Limewire vs. Legit

I've always stayed away from Limewire, about 10% of the moral issue behind it and 90% because of the quality of the downloads you get.

Friday my sweet 16 birthday girl gave me a couple CD's she burned (from Limewire she tells me) so just for giggles I sound check with her version of "Forever"....it literally hurt my ears. The highs were so harsh I wondered if my sub's were even plugged in. I broght up my version of "Forever" (320 bit rate) and faded it in.....unbeleivable the quality difference. The same was true for a number of other tracks I compared from her burned CD to my library.


Moral of the story....if for nothing other than quality of the product you are selling to your clients - stay away from limewire!!!

If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything.
 
The sound quality does suck.... But on the morality issue of the whole thing, is anyone out there besides me willing to admit they sometimes use a crooklyn clan yourremix or hype machine remix...Adds flavor
 
I look through the crooklyn clan vault all the time!!!

Haven't bought anything, But get some great ideas from there.

And i'm also well aware of the quality difference from my files to Limewire crap.
Dan uses them almost exclusively, and they sound like azz.

I stand for plenty, worrying about seeing the rich get richer in a totally flawed music industry isn't something I worry much about. I do worry about the quality of the tracks I purchase however...which was the point of the post.

You are correct, some of the tracks are really bad, so I will agree with you on that point.

But I would like to address the "rich getting richer" part.

Limewire (and other services like it) do not hurt already established acts who are on major labels. That is the big misconception. Like I have said before when Limewire is brought up, I have witnessed in studio producers take a track just recorded and upload it right to Limewire from the studio with the artist standing right beside him watching him do it. 99% of the established artists want the Limewires around.

What P2P services hurt are the indie/unsigned artists, because part of the money that used to come in to the labels from CD sales went to A&R. With that money no longer there, labels are no longer out scouting for new talent, which means instead of labels finding and breaking bands into the mainstream, we are stuck with the same few bands over and over again.

Patrick at the same time you have to consider how the "unmusic business" and the "social business" have really changed. A&R is not as hard is it used to be so many bands

were discovered by A&R vice presidents or in Souljas case Jimmy Iovine from their desks on myspace.com

Im working on a side project for which a good friend Kim Stephens told me he cant talk to us unless the guys have 100,000 myspace friends, forget selling out a venue like ZIgggys (before it closed down) or bringing 10,000 people to a street festival, you have to have a minimum of 100,000 friends.

anyway.. sorry to go off topic but while i agree in haste about the A&R deal and limewire, the A&R budget is less because of the way they do things now.
 
Moral issue aside (we all know the law), if you're going to try to deter someone from using Limewire based on the "poor quality" argument, it won't work. Only ignorant users up/download poor source files. That's not to say they don't exist. Most "kids" don't understand what a bitrate is. They go for the smallest file for the quickest download.

You could have just as easily received an undisclosed Limewire disc to which you wouldn't have been the wiser.
 
I'm not trying to deter teenagers from using limewire, or really anyone for that matter, just making an observation to a bunch of pro DJ's that DO care about the bitrate of thier tracks.

Kris- your argument is very valid. Thanks for bringing it up in the first place. You do get those CDs the kiddies give you for their parties or they want to plug in their ipod again laden with crap tracks.

We send out an email with instructions on how to export playlists as text files for those that dont feel like taking the 10 minutes to use our DJI playlist

Thanks man, but I wasn't in this for an argument...just making an observation.
 
As soon as I get given a copied CD I ask them have they got a licence that allows me to play said CD

if they give me a legal one (Store bought) then I have no problems

as where we are in Australia we can get done for copyright so easy that If they give me to play a Store bought one I refuse to play a Copied version (unless its played at a NON-Commercial location like a home)

Dont worry now that we have a newly elected official likely you will see underpriviledged DJ's given a free pass to the government run Limewire of course those not falling within that group will subsidize it by having to pay a surcharge on each CD bought so the 20,000 new jobs being created to police and operate within the Limewire Corp Building.

you guys dont know me by now? I was laughing too hard to use a lol or icon. It was funny come on you know ya wanna laugh.
 
it seems as if EVERY new band or artist
knows their time is short
there are no more classic bands, classic songs, or classic albums.
you get into the public's eye (or ears)
any way you can
spew out as many hits as you can
and pray there will be a follow up album.
saying that the Limewire's of the world are cutting in on their money
is like saying that RADIO or MTV cut into their money.
it PROMOTES their name
and allows them to make money in a host of other ways
(concerts, movie deals, t-shirts, lunch boxes, whatever)
 
Ok so im gonna break out and admit the truth...

Since im in Canada and PEI so even if its no legal no one checks ;)

I have this wirless internet modem that i can take anywere i want and get a signal

I use an external hard drive for my music...buy/rip it at home on the desktop and plug it into the laptop..

When im doing a gig and someone asks me for a song that I dont have, instead of lying or telling them i dont have it I open up limewire and download it at the best quality I can
...no moral issues here I just want to make my customers happy

And if it counts for brownie points I buy the song when I get home if I like it enough
 
oh just another insight about limewire...

how many have used it and found viruses that suddenly are installed...
how many installed it and found a virus (as what the antivirus software has told you)

I say you get what you download
