So, I was trying to transfer my business domain to GoDaddy so I could have everything all under one bill (my personal site and blog/podcast site all under GoDaddy). Plus, I like the design service much better than with who I am using now (VistaPrint).

I call GoDaddy, and they said they have sent an email to the administrative email attached to the domain account. So, I call VistaPrint and tell them I am transferring the domain out from them, and need the administrative email address on the domain account changed so I can have access to it for the transfer.

"We can't do that" I am told.

"Why not?" I ask.

"Because you don't own the domain, we do"

"Umm, what? I am paying you guys $15 a month".

"That is just to host the domain, you do not own it. If you want to buy it from us, we will sell it to you......for $100."

I am so mad, I just hang up on the guy and call GoDaddy back. The guy checks and tells me yes, when I signed up and purchased the package with VistaPrint, they did not put the domain in my name, but in their, so they own it.

"Is this a common practice?" I ask.

"First time I have ever heard of it" The GoDaddy guy replies.

He says my only option is to buy the domain from VistaPrint, because even is I cancel the service, they have the right to hold onto the domain name. And even if they release it, I would have to wait about 60 days to get it!!!!

So I either plop down $100 for the domain, keep throwing $15 a month away on a service I am not real happy with, or be without a website for 2 months while it clears everything from canceling!!

Man, do I hate the internet!!!!

Do not take the "wait 2 months" option. Vista print could decide to hold on to the domain and offer (or auction) it at a higher price, OR somebody else could have already put themselves on a waitlist for the name.

How do you find out if you own your domain or the host company does?

Back in the day, this is how a lot of the domain registrars operated. They would buy the name and rent it to you.

Thanks... found this http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

Strange I searched mine and while it has my name on it as the registrar the address associated with it must be that of Yahoo.... because it certainly ain't mine....

If it's your name as the registrar, you are fine. You may have your registration set to private. The host will then list their contact information to prevent you from getting spam, but forward important stuff to you.

There is another option - if VistaPrint allows this.

You could continue to pay them a fee for the name. A legitimate domain registrar charges less than $20 per year for this.

You then can have the domain 'point' to any web host. ALL web hosting and design would be done by the new host. Vista print merely maintains the regiatration.

Here's your "whois". They've got you I'm afraid.

Most places do not offer FREE web forwarding. He may have to pay as much as $12 more a month to point it somewhere.

I had to this about 2 years ago I own about 5 domain names and I had them all transferred to godaddy from Network Soutions and Mydomain it was a little bit of a headache but they are all under godaddy now and I host my websites on powweb.

It sounds like Vista whatever it's called owns the domain name if you really want to keep that name your best best is to just buy it asap. If there is an option for you to use another domain name I would opt for that instead and just get it from godaddy directly of course then you will have to change your business cards, etc.

$15 a month is actually quite expensive to just 'rent' the name to you. Did they also host and create your website? I pay $7 a month for hosting and renew my domain names every 2-3 years.

And if they do release it it can be picked up by someone else possibly before you get to it

Yes, it is one of those have to check every do for it to become available and then snatch it up things.

I guess I am just kind of stuck with them and their crappy design templates.

Perfect time to learn how to write websites Patrick :)

It's not like you were doing anything important anyway... :sqlaugh: :sqwink:

Now you are just speaking a foreign language :sqlaugh:

???, ??? ??????????? ???? :D

It's actually pretty simple stuff Patrick -- you write the HTML code, and use an FTP program to upload to your site.

There are tons of sites out there, to get you started, and many even have their own template setups. Besides, if you ever need a job, you will have a new found skill :)
