound card. Then you can come out R&L RCA?

I don't book ceremony systems often, and I was just going to pull out my back up gear, but I thought, why not just use lappy into one, it's for like 4 songs...

Ben has them.

need it for Saturday, and unless Kat jumps on a plane tonight, not gonna help...:)

Chuck you do not want to connect the L into CH1 and the R into CH2....

This would do the trick... takes two 1/4" in to one XLR out.... takes care of the whole stereo to mono question too as it combines the L and R into one. Then use the other xlr input on the L1 for microphone and control it from the remote like you would a mixer.

Chuck,
I know this doesn't help for right now but the little boys of those speakers you speak of do take a 1/8 in from any devise. Just some food for thought.

Rob, why would Chuck need a DI box for this?

If I understand correctly he is wanting to take the output directly from his laptop into a single power stand. Each powerstand has two XLR / 1/4 TRS inputs that utilize the L1's processing. These were not designed with the intention of inserting a stereo input and using them in this fashion can, as I understand, produce undesired effects.

By using a Y-cable with a 1/8" trs to a L and R 1/4" into the DI box you come out with a balanced single XLR output suitable for the L1 powerstand.

Also, you only need to utilize one channel on the L1 powerstand leaving the other XLR input for say something like a Mic.

Trust me this is the best method and is in fact how I ran things for an entire year before I got the second L1 system.

I just looked up the connections to check the inputs and there is a 1/4". Why not use that?

You could certainly do that but you loose the +3db gain by using the XLR insert. Yes, both channels have a combination XLR and 1/4" input... plus there are two additional channels not controlable by the remote nor utilizing the processing....

As I say using the method as I describe will give the best results possible for the given situation.

1/8 to 1/4 unbalanced

I carry a 1/8 to 1/4 unbalanced cord to use w/ a ipod sometimes. This would also work from laptop. I only use input 1 and 2 w/ 1/4 inch plug unless its a mike then i would use xlr. The remote will control eq and trim/gain on chan 1 and 2 and vol for all 4 channels.

I also have used rca to 1/4 right from the hercules mk2 and even from that lil bherrnger sound card(the 29$ usb to rca one)

The L1 remote will control master vol for all channels 1,2,3,4.

Input channels 1 and 2 should use 1/4 unless its a mic then u use xlr. The reslut will be the best quality sound if u do it this way.

however if u want to fool around and do it other ways it will produce audio just not the best. Just my opinion

The remote only has trim controls for channels 1 & 2 plus a master.... is that what you mean by controlling all 4?

Another thing to note is you don't get the most optimal signal by using the 1/4 inputs... the only way you could is if you were using an instrument such as a guitar or bass that has a hi-z or line level output. Most mixers are not outputing a hi-z signal.

For longer runs of cable using a hi-z unbalanced cable is not desirable as there is a higher potential for interference and noise to be injected into the signal. Hence the use of XLR or a Balanced TRS type of connection.

Certainly in a pinch what you describe is workable but, not desired.

YMMV
